Rules change. Before heading out, check with DGRM / ICNF / Capitania and the defeso table.

Safety protocol
  • Sets: watch the wave trains ≥15 min before entering; Hmax ≈ 2×Hs, the wash can run 50 m past the foam line. A lull >10 min with period >12 s = a big set «overdue», do NOT enter; enter right after a full set passes and re-check at minute 30.
  • Exit FIRST: find your exit AND a backup before entering. At Cabo Raso/Arriba a 0.5 m rise in swell makes a boulder exit impossible — getting pinned/unable to climb out is the main killer here.
  • Headland rip: at Cabo Raso there is a permanent topographic rip regardless of the model — locate it, enter/exit on the windward side, never swim against it.
  • Cold: wetsuit per the SST chip; the first shiver = a metabolic surge and a drop in breath-hold → get out at the first steady shiver. Cap the session at 45–60 min below 15 °C.
  • Solo discipline: buoy up; tell someone the spot and exit time; conservative breath-hold (never push it in cold/murky/surfy water); visibility <3 m — don't enter.
  • Nortada (Jun–Sep): wind builds from midday — be out of the water by ~11:00; the chop builds — get out.
  • UV 11:00–15:00 (UVI ≥6): sunscreen and cover up on the surface interval.
  • Solo is a fundamental risk (hypoxic blackout with no buddy). Any doubt = No-go.

Spearfishing in Afife: spots, seasons and rules

Spearfishing in Afife works a west-facing beach on Portugal's northern coast, a few kilometres north of Viana do Castelo and open to the Atlantic. This is not an any-day coast. It only fishes on a flat day, with northwest swell under about 1 metre and light or easterly wind, because shorebreak over the entry rocks is the main hazard. The best windows fall in spring and early summer, once the water settles. A spearfishing licence is required, and hunting is breath-hold only, no scuba.

Best spearfishing spots in Afife and Carreço

The Afife and Carreço shore is a run of reef patches between sandy beaches, from the Montedor promontory in the south to the Âncora river mouth and Moledo in the north. Every one is a shore entry over rock and the hunting is shallow, close to the stone, so it only dives on a genuinely flat day. Montedor is the best structure on the stretch, but it needs small swell and is not a solo spot. On the flagged, lifeguarded beaches such as Arda, hunt outside the bathing season (15 June to 15 September) and at dawn.

When is the best time to spearfish in northern Portugal?

The good window opens as the sea settles, mostly in spring and early summer, when the northwest swell drops and visibility improves. This is an upwelling coast, so the water is cold and clouds up fast in swell; the priority is always a flat day, not the calendar month. White seabream (sargo) run from April to September and are the dominant reef target. Sea bass (robalo) come in from June to October, shy and best at dawn and dusk. Black seabream (choupa) show from January to May. On lifeguarded beaches the bathing season runs 15 June to 15 September, busy with swimmers and surfers, so hunt off-season or early.

What fish can you spearfish in Afife?

The reef patches give mainly sea bass and white seabream, the two targets that carry the area. Gilthead bream (dourada), very wary, sit over sand and by the stream mouths, and the Forte do Cão ledges hold conger. Black seabream and salema fill out the reef. Minimum sizes are national: sea bass 36 cm, white seabream 17 cm, gilthead 19 cm and black seabream 23 cm. Salema is legal year-round, but don't eat the head or guts because of a poisoning risk. Octopus is regulated by weight, minimum 750 g, and fishes best in autumn. Grouper is fully protected and may not be taken.

What are the sea conditions for spearfishing in Afife?

The coast faces west-northwest and northwest swell is the worst direction here. As a rule, look for northwest groundswell under about 1 to 1.2 metres with light or easterly wind; above that, shorebreak seals the rock entries and the water turns murky. Montedor and Forte do Cão close first, being the most exposed. When the open rock is breaking, the sheltered pockets hold better: the Ínsua tide pools, the Arda cove and the Âncora jetty. Visibility is the deciding factor, and it drops with swell on this cold-water coast.

FAQ

Do I need a license to spearfish in Afife?

Yes. A spearfishing licence is required from age 16, and hunting is breath-hold only; scuba is not allowed. Licences run daily, monthly or annually through the DGRM, at around 25 euros a year. Check the current rules before you go.

Do tourists need a spearfishing license in Portugal?

Yes. The licence requirement applies to visitors as well as residents; there is no tourist exemption. You also need a signalling buoy carrying an Alfa flag, kept within 30 metres of you in the water.

What is the minimum size for white seabream in Portugal?

White seabream (sargo) has a 17 cm minimum size. Other local targets: sea bass 36 cm, gilthead 19 cm and black seabream 23 cm. These are national minimums set by the DGRM, and they change over time, so check the official table.
