The verdict comes from seven water factors and hard safety gates — not ten tabs. Go or stay.

How we score the water

Our own model

Our own forecast engine — not a third-party widget. It weighs these water factors into one go-or-stay verdict for this coast; the 0–10 dial is that verdict, read out as a number.

01
Swell & wave memory
Height, period and direction of the swell, plus the wake of recent storms — an old storm still stirs the water, and the engine remembers.
02
Wind & gusts
Speed and gusts, hour by hour — wind speed and an onshore push chop the surface and cut visibility.
03
Tide phase
Timing and range of the tide, calibrated per coast — big spring tides pull the verdict toward caution.
04
Water temperature
Sea-surface temperature — sharply cold water vetoes a green verdict.
05
Currents & outflow
Direction and drift of the current — it pushes you, and it drags turbid coastal water across where you dive.
06
Rain runoff & air clarity
Rain muddies the water inshore through land runoff, while fog and haze cut visibility at the surface.
07
Coast shape & exposure
How the coast faces the swell — a sheltered cove keeps the water clean; an exposed, head-on point takes a penalty.

Safety gates

  • Thunderstorm forecast — an instant red, no exceptions.
  • An official warning (MeteoAlarm / IPMA) — yellow, or red for the higher ranks.
  • Missing input data — a would-be green is capped to yellow rather than overstated.
  • Strong disagreement between forecast models — a green day is pulled back to yellow.
  • Night hours — where night spearfishing is banned by law the window is forced red; where it is legal (Australia outside NSW, New Zealand, South Africa) it is capped at yellow, never green.

It all folds into a single 0–10 score and one verdict: go or stay.

A forecast, not a guarantee — the sea has the last word.

The water column

Visibility and what drives it — post-storm clearing, river plume, temperature and the thermocline.

What it is

A marine instrument,
go / no-go for solo hunting.

spearo.app folds wind, wave, swell period, visibility, tides, water temperature and risk into a single verdict — go to the spot or not. It computes 7 days ahead from open marine models (Open-Meteo, IPMA), with no sign-up and no accounts. Built for solo spearfishing off the rocks, where any mistake costs dearly.

Now live: 1391 spots across 205 stretches of coast — mainland Portugal, Madeira and the Azores.

Cape Skilomaga (S Agistri)Aegina

window

tide
Forget the level, it moves centimetres. The cape is about current: water squeezes past the point and speeds up there, and it does not always run the way the surface suggests. Throw the buoy in before you kit up and watch where it goes — if it walks away from the boat faster than you can swim, the day is over.
shelter
A cape on the southern side of Agistri, with the island's wooded ridge at your back. That ridge is what shelters you: the summer meltemi out of the north crosses Agistri and drops onto the far side, leaving the southern faces workable. The cape itself sticks out, so one side of it is always more sheltered than the other.
conditions
North and north-east are the days to come. With a settled southerly, and especially anything with west in it, the swell wraps round the point and both faces churn — that is when the cape stops being a spot and becomes a washing machine. Even a moderate wind matters more here, because you will be working in current.
hazard
The real risk is being carried off the point into open water with nobody watching — work with a partner and keep the boat following you, not anchored. Our map pin here is approximate, so read the shape of the cape on the day rather than trusting a coordinate. Grouper is one fish per day, and the daily cap is 5 kg.
access
Boat only, and a boat that stays with you: this is drifting work, not anchoring work. From Skala or Megalochori it is a short hop round the south of Agistri; Perdika is the other side of the channel. Coordinates for this cape are approximate, so give yourself time to run the shoreline and pick the point by eye before you get wet.

Cape wall/slope with strong currents and resident big fish, boat; advanced, a current caveat. Coords approx.

Doroussa islet + Avantis III wreckAegina

window
—
tide
Tide is not a factor — a few tens of centimetres. Depth is: the bottom drops away right at the rock, which is why boats moor here in deep water. The current across the narrow strait between Doroussa and Agistri is usually mild, but it sets along the hull, so it will carry your float away from you while you are down.
shelter
Doroussa is an uninhabited rock south-west of Agistri, split from it by a narrow strip of water. Agistri's pine ridge stands between the site and the north, so the south-western face where the wreck lies keeps its lee through the meltemi. Open the other way: anything from the south-west runs in across open Saronic water.
conditions
North and north-east are your days — the ridge holds and the water over the wreck stays clear enough to see the hull shape from the surface on a good morning. With south or south-west the site closes: chop over deep water, the boat will not sit on the mooring, and you lose the reference you need on a deep drop.
hazard
The wreck is deep: the bow starts around 17–18 m, the propeller sits at 41 and the bottom of it reaches 48. On a breath-hold you have the shallow end and nothing more — no penetration, ever. The plating is corroding and drops from ceilings, the edges cut, and a man died here in 2004. Scuba with a gun is banned in Greece anyway.
access
Boat only. From Skala or Megalochori on Agistri it is a short run round the south side; from Perdika it is longer, across open water. Use the permanent mooring buoy on the wreck rather than dropping an anchor into the hull. If you come down from Piraeus, remember that all fishing off western Salamina, spearguns included, is banned year-round.

Rocky islet off Aponisos plus the modern Avantis III wreck (2004) ~25–30 m, boat; wind-sheltered SW, a modern hull, spearable.

Moni isletAegina

tide
The level here moves a few tens of centimetres and means nothing. What you actually plan around is the current in the 500 m channel between the cape and the islet: it builds through the day, runs hardest off the two tips, and after several days of meltemi it keeps pushing even when the surface looks dead.
shelter
Moni sits about 500 m off the Perdika cape and works as its own breakwater. The bulk of Aegina stands between you and the north, so the summer meltemi passes over the top and leaves the south and west faces of the islet flat. Anything from the south-west arrives with nothing in the way.
conditions
Go with north or north-east, right through the meltemi: Aegina takes it and the islet's south side stays workable with the good visibility the place is known for. With south or south-west, stay home — the swell wraps both ends of the islet, the rock face churns and you lose the clarity that makes the crossing worth it.
hazard
Moni is a declared protected natural area — a park with deer and peacocks, run with organised landings. No blanket ban on hunting the water sits in our register, but check with the Aegina port authority before you go and do not step ashore. Stay 200 m off the organised beach and its swimmers.
access
Realistically this is boat work: your own hull or a RIB out of Perdika, ten minutes across, twenty from Aegina town. The passenger kaikia will not take you out with a gun. Drop in on the outer side, away from the beach, and let the boat hold the buoy line while you work along the rock. Aegina Divers in town is the landmark.

SW off Perdika (~500 m off the cape), vertical rock, a seal cave, building currents, good viz, boat; the S/SW summer lee and best Aegina structure, high boat traffic.

tide
The one thing that moves here is the channel flow between the Perdika headland and Moni, and it runs right over the reef line. On a windless morning it is the only current you will meet, and it is enough to walk your float off the reef head you were working. Level itself is irrelevant, as everywhere in this sea.
shelter
This is the reef band running out from the Perdika headland towards Moni, and its shelter comes from two directions at once: Aegina behind it against the north, Moni ahead of it against anything the channel throws back. It is more exposed than the village beach, though — out here you feel a wind the shore does not.
conditions
North and north-east days again, but the tolerance is narrower than on the beach: a moderate southerly already makes the boat snatch on its anchor over the reef, and once you cannot hold a stable position above a reef head the fish see you first. Sea bream and gilthead sit tight when the water is stirred.
hazard
This strip is the busiest water on the island: the Perdika–Moni kaikia cross it all day, plus water taxis, day-cruise boats and yachts running for the anchorage. Your buoy is mandatory and you stay inside 50 m of it. Never surface in the middle of the lane — from a fast hull a head in the water is invisible until it is too late.
access
Out of Perdika harbour it is a few minutes in a small boat or a RIB, and that is how this one is worked. Anchor on sand between the reef heads, never on the reef itself, and put the boat where an approaching hull will see it side-on. You can swim out from the coast, but the crossing puts you in the boat lane and it is not worth it.

tide
Level does nothing here. Two other things do: after a few days of meltemi the water pushed round the island comes back along this shore as a slow drift, and after rain the runoff from the village road lays a brown, warm band over the shallows that can take a day to clear. There is also a light pull at the mouth of the small bay.
shelter
The village shore faces south, straight at Moni, with the whole island behind you. That mass is the shelter: the north wind that closes the far side of Aegina never reaches the water here. What does reach it is anything from the south and south-west, coming in across the open channel with no cape to break it.
conditions
This is your bad-weather fallback: with north or north-east, even a hard one, the water in front of the village lies flat. With south or south-west it is the opposite — the shore break works the rock and sand shallows, the sand stays in the water, and on three or four metres of depth you end up looking at your own hands.
hazard
The village quay is where the Moni kaikia load, and you have to keep 200 m off harbour works, moored boats and anyone swimming. Local fishermen set nets along this shore and mark them — 200 m from the marks as well. On a shore entry the buoy is not optional: a small boat coming into the bay will see it long before it sees you.
access
Nine kilometres of asphalt from Aegina town brings you into Perdika; park in the village and walk to the water. There is no wide sand here — you get in off rocks and slabs, so wear boots and pick a slot you can climb back out of with fish in your hand. Everything worth working is within a slow swim of the entry.

  • Min. sizes: seabass 25 cm · gilthead 20 cm · white seabream 23 cm · grouper 45 cm · octopus 750 g (ΠΔ 62/2024). Any fish — not under 150 g (ΠΔ 373/85, art. 3§2στ). No-size species (dentex, amberjack, barracuda, parrotfish) — the 150 g minimum only. See the species card.
Safety protocol
  • Sets: watch the wave trains ≥15 min before entering; Hmax ≈ 2×Hs, the wash can run 50 m past the foam line. A lull >10 min with period >12 s = a big set «overdue», do NOT enter; enter right after a full set passes and re-check at minute 30.
  • Exit FIRST: find your exit AND a backup before entering. On a rocky/boulder shore a 0.5 m rise in swell can make the exit impossible — getting pinned/unable to climb out is the main killer.
  • Headland rip: prominent points often have a permanent topographic rip regardless of the model — locate it, enter/exit on the windward side, never swim against it.
  • Cold: wetsuit per the SST chip; the first shiver = a metabolic surge and a drop in breath-hold → get out at the first steady shiver. Cap the session at 45–60 min below 15 °C.
  • Solo discipline: buoy up; tell someone the spot and exit time; conservative breath-hold (never push it in cold/murky/surfy water); visibility <3 m — don't enter.
  • Afternoon wind: on many coasts the wind builds from midday — plan to be out of the water by midday; the chop builds — get out.
  • UV 11:00–15:00 (UVI ≥6): sunscreen and cover up on the surface interval.
  • Solo is a fundamental risk (hypoxic blackout with no buddy). Any doubt = No-go.

Spearfishing in Aegina: spots, seasons and rules

Updated 2026-07-09 · By Oleksandr, spearfisher

Spearfishing Aegina is best treated as a careful Saronic shore and boat plan, not as open-sea trophy hunting. Perdika gives the easier shore angle, Moni gives the strongest structure and current, and Doroussa adds a deeper wreck option by boat. Keep clear of Kolona and the Temple of Aphaia archaeological zones, and watch traffic hard around the Piraeus-Aegina line.

TL;DR

  • Aegina is the easy Saronic day-trip option: mixed rock and sand, 3-20 m ground, and a forgiving learning profile when the sea is quiet.
  • The S/SW side around Perdika, Moni and Agistri is the practical summer side, sheltered from the usual northerly breeze.
  • Boat traffic is the main constraint, especially ferries, hydrofoils and local boats between Piraeus, Aegina, Perdika and Moni.

Where should you spearfish around Aegina?

The useful Aegina choices are all yellow-caution choices. Pick by access and boat exposure: Perdika for the easier shore entry, Moni for vertical rock and visibility, and Doroussa for a boat-only wreck and islet plan.

Use the Aegina port camera as a first sea check, then judge the S/SW side directly. Aegina gives 10-15 m visibility, 3-20 m mixed rock and sand, and a more forgiving setting than the exposed Aegean. Greek legal baseline: May is totally banned (ΠΔ 373/1985); no licence since 2014; freediving-only; 5 kg/day.

    ✓
  • ✓Full ban on taking: Pinna nobilis (πίννα), corals and sponges (ΠΔ 373/85, art. 1§6 + Habitats Directive 92/43).
  • ✓Invasives: taking the lionfish (λεοντόψαρο) is encouraged — ⚠️ venomous spines. The silver-cheeked toadfish (λαγοκέφαλος) ☠️ DO NOT EAT — deadly toxin (TTX), sale banned (Reg. 853/2004, Annex III Sect. VIII Ch. V(E)), it bites. The rabbitfish (γερμανός) is edible — venomous spines.
  • ✓In ANY declared underwater archaeological site, and in the submerged historic sites, spearfishing is BANNED — the act names ψαροντούφεκο in so many words (ΚΥΑ ΥΠΠΟ/ΓΔΑΠΚ/ΑΡΧ/Α1/Φ41/11228/1865, ΦΕΚ 336/Β/2004, part Α §2 δ + part Β). It reaches the sites our map does not draw, too. Do not touch antiquities (Ν. 3028/2002). Map of the zones — the ENALIA geoportal (thalchor-2.ypen.gov.gr/layers/geonode:ENALIA).
  • •The national marine parks of Alonissos/N. Sporades and Zakynthos (Laganas): spearfishing is BANNED in the park. But Alonissos zone Β4 is not solid — ΦΕΚ 1741/Β/2011 reopened four stretches inside it (the N shore Αγ. Δημήτριος–Άκρο Απύθμενο, Μηλιά–Σπαρτίνες, όρμος Κλήμα on Περιστέρα, the Μεγάλος Αδελφός shore), while the same act creates the ΕΕΑΧ Περιστέρας, where fishing IS banned. Our layer paints the park whole, i.e. stricter than the act. Check the limits with the park authority.
  • •The Southern Kynouria/Arcadia diving park: Ν. 4688/2020 establishes underwater parks, but we have not read a spearfishing prohibition inside it in the act — we treat that as NOT PROVEN rather than as confirmed. The park's boundary is not on our map either (the act publishes no coordinates). Ask the Leonidio/Tyros λιμεναρχείο before you go.
  • •Local bans: on top of the national rules, every port authority issues its own (ΓΚΛ/ΕΚΛ and λιμενάρχης decisions). In the ΛΣ-ΕΛ.ΑΚΤ registry we counted ~163 of them that reach a speargun, across 48 ports — our map does NOT draw them. Check your own port: alieia.hcg.gr/prohibitions/local/local17.php.
  • •Locally STRICTER than the national rule: Corfu (Kerkyra) — from 01.04 to 31.10 spearfishing is banned within 200 m of the shore, even where nobody is swimming (απόφαση Λ/Χ Κέρκυρας 2141.1/2939/2024, ΦΕΚ Β΄3269/2024). In practice that closes shore entry on Corfu for the season. We read the act in the registry, not in the ΦΕΚ — confirm with the λιμεναρχείο.
  • •Locally STRICTER: Lefkada — 300 m instead of 200, and not only the speargun: ψαροντούφεκο, nets and longlines are banned within 300 m of those sea areas, beaches and shores of the port district THAT ARE USED BY BATHERS (απόφαση Λ/Χ Λευκάδας 2131.13/1477/2022, in its own words «όπου χρησιμοποιούνται από λουόμενους»). The act ran to 30.09.2022 and we found no extension; an expired act is not proof that the ban is gone. Ask the Lefkada λιμεναρχείο.
  • •Locally STRICTER: Symi — from 15.06 to 15.09 fishing BY ANY MEANS is banned within 200 m of beach areas and in inhabited coastal areas WHERE BATHERS ARE PRESENT OR GATHER (απόφαση Λ/Χ Σύμης 2131.13/882/2016). Separately, year-round: fishing by any means is banned inside the port and its sea zone, except line/rod fishing from land (ΓΚΛ Σύμης, art. 151, ΦΕΚ 362/Β/2004). The acts were copied from the registry, not checked against the ΦΕΚ.
  • •Locally: inside the ports of Lavrio and Kea spearfishing is banned across the WHOLE port water, not merely under the 200 m rule; separately, in front of the hotel beaches (ΓΚΛ Λαυρίου, art. 240, ΦΕΚ 460/Β/1978). The act was copied from the registry, not checked against the ΦΕΚ.
  • •Coming: two new national marine parks are being created (Ionian + South Cyclades, ~27,500 km²). NOT yet in force (ΠΔ under review, mid-2026). Once live — a trawl ban + a seasonal coastal closure 15.04–31.05; in the strict zones spearfishing will be banned. Check before the season.
    • ⛔ Pinna nobilis (πίννα, fan mussel) — full ban on taking/killing (Habitats Dir. 92/43 Annex IV; critically endangered).
