Spearfishing the SA Limestone Coast

Robe and Beachport are the clear-water end of South Australia. Limestone reef, crayfish ledges and long jetties - and the one SA zone where snapper is still open.

This is a small region with one town card and a long coast behind it. Cape Dombey around the obelisk, Long Beach reef and Doorway Rock, Nora Creina south of Robe, plus the Beachport, Cape Jaffa and Kingston SE jetties - limestone reef and ledge in 2-18 m, crayfish, snapper and sea sweep, with clear water when the swell lies down. The coast faces around 250 degrees with a bad sector of roughly 190-310, and nothing shelters it from the south, so a flat spell is what makes the trip.

Summer and early autumn are the window; the Upper South East Marine Park boundary starts about 67 m from the Boatswains Point mark, so this is a coast where checking the line matters more than the calendar. Rock lobster is the local prize and the fishery has its own seasons and rules - read the current PIRSA page before you plan around it.

Rules: PIRSA Fisheries. No recreational licence in SA, but no spear may be carried or used on SCUBA or hookah, rock lobster may not be taken with a speargun or any pointed instrument, powerheads are protection-only, spears are banned in all aquatic reserves and in fresh water, and there is no spearfishing within 100 m of jetties, landings and wharves - which rules out the jetty structures themselves. Snapper is closed across most of SA until 30 June 2027 but remains open in the South East Fishing Zone, which is this coast. See https://pir.sa.gov.au/fishing-and-aquaculture/recreational-fishing/rules. Safety, conditionally: Robe carries a moderate white-shark rating in our data, the ledges wash on swell, and there is very little shelter along this shore.

FAQ

Is snapper open at Robe?

Yes. The SA snapper closure to 30 June 2027 covers the West Coast, Spencer Gulf and Gulf St Vincent/Kangaroo Island zones; the South East Fishing Zone, which includes Robe and Beachport, stays open. Confirm the current rule with PIRSA before you go.

Can you spear off the Beachport or Cape Jaffa jetties?

No. South Australia bans spearfishing within 100 m of jetties, landings and wharves, including the adjacent foreshore. The jetties are on our maps as structure and bathymetry, not as huntable ground.

When does the Limestone Coast dive best?

Summer and early autumn. The coast faces about 250 degrees with a bad sector of roughly 190-310 and no shelter from the south, so the trip is planned around a flat spell rather than a month.

What can you spear here?

Snapper (open in this zone), sea sweep and the temperate reef species; southern rock lobster is present but may not be taken with a spear or any pointed instrument in South Australia.
