Rules change. Before heading out, check with the Bahamas Department of Marine Resources and the Fisheries Resources Act; spearguns are banned — sling/pole spear only.
Spearguns are banned across The Bahamas, so George Town sling fishing is strictly Hawaiian sling or pole spear on breath-hold. The town is the Great Exuma hub on Elizabeth Harbour, but the legal water is not the harbour anchorage itself. The useful pattern is to work open reef and dropoff outside no-take areas: reefs south of the Exuma Cays Land & Sea Park boundary, Rudder Cut Cay dropoff, Stocking Island ocean reef, and Hog Cay / Little Exuma south reef. Moriah Harbour Cay National Park and Jewfish Cay Marine Reserve are no-take. The Exuma cuts can run 3-5 knots, so slack water is the only sensible window for those passages. Keep the 200-yard Out-Island shore distance, carry the visitor permit or use a licensed charter, and leave scuba, compressors, and spearguns out of the setup.
George Town is boundary-heavy because legal and no-take Exuma water sit close together. The marks below keep the focus on sling and pole-spear ground outside reserves. Where coordinates are approximate, confirm the park line and the 200-yard shore distance before any take. The Exuma cuts deserve their own caution: current is listed at 3-5 knots, and the workable window is slack only.

George Town is listed as sheltered with a Bahamas-banks tidal regime, but the Exuma cuts are the hazard that matters. A 3-5 knot current can turn a clear passage into a bad drift. Treat slack water as the working window, then verify wind and pickup before entering. The caution sector runs 80-200 degrees, with the worst direction near 135 degrees. No local webcam or buoy station is available for George Town.
The north-south split matters. The Exuma Cays Land & Sea Park lies to the north and is no-take; Moriah Harbour Cay National Park sits between Great and Little Exuma and is also no-take. Jewfish Cay Marine Reserve is not hunting water. Practical George Town hunting means checking that the reef is outside those closures, then staying beyond 200 yards from shore with a sling or pole spear. Do not carry any banned gun-style gear as a backup.
Only Hawaiian sling or pole spear is legal for this style of fishing, and it must be breath-hold only. Scuba and compressors are banned. No spearfishing within 1 mile of New Providence, 1 mile of Freeport's south coast, or 200 yards of any Out-Island shore. Foreign visitors need a sport-fishing permit, or must fish from a licensed charter. The catch is personal-use only, selling is banned, spear use needs a written endorsement, and competitions are banned.
George Town reef marks list snapper, grouper, hogfish, mutton snapper, and mahi on the dropoffs. Nassau grouper is closed from 1 Dec to 28 Feb, with a 3 lb minimum outside the closure and head, tail, and skin intact on landing. Black grouper is also a 3 lb minimum fish. Hogfish sits on the sand-reef interface, and lionfish culling is encouraged year-round. Crawfish and queen conch are hand or hook only, not spear targets. Turtles, sharks, and corals are no-take.
