Google MapsSOLO is the biggest risk: underwater you can black out from lack of oxygen silently and fatally, with no one around. Solo is never truly «safe». Below are the best weather windows; carry a buoy, tell someone your plan and exit time, and any doubt — don't go.

Rules change. Before heading out, get the AUNAP sport-fishing permit; with a speargun the lionfish is the only clearly legal target — for natives consult AUNAP. PNN Tayrona is no-take.
Providencia has rock entry points such as Cara oeste (fuera de McBean). Providencia and Santa Catalina is a volcanic island with the world's third-largest barrier reef and very high transparency, but much of it falls in PNN Old Providence McBean Lagoon, managed by the Raizal community against overfishing. Below you'll find each spot (access, shelter and hazards) and today's forecast.
Fishable year-round; the dry season (Dec–Apr) and the windless mid-year bring the clearest water to the islands.
Warm, ~27–29 °C — rashguard. Very clear coral water around San Andrés, Providencia and the Rosario islands.
Beginner-friendly clear reef, but strongly protected — Seaflower and the Rosario/San Bernardo parks set strict no-take zones.
In Providencia, sport spearfishing is a grey zone: Res AUNAP 0549/2022 authorises the speargun mainly against lionfish (invasive) — spearing native species is not confirmed in the text. You need a pesca deportiva permit (AUNAP); breath-hold only (one speargun, no scuba), no night. In the parks (Tayrona, Rosario, Malpelo, Gorgona) and across Seaflower (San Andrés) spearguns are banned for tourists. Check AUNAP rules and see the guide.
