Spearfishing Sydney, Newcastle and the Illawarra
Metropolitan NSW is urban temperate reef: sandstone platforms, kelp gutters and breakwalls from Newcastle through the Sydney beaches to Bass Point. Aquatic reserves, not distance, are the thing to get right.
The coast faces roughly 100-110 degrees and the bad sector runs about 40-190 degrees, so a southerly or easterly swell shuts almost every open ledge at once. What is left is structure: the Newcastle breakwall and Merewether platforms, Long Reef and the Northern Beaches headlands, Maroubra and South Maroubra reef, Kurnell's Steps and Bare Island in Botany Bay, and the Bass Point complex at Wollongong with the sheltered Gravel Loader working in a southerly. Depths are shore-swimmable - 2 to 15 m on most marks - and the fish are snapper, yellowtail kingfish, silver trevally, luderick, black drummer and dusky flathead, with wobbegongs and Port Jackson sharks on the bottom.
This is a year-round coast with a warm-half bias: the settled late-spring-to-autumn spell brings the cleanest water and the kingfish, while winter holds drummer and luderick on the platforms. Because every headland here reads the same swell sector, the day is decided by a forecast and a fallback rather than a season - Cronulla's Shelly/Oak Park, Flagstaff Point at Wollongong and the harbour-side marks work when the ocean side is closed out.
Rules: NSW DPIRD Fisheries. The recreational fishing fee applies to spearfishers, it is snorkel only (SCUBA for scallops and sea urchins only), no hookah, no light with a speargun, no powerheads, lobster by hand, and no spearfishing on ocean beaches except the last 20 m at each end. Eastern blue groper is protected from the spear and grey nurse sharks are protected outright - Magic Point off Malabar and the Monuments at Cape Solander are known haunts. The aquatic reserves are the local trap: Cabbage Tree Bay (Shelly Beach, Manly) and Bushrangers Bay at Bass Point are no-take; Clovelly and Gordons Bay are closed to spearfishing under the Schedule 4 closure; the surrounding Bronte-Coogee Aquatic Reserve additionally protects invertebrates and marine vegetation; Long Reef, Barrenjoey and Narrabeen Head are reserves where finfish spearfishing is expressly permitted. Read https://www.dpird.nsw.gov.au/fishing/recreational/resources/spearfishing and the reserve list before you assume. Safety, conditionally: heavy boat traffic at the harbour entrances, ocean pools and swimmers everywhere (keep 50 m clear), and a moderate-to-high white-shark rating on this stretch of coast.

FAQ
Can you spearfish inside Sydney?
Yes, but not everywhere. Cabbage Tree Bay at Manly and Bushrangers Bay at Bass Point are no-take, and Clovelly and Gordons Bay are closed to spearfishing under the Schedule 4 closure - look only. The surrounding Bronte-Coogee Aquatic Reserve additionally protects invertebrates and marine vegetation; read its notice before you assume anything about its other water. Long Reef, Barrenjoey and Narrabeen Head are reserves where finfish spearfishing is expressly allowed - the reserve label alone does not tell you which is which.
Do you need a licence?
Yes - the NSW recreational fishing fee is mandatory for spearfishers anywhere in the state, and you must carry proof of payment.
When does this coast dive best?
It works year-round, but the settled late-spring-to-autumn spell brings the cleanest water and the kingfish. The bad swell sector is roughly 40-190 degrees, so a southerly or easterly change shuts the open ledges regardless of the month.
What are the safety risks?
Boat traffic at the harbour and inlet entrances, swimmers and surfers on every beach (the code of practice asks for 50 m separation), swell washing rock platforms, and a moderate-to-high white-shark rating in our data for the Sydney-Illawarra stretch.
