No. It is a bathing and protected-area site with strong current that can pull toward open swell.

Is Mosteiros an alternative?

Only for dead-calm apnea reconnaissance. The lava pools become dangerous as soon as swell crosses the edges.

shelter: Cove tucked behind the headland east and west — sheltered from most southerly swell and from N/NE wind; only opens up to a direct S/SW storm surge.
conditions: Diveable most summer days with S swell under ~1.5 m; crystal water, viz often 30 m+, average depth ~20 m.
hazard: HUNTING BANNED: this is the Caloura marine protected area (PARM) — spearfishing is prohibited (shore rod-and-line was re-allowed, spearfishing not). Plus fishing-boat traffic at the port mouth and a swim zone — stay by the slipway/edge.
access: Drive down to the Caloura fishing port (Caloura Bar); parking, changing rooms, toilets; enter via the slipway or port steps straight into the sheltered cove with its natural pool.

The town's best freedive/snorkel base — but it's no-take: use it for training and scouting, not hunting. Arcos da Caloura lie 300 m offshore — boat-only.

tide: Low-to-mid tide exposes the entry ledges; at high water the surge slams straight into the rock.
shelter: Rocky headland — partly sheltered from W wind by the point itself, but open to direct S and SW swell; far less protected than the port next door.
conditions: Only flat-calm with S swell under ~1 m; on the rocks any surge makes entry and exit dangerous.
hazard: HUNTING BANNED: SAC 'Caloura – Ponta da Galera' inside the same PARM. The dominant physical danger is the rocky entry/exit: as swell builds you may not get out and get pushed onto the rock. Scout from land first.
access: Walk the rocky shore west of Caloura port; park at the port, continue on foot; enter by jumping/down-climbing the rocks.

Pretty rocky bottom, but it's a protected zone and a dangerous entry — pure land scout, not a solo-hunt spot.

window: Early weekday morning at low water; summer in the calmest spells.
tide: Low tide — pools are exposed and filled with clean water; on the flood they get washed over from the sea.
shelter: The lava tubs at the waterline damp the wash a little, but the whole Mosteiros shore is open to strong Atlantic surf from W/NW; no real shelter.
conditions: Only in a flat-calm sea; with any meaningful swell the pools fill with surf and you must not get in.
hazard: The dominant danger is entrapment: as soon as swell builds, surf washes over the rims and you can be swept/pinned onto the lava in seconds; only one pool has a step-ladder exit, the rest you climb out over slippery lava. Enter only in dead-calm and after scouting from the clifftop.
access: Park atop the cliff, steep path ~10 min down / 15–20 min back up; enter one of the lava tubs.

Outside the marine protected zone, but a dangerous open shore — it's a clifftop scout and a flat-calm freedive, not a solo-hunt spot in swell.

tide: Low tide — thermal water is warmer and current weaker; at high tide the Ferraria currents get notably stronger.
shelter: The lava pool is slightly shielded by rocks, but this is the island's west tip — exposed to direct Atlantic W/SW swell; essentially no shelter.
conditions: Only with small W swell (<1 m) and light wind; in any surge the sea washes over the pool wall and drags you out.
hazard: Strong current, especially on the flood, can sweep you out of the pool into open swell; sharp, slippery rocks. It's a bathing zone (lifeguards in season) → spearfishing banned within 300 m, plus the Ferraria–Bretanha PARM. Snorkel/freedive only.
access: Drive down to the point (road reopened May 2026, single-lane traffic-light system); enter the pool by ladder, ropes are rigged in the water — hold onto them.

Not a hunting spot — a geothermal pool with bathers; keep it as a west-coast freedive fallback in small swell, not for the gun.

✓⚠️ Madeira and the Azores run their OWN rules: in the Autonomous Regions the licence, the fees, the permitted gear and the limits are set by the region's own government, not by (DL 246/2000, art. 20.º n.º 1). The mainland figures — the licence fee, the daily cap, the spider-crab closed season, the mainland minimum-size table — do NOT apply here.
✓Breath-hold only: spearfishing may be practised in apnea alone. Scuba, rebreather and hookah are banned; the speargun may not be powered by a detonating charge or by compressed gas (DL 246/2000, art. 9.º n.º 3 — o antigo art. 6.º foi revogado).
✓The catch may NOT be sold: displaying for sale, offering or selling recreational catch is prohibited — it is for the fisher, the household, or donation to charitable, scientific or museum institutions (DL 246/2000, art. 7.º).
✓A loaded speargun out of the water is an offence (DL 246/2000, art. 14.º n.º 2 f). Same article: no fishing closer than the legally set distance from concessioned beaches during the bathing season (n.º 2 d), nor in places closed for health or marine-traffic reasons (n.º 2 e). The exact metres come from the regulation and the capitania — check before you go.
✓The Azores have their own recreational-fishing act — DLR 9/2007/A, as currently in force. Spearfishing: breath-hold only, any breathing apparatus other than a snorkel is banned, and carrying the gun ready to fire out of the water is an offence (art. 8.º n.os 1-4). Not at night: sunset to sunrise (art. 8.º n.º 8).
✓A buoy is mandatory: yellow, orange or red, spherical or cylindrical, carrying a flag (DLR 9/2007/A, art. 8.º n.º 5). Distances: no spearfishing within 300 m of, or inside, class A, B and C harbours; within 100 m of, or inside, class D harbours and portinhos; and within 100 m of places commonly used for bathing (art. 8.º n.os 6-7).
✓The Azorean daily limit is counted in FISH, not in kilos: 10 fish and octopus per person per day, and 2 crustaceans (DLR 9/2007/A, art. 16.º n.os 1-2). Once you reach it you must stop; anything over the limit may not be carried, taken aboard or landed (n.º 4). Grouper (Epinephelus marginatus) may not be taken at all (art. 16.º n.º 5 al. a).
✓A spearfishing licence is compulsory and it is PERSONAL (DLR 9/2007/A, art. 28.º n.º 2 al. a). It is issued for three years, a year, a month or a day; fishing without it is an offence (art. 29.º). Fish of 25 cm or more must be marked with a cut in the tail fin before you leave the spot or bring the catch ashore (art. 18.º).

Safety protocol

Sets: watch the wave trains ≥15 min before entering; Hmax ≈ 2×Hs, the wash can run 50 m past the foam line. A lull >10 min with period >12 s = a big set «overdue», do NOT enter; enter right after a full set passes and re-check at minute 30.
Exit FIRST: find your exit AND a backup before entering. At Cabo Raso/Arriba a 0.5 m rise in swell makes a boulder exit impossible — getting pinned/unable to climb out is the main killer here.
Headland rip: at Cabo Raso there is a permanent topographic rip regardless of the model — locate it, enter/exit on the windward side, never swim against it.
Cold: wetsuit per the SST chip; the first shiver = a metabolic surge and a drop in breath-hold → get out at the first steady shiver. Cap the session at 45–60 min below 15 °C.
Solo discipline: buoy up; tell someone the spot and exit time; conservative breath-hold (never push it in cold/murky/surfy water); visibility <3 m — don't enter.
Nortada (Jun–Sep): wind builds from midday — be out of the water by ~11:00; the chop builds — get out.
UV 11:00–15:00 (UVI ≥6): sunscreen and cover up on the surface interval.
Solo is a fundamental risk (hypoxic blackout with no buddy). Any doubt = No-go.

Spearfishing in Ponta Delgada: spots, seasons and rules

Spearfishing around Ponta Delgada has to start with legality. Sao Miguel's south coast is sheltered from north swell, with volcanic reef, blue water and quick depth, but the obvious shore entries in this set are not huntable recommendations. Porto da Caloura and Ponta da Galera are protected/no-spearfishing areas. Ferraria is a bathing and protected-area current hazard. Mosteiros is outside those protected marks, but is scout-only, exposed lava coast. The honest result is no best shore spearfishing spot to list for Ponta Delgada here.

TL;DR

Ponta Delgada/Sao Miguel has blue, deep, clear island water, but the obvious shore entries are not hunting recommendations.

Porto da Caloura is excellent for apnea and snorkel, with visibility often 30 m+, but spearfishing is prohibited in the Caloura protected area.

Ponta da Galera is also protected, Ferraria is a bathing/protected-current hazard, and Mosteiros is scout-only lava coast.

Conditions and season essentials

Caloura explains the trap: it is sheltered, often diveable in summer with S swell below about 1.5 m, crystal water, visibility often 30 m+ and average depth around 20 m. But spearfishing is prohibited in the Caloura marine protected area, even though shore rod-and-line was re-allowed. Galera sits in the same protected context. Ferraria has strong current, especially on the flood, and spearfishing is prohibited within 300 m of the bathing zone plus the Ferraria-Bretanha protected area. Mosteiros only suits apnea reconnaissance in dead-calm low tide. National rules still apply elsewhere: licence from age 16, apnea only, daylight only and Alfa buoy within 30 m.
