Open in the appSOLO is the biggest risk: underwater you can black out from lack of oxygen silently and fatally, with no one around. Solo is never truly «safe». Below are the best weather windows; carry a buoy, tell someone your plan and exit time, and any doubt — don't go.
Cameras, map and reference — to hand as you come up.
Datça is tempting because local notes give 10-20 m visibility, among the clearest in the Turkish Aegean. That does not make the whole peninsula open. The north and east town rocky edges are the cleanest practical start, 0-20 m from shore. Palamutbükü and Mesudiye can be clear too, but the Datça-Bozburun SEPA and BKA warning makes them check-first water. Knidos to Mersincik is a diving-prohibited archaeological stretch, so the southwest tip stays out of the plan. Deep reefs may hold grouper references, but orfoz is fully protected. Since 1 January 2026, spearfishing by diving needs the Amatör Balıkçı Belgesi with the diving method; use breath-hold only and do not hunt at night.
Start with the north/east town edges if the goal is a practical shore dive. The southern coves are not written off, but Palamutbükü and Mesudiye both carry check-first warnings because of the SEPA/BKA and Knidos context.

SpainRules change and the 6/2 tebliğ renews in September 2028. Before heading out, check with the district agriculture directorate (il/ilçe müdürlüğü) and the coast guard (Sahil Güvenlik); as a tourist, get the permit or go with a licensed guide.
Visibility is the attraction, but boundaries make the decision. Stay away from the Knidos-Mersincik prohibited stretch, treat the south-cove BKA notes as real checks, and remember the strong-current warning at Deveboynu/Knidos. Orfoz is not a target; verify limits before considering any allowed grouper species.
