Pesca submarina na África do Sul
A África do Sul são dois oceanos num só país e uma enorme cultura de caça, mas primeiro há um documento e dois proibições duras a acertar. Precisas de um permit recreativo com o endosso de pesca sub (MLRA 18/1998): taxa ~R7 mais o endosso anual Spearfishing R87 (ou 4 semanas R50), comprado online em fishing.dffe.gov.za ou num balcão dos correios. Captura só para uso próprio — venda proibida. Depois, os dois proibições que ninguém deve falhar: escafandro/narguilé proibidos (só apneia), e a PS em qualquer estuário totalmente proibida (reg 16).
O comum é ler as duas correntes: o upwelling frio de Benguela no oeste atlântico (Cidade do Cabo; yellowtail, hottentot, kelp; limpa com vento SE, época verão) contra o Agulhas quente no leste do Índico (Cabo Oriental → KwaZulu-Natal; couta, gamefish, recife; a clareza é ditada pela ondulação e panaches, época inverno + Sardine Run). Este guia dá a lei, percorre a costa do Cabo para leste e liga-se à previsão diária de cada cidade.
Abrir o destaque — Cape Town →Permit e os dois proibições que apanham todos
Precisas de um permit recreativo com o endosso Spearfishing (MLRA 18/1998): taxa ~R7 mais o endosso anual R87 (ou 4 semanas R50), online em fishing.dffe.gov.za ou num balcão dos correios. Captura só para uso próprio — venda proibida. A seguir, o que não se pode falhar:
- Só em apneia. Escafandro e narguilé para PS são proibidos (reg 8) — só snorkel e um fôlego.
- Nunca em estuários. A PS em qualquer estuário ou rio de maré é totalmente proibida (reg 16), sem exceções de espécie ou tamanho. Caça só ao largo da foz.
- Limite diário de 10 peixes no total, mais tamanhos e limites por espécie (Table 4) e fechos sazonais (galjoen 15 out–fim fev; elf/shad 1 set–30 nov).
- Dentro de uma MPA cumpre as condições do órgão gestor; em várias MPA nem podes transportar a espingarda (Sardinia Bay, Bird Island, Robben Island etc.).
Dois oceanos: Benguela vs Agulhas
Todo o país se lê como um gradiente entre duas correntes. O upwelling frio de Benguela no oeste atlântico (Cidade do Cabo, Costa Ocidental) — 8–14 °C: yellowtail, hottentot e kelp; limpa com o vento SE («south-easter»), época verão. O Agulhas quente no leste do Índico (Cabo Oriental → KwaZulu-Natal) — 21–27 °C: couta, gamefish e recife; aqui a clareza é ditada pela ondulação e panaches, e o inverno seco é a época limpa. A Garden Route entre eles é a mistura de transição dos dois oceanos. A mais a norte, Sodwana, é tropical (visibilidade 20–30 m). No leste (KZN/Wild Coast) um «SW buster» — uma mudança forte de sudoeste — corta a água; apanha a janela antes dele.
No-take: MPA e a proibição de estuários
A proteção soma-se de duas formas. A África do Sul tem ~41 MPA (após a expansão de 2019), com zonas no-take (Restricted/Sanctuary/Wilderness), Controlled e Controlled-Pelagic — entre elas Tsitsikamma, De Hoop, iSimangaliso/Sodwana, Aliwal Shoal e Protea Banks; dentro de uma zona no-take (e nas MPA com proibição total de espingarda) a ficha não fica verde. À parte e por toda a costa, a proibição de estuários (reg 16) fecha à PS cada estuário e rio de maré — é uma regra geral, não um conjunto de fozes mapeadas. O abalone (perlemoen) está recreativamente fechado até nova ordem.
Espécies e troféus
No oeste os alvos são yellowtail, hottentot e roman-vermelho; no leste couta (cavala-rei), garrick (leervis), geelbek e musselcracker; o kob está em ambas as costas. O peixe nacional galjoen é legal ao arpão (35 cm, limite 2), mas fechado 15 out–fim fev. Os grandes no-take são as garoupas brindle bass e potato bass, o seventy-four (moratória desde 1998), tubarões branco/baleia/frade e todos os corais duros. Calendário sazonal
As duas costas correm em épocas opostas, por isso há quase sempre algo a pescar. O oeste frio é uma pescaria de verão (limpa com o vento SE); o leste quente é de inverno/seco, coroado pelo Sardine Run. Mês a mês (hemisfério sul):

Segurança
Nunca mergulhes sozinho. Tubarões — o título honesto. No leste (KZN) o risco principal é o tubarão-touro (Zambezi) e os tigres, concentrados junto às fozes e na água turva e muito atraídos pelo peixe abatido — evita as fozes, a turvação e o amanhecer/anoitecer e não arrastes peixe a sangrar em ti. Os brancos no Cabo ficaram raros (ainda raros, não voltaram), mas há em Mossel Bay/Plett/Algoa; nas praias da Cidade do Cabo funcionam as bandeiras dos Shark Spotters. No KZN, junto à costa, há redes e drumlines, e durante o Sardine Run (mai–jul) as redes são retiradas e os predadores enchem o raso. Um «SW buster» corta a água no leste — sai antes dele. E lembra: nada de estuários (reg 16), só apneia. A previsão por cidade marca a janela de perigo.
Onde mergulhar, por região
Western Cape
Cabo Ocidental (Cidade do Cabo, False Bay, Hermanus) — o upwelling frio de Benguela; o vento SE limpa a água, mas há tubarões.
- Cape Town — Cape Town's Atlantic seaboard — cold Benguela water off Sea Point, Clifton and Camps Bay: kelp forest, hottentot, red roman, black musselcracker and summer yellowtail.
- Hout Bay — Hout Bay on the Atlantic side of the Peninsula — hottentot, snoek, red roman and yellowtail over kelp and reef; the BOS 400 crane-barge wreck and Maori Bay lie just around Karbonkelberg.
- Simon's Town — Simon's Town on the western shore of False Bay — Miller's Point, the SAS Pietermaritzburg wreck and the SS Clan Stuart.
- Muizenberg — Muizenberg — the surf corner of northern False Bay and home of the Shark Spotters flag system.
- Gordon's Bay — Gordon's Bay in the sheltered NE corner of False Bay — Steenbras Deep and the Rooiels reefs.
- Hermanus — Hermanus on Walker Bay — yellowtail, red roman and hottentot over granite reef and kelp, with the cliff-path shore dives at Gearing's Point and the New Harbour.
- Gansbaai — Gansbaai — 'Shark Alley' between Dyer Island and Geyser Rock, the world's densest great-white ground (even after the recent orca-driven lull).
- Struisbaai — Struisbaai, just east of Cape Agulhas — a major spearo town with shallow wrecks (8–15 m), reef and passing pelagics; yellowtail, kob and musselcracker.
- Arniston — Arniston (Waenhuiskrans) — a quiet fishing village on the Agulhas coast with reef and the famous sea cave; kob, galjoen and musselcracker.
- Langebaan — Langebaan on the west coast — cold Benguela water and a turquoise lagoon, but the lagoon is a no-take MPA sanctuary and a protected estuary.
- Saldanha — Saldanha Bay — a large sheltered west-coast bay, cold Benguela water with snoek and yellowtail on the offshore reefs and a WaveNet buoy for real swell.
Garden Route
Garden Route (Mossel Bay, Knysna, Plettenberg) — água quente de transição no encontro de duas correntes; mais clara para leste.
- Stilbaai — Stilbaai (Still Bay) on the southern Cape — reef diving for kob, red roman and yellowtail, with ancient stone fish-traps in the intertidal.
- Mossel Bay — Mossel Bay — sheltered from the SW by Cape St Blaize, fed by both Benguela and Agulhas: trophy yellowtail (the Gouriqua fish run to 20 kg), kob and musselcracker.
- Knysna — Knysna — ocean reefs outside the Heads for kob, white steenbras, musselcracker and garrick, entered through one of the most dangerous tidal inlets in the world.
- Plettenberg Bay — Plettenberg Bay — sheltered from the SW by the Robberg peninsula; yellowtail, tuna and reef fish over Garden Route reef.
Eastern Cape
Cabo Oriental (Jeffreys Bay, Gqeberha, East London) — a corrente quente de Agulhas, a Sunshine Coast; bom gamefish.
- Jeffreys Bay — Jeffreys Bay — the famous SW-swell point, with kob, garrick and blacktail over reef and the St Francis coastline nearby.
- Gqeberha — Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth) on Algoa Bay — the 'Wildside' west of Cape Recife, sheltered from the SW; kob, musselcracker and reef fish, with the Ngqura WaveNet buoy offshore.
- Port Alfred — Port Alfred on the Sunshine Coast — reef diving for kob, musselcracker and garrick either side of the Kowie River mouth and marina.
- East London — East London — warm Agulhas water, gamefish and reef at Nahoon and the offshore wrecks, with the East London WaveNet buoy.
Wild Coast
Costa Selvagem (Coffee Bay, Port St Johns) — a costa remota do Transkei, corredor do Sardine Run; Agulhas junto à costa, água clara.
- Coffee Bay — Coffee Bay on the Wild Coast — remote, seldom-dived reefs and gamefish in warm Agulhas water, off a dramatic river-mouth beach.
- Port St Johns — Port St Johns — the Wild Coast hub at the Mzimvubu River mouth, on the Sardine Run corridor: warm Agulhas water, gamefish and dramatic gorge scenery.
KwaZulu-Natal
KwaZulu-Natal (Durban, Umkomaas, Sodwana) — a corrente quente de Agulhas, gamefish e couta; atenção às redes de tubarão, Sodwana é MPA.
- Margate — Margate on the KZN Lower South Coast — warm Agulhas water, couta (king mackerel) and gamefish, and the launch for Protea Banks boat diving.
- Shelly Beach — Shelly Beach — the launch for Protea Banks, one of the world's premier shark-and-gamefish reefs (27–40 m): tuna, billfish, musselcracker, snoek and shad.
- Port Shepstone — Port Shepstone — the South Coast hub at the Mzimkulu River mouth; warm Agulhas water, couta and gamefish over reef.
- Scottburgh — Scottburgh — drift reefs on the KZN South Coast and the closest town to Aliwal Shoal from the south; warm Agulhas water, couta, snoek and reef gamefish.
- Umkomaas — Umkomaas — the launch (~5 km off) for Aliwal Shoal, a world-class reef with the MV Produce and SS Nebo wrecks; king mackerel, dorado and tuna in warm Agulhas water.

- Sodwana Bay — Sodwana Bay — the northernmost tropical coast, viz 20–30 m and water to 30 °C, launching from Jesser Point over Two-Mile to Nine-Mile reefs.
Perguntas frequentes
Regras em vigor em 2026 — confirma sempre com o DFFE (Dept of Forestry, Fisheries & the Environment) antes de ir. É obrigatória uma licença (PERMIT) de pesca recreativa. Aplicam-se limites de captura/tamanho e defesos; as Áreas Marinhas Protegidas (p. ex. Tsitsikamma, iSimangaliso, De Hoop) são no-take. O que é o Sardine Run e é perigoso?
O Sardine Run (jun–jul na costa de KZN, pico jun; os cardumes deixam o Cabo Oriental/Wild Coast desde maio) — milhares de milhões de sardinhas sobem para nordeste pela costa de KZN, seguidas de gamefish, tubarões e golfinhos. Destaque de inverno para a caça, mas também um pico de perigo: as redes são retiradas (drumlines ficam), os predadores enchem o raso junto às bait-balls. Afasta-te das bait-balls e da água turva.
