Compiled by the spearo sea-state engine

The verdict comes from seven water factors and hard safety gates — not ten tabs. Go or stay.

How we score the water

Our own model

Our own forecast engine — not a third-party widget. It weighs these water factors into one go-or-stay verdict for this coast; the 0–10 dial is that verdict, read out as a number.

Swell & wave memory
Height, period and direction of the swell, plus the wake of recent storms — an old storm still stirs the water, and the engine remembers.
Wind & gusts
Speed and gusts, hour by hour — wind speed and an onshore push chop the surface and cut visibility.
Tide phase
Timing and range of the tide, calibrated per coast — big spring tides pull the verdict toward caution.
Water temperature
Sea-surface temperature — sharply cold water vetoes a green verdict.
Currents & outflow
Direction and drift of the current — it pushes you, and it drags turbid coastal water across where you dive.
Rain runoff & air clarity
Rain muddies the water inshore through land runoff, while fog and haze cut visibility at the surface.
Coast shape & exposure
How the coast faces the swell — a sheltered cove keeps the water clean; an exposed, head-on point takes a penalty.

Safety gates

  • Thunderstorm forecast — an instant red, no exceptions.
  • An official warning (MeteoAlarm / IPMA) — yellow, or red for the higher ranks.
  • Missing input data — a would-be green is capped to yellow rather than overstated.
  • Strong disagreement between forecast models — a green day is pulled back to yellow.
  • Night hours — forced red; the window is closed after dark.

It all folds into a single 0–10 score and one verdict: go or stay.

A forecast, not a guarantee — the sea has the last word.

The water column

Visibility and what drives it — post-storm clearing, river plume, temperature and the thermocline.

What it is

A marine instrument,
go / no-go for solo hunting.

spearo.app folds wind, wave, swell period, visibility, tides, water temperature and risk into a single verdict — go to the spot or not. It computes 7 days ahead from open marine models (Open-Meteo, IPMA), with no sign-up and no accounts. Built for solo spearfishing off the rocks, where any mistake costs dearly.

Now live: 1152 spots across 189 stretches of coast — mainland Portugal, Madeira and the Azores.

SOLO is the biggest risk: underwater you can black out from lack of oxygen silently and fatally, with no one around. Solo is never truly «safe». Below are the best weather windows; carry a buoy, tell someone your plan and exit time, and any doubt — don't go.

⚠️ Lagos: min 50 cm, with a speargun max 1/day, closed season 1 Jun–31 Aug (Çizelge 7). A vulnerable, slow-growing species — do NOT take it. Its cousin orfoz is FULLY BANNED.
  • dusky grouper
    Epinephelus marginatus · 8–35 m · 🚫 BANNED (Çizelge 1)
🚫 Orfoz is FULLY BANNED (Çizelge 1, RG 11.08.2024 №32629) — not a legal target. Size is irrelevant: do not take it, release it.
  • pufferfish
    Lagocephalus spp. · 2–40 m · invasive
☠️ DO NOT EAT: deadly TTX toxin (not destroyed by cooking, no antidote). Amateur rule: kill it and throw it back to open sea — bringing it ashore/into a harbour is BANNED (3,770 TL fine). No bounty for amateurs (commercial SUBİS boats only).
  • lionfish
    Pterois miles · 5–40 m · invasive
Invasive (venomous spines!). There is NO official amateur permit/reward for culling — never grab bare-handed, treat a sting with hot water (>45 °C). Flesh is edible.
  • rabbitfish
    Siganus spp. · 2–20 m · invasive
Invasive (Eastern Med). Apparently no dedicated size/count/season limit (not confirmed against the current tebliğ — verify). Venomous spines — remove carefully.
Law
  • Sturgeon (Acipenseridae, mersin) — total ban (Çizelge 1, whole country).
  • Sea trout (Salmo, deniz alası) — take prohibited.
  • Orfoz / dusky grouper (Epinephelus marginatus) — TOTAL ban (Çizelge 1, RG 11.08.2024 №32629). Lagos (E. aeneus) is allowed with a limit (50 cm, 1/day, closed 1 Jun–31 Aug).
  • Mediterranean monk seal (Monachus monachus) — strictly protected; in its shelter caves any diving/hunting/anchoring is banned (m.17/2).
  • Sea turtles (Caretta caretta, Chelonia mydas) — protected, taking/disturbing prohibited.
Safety protocol
  • Sets: watch the wave trains ≥15 min before entering; Hmax ≈ 2×Hs, the wash can run 50 m past the foam line. A lull >10 min with period >12 s = a big set «overdue», do NOT enter; enter right after a full set passes and re-check at minute 30.
  • Exit FIRST: find your exit AND a backup before entering. On a rocky/boulder shore a 0.5 m rise in swell can make the exit impossible — getting pinned/unable to climb out is the main killer.
  • Headland rip: prominent points often have a permanent topographic rip regardless of the model — locate it, enter/exit on the windward side, never swim against it.
  • Cold: wetsuit per the SST chip; the first shiver = a metabolic surge and a drop in breath-hold → get out at the first steady shiver. Cap the session at 45–60 min below 15 °C.
  • Solo discipline: buoy up; tell someone the spot and exit time; conservative breath-hold (never push it in cold/murky/surfy water); visibility <3 m — don't enter.
  • Afternoon wind: on many coasts the wind builds from midday — plan to be out of the water by midday; the chop builds — get out.
  • UV 11:00–15:00 (UVI ≥6): sunscreen and cover up on the surface interval.
  • Solo is a fundamental risk (hypoxic blackout with no buddy). Any doubt = No-go.

Spearfishing in Çeşme: spots, seasons and rules

Updated 2026-07-09 · By Oleksandr, spearfisher

Spearfishing in Çeşme is clear-water, wind-exposed and line-driven. The usable marks are Ayayorgi, Pırlanta/Çiftlik burnu, Dalyan outer rocks, Eşek Adası and Boğaz Adası, but the Ildır closure comes first: east of the Çolak Burnu to Çeşme Uçburnu line is closed, and Ildır with its islets is off limits. No safety rating or spot depth is invented. The 2026 document rule applies on top.

TL;DR

  • Çeşme is open-water Aegean spearfishing around Ayayorgi, Pırlanta/Çiftlik, Dalyan outer rocks, Eşek Adası and Boğaz Adası.
  • The Gulf of Ildır line is the hard stop: east of Çolak Burnu to Çeşme Uçburnu is closed, and Ildır plus its islets are off limits.
  • Since 1 Jan 2026, spearfishing needs an Amatör Balıkçı Belgesi marked for dalma yöntemi, through e-Devlet, valid for 5 years.
  • Breath-hold only, float mandatory: no night, scuba, hookah, spare air, ports, marinas or bathing areas within 200 m from 1 Apr to 15 Nov.

Where can you spearfish in Çeşme?

Use only the west-of-line plan and check wind, ferry movement, current and wind/kite traffic. Depth is qualitative.

Is spearfishing allowed in Ildır Bay?

Not east of the closed line. The Gulf of Ildır diving-prohibited zone is tied to Klazomenai underwater archaeology; east of Çolak Burnu to Çeşme Uçburnu is closed, and Ildır plus its islets are off limits.

What fish can you spearfish in Çeşme?

Local species include dentex, sea bream, pandora, leerfish and octopus. National minimums include gilthead seabream 20 cm, seabass 25 cm, dentex 35 cm, white seabream 21 cm, pandora 15 cm and leerfish 40 cm. Pufferfish is never food.

When is the best time to spearfish in Çeşme?

There is no fixed season. Çeşme is filtered by wind, afternoon build-up, wind/kite traffic, the Chios ferry, current and the closed-zone line.

Do you need a permit to spearfish in Turkey?

Yes. Since 1 Jan 2026, you need an Amatör Balıkçı Belgesi marked for dalma yöntemi, through e-Devlet, valid for 5 years. Tourists need a licensed av-turizmi guide or boat, or a pusula permit. No fee is stated. Do not take dusky grouper (orfoz, Epinephelus marginatus): the ban is total, with no size exception.
