Spearfishing at Geraldton works from the beach, and the reason is legal as much as practical. Boat-based demersal fishing in the West Coast bioregion, spearfishing included, is closed until Spring 2027, so the reef species this coast is known for are a shore-entry proposition right now — and dhufish is not takeable by spear at all. Point Moore under the lighthouse and Coronation Beach north of town give 3-8 m over limestone with pink snapper and baldchin groper, while Drummond Cove and the town beaches hold 2-6 m of rock and weed. Anything in the 200 to 320 degree sector shuts the shore down.
Every mark here is a shore entry, which matters because the boat side of the demersal fishery is closed. Depths inshore of the survey grid are unmeasured, so confirm them in the water rather than on a chart.

Rules change and vary BY STATE. Before heading out, check with your state's fisheries (NSW DPI, Fisheries QLD, VFA, DPIRD WA, PIRSA, NRE Tas, NT Fisheries) and the marine-park zoning map.

Not from the shore. DPIRD requires no licence for shore-based fishing, shore-based spearfishing included. The moment a powered boat is involved you need a Recreational Fishing from Boat Licence, listed at AUD 40, with rock lobster and abalone licences at AUD 50 each. Licences run 12 months from issue, there is a 10 per cent discount when several are bought together, and half fees apply for under-16s, Seniors Card holders and listed pensioners.
It closes the boat, not the beach. Recreational fishing for demersal scalefish by boat is shut in the West Coast bioregion, which runs from the Kalbarri and Zuytdorp Cliffs area down to Augusta and Black Point, until Spring 2027, and DPIRD counts spearfishing inside that closure. Land-based spearfishing for the demersal species stays open — with one exception written into the guide: land-based spearfishing for West Australian dhufish is not permitted at any time.
Baldchin groper has no minimum size and a bag of 2 in the West Coast bioregion, 1 at the Abrolhos, where the Islands FHPA closure from 1 October to 31 December binds land-based fishers too. Pink snapper stays open to shore entry: DPIRD sets 500 mm between Lancelin and Black Point and 410 mm between Lancelin and Zuytdorp, so check which stretch your mark sits in. Breaksea cod carries a bag of 2 in this bioregion.
The nearshore species, which the closure does not touch, inside a 16-fish nearshore mixed bag. Western Australian salmon is 300 mm with a bag of 4 and runs in big autumn schools. Tailor is 300 mm bag 8, with only 2 fish over 500 mm. Skippy, the local silver trevally, is 250 mm bag 8; King George whiting 280 mm bag 12; snook 300 mm bag 8; herring has no size limit and a bag of 20. Samsonfish and yellowtail kingfish are 600 mm inside a large-pelagic mixed bag of 3.
Go early. The shore faces about 260 degrees, anything from 200 to 320 degrees puts swell on it, and the afternoon breeze is the local certainty. The Department of Transport coast cam on the Geraldton foreshore refreshes about once a minute and reads surface chop, not visibility. Protected in WA: grey nurse, white, whale and speartooth sharks, all sawfish, potato rockcod, Queensland groper, humphead Maori wrasse, both seadragons, and black and smooth stingrays in this bioregion.
