Spearfishing in Central Portugal
Central Portugal is built around choices of exposure. The Centre has more tactical shoreline than the North because Peniche and Baleal face several directions. That shape lets divers choose the lee side for the wind or swell, and it is the main reason this region can stay usable across more conditions. Papôa is the reference Peniche headland: an exposed boulder reef with bream, bass and conger, best after a long calm spell and worth scouting from land. Prainha de São Pedro / Furninha is almost the opposite, a sheltered fort cove and the rare green entry in the region, with bream and octopus in the cracks. Farther north, Praia do Cabo Mondego (Serradinho) is the best-documented reef around Figueira da Foz, with broad rocky ground and nearby marks known for big bass. Nazaré is in the list but the canyon changes the calculation, focusing and amplifying west swell right at the beach. Berlengas has the clearest water in mainland Portugal and an oceanic massif with wrasse, moray and sea bass, but it is for snorkel or discovery freedive only because spearfishing is banned throughout the reserve.

Reserves & no-take zones
- Reserva Natural das Berlengas (UNESCO Biosphere Reserve) — Spearfishing BANNED across the whole archipelago (formerly a robalo/cação ground, now interdicted). Endangered dusky grouper (mero) at Ilhéu dos Farilhões. Snorkel/discovery-freedive only; boat access from Peniche on calm days.
