Here the taverna timetable rules: from midday until evening boats come in for lunch and pick up the mooring buoys, and the water stops being yours. So it is dawn and the first three hours. June and September–October give the cleanest water. At night, sunset to sunrise, spearfishing is banned.
tide
Calling this a tide is generous: ten to thirty centimetres and the subject is closed. Out at the mouth, though, where the reef breaks down towards forty metres, you feel an along-shore drift: it pulls north and stiffens noticeably after a few windy days. Below twenty-five metres the water turns sharply colder.
shelter
Agni is a tiny bay with three tavernas, squeezed between two rock shoulders; the slope rises straight behind it and the north-west wind passes overhead. Inside it is nearly always smooth. The mouth, though, faces east, and a north-easterly out of the channel walks straight in.
conditions
Maistro and anything westerly are your days: the reef reads from fifteen metres all the way down. A quiet southerly works too. On a north-easterly do not come: the boats on the moorings start swinging, and out on the reef the wave lifts silt from the sand pockets between the rocks.
hazard
The real headache is moored boats: the law wants three hundred metres from them and from any gear, and in summer they fill the whole inner bay. So you work outside, on the reef. The bottom drops to forty-two metres — dive within yourself and always with a partner. The Albanian shore is close, so do not drift east.
access
Tarmac drops from Gimari or Kentroma, a narrow hairpin road with passing places, and at the bottom there is room for a handful of cars — in high summer it is taken by breakfast. A water taxi from Kalami or Kassiopi is easier. Enter off the pebble by the tavernas and swim north along the rock, about seven minutes to the reef.
NE-channel reef 15–42 m, sheltered; rocky reef running deep, shore and boat, traffic in the bays. Inside the 200 m coastal band spearfishing is banned 1 Apr–31 Oct (Corfu port authority, ΦΕΚ 3269/Β/2024).
The grotto needs light: mid-morning to early afternoon is best, with the sun high enough that you can see where you are going at the mouth. The season starts in June, but the water is genuinely clear here in September and October. Night is out, sunset to sunrise, and a torch does not get you round that rule.
tide
The Ionian has no metre tides; the whole thing is counted in centimetres. What you do feel is the water inside the cave: it rocks with the long wave, and in the narrow part it can carry you along. On the drop from thirty-five down there is a sharp cold layer, and below it visibility is usually better than up top.
shelter
The wall sits under sheer cliffs by Cape Plaka, south of Paleokastritsa. The rock behind kills anything coming off the land from the east — even in a fresh easterly a narrow band of smooth water holds under it. To the west, though, it is wide open: nothing between you and Italy.
conditions
You need a settled calm, and not just on the forecast: west swell arrives here a day after the wind has already dropped and rolls into the cave mouth. An easterly off the mountains is the perfect day. If the water at the grotto entrance is breathing back and forth, turn around — deeper down it will only be worse.
hazard
The thirty-five to sixty metre range is past what most people need: work the upper edge and do not stretch down after one fish. In the cave never go where you cannot see the exit — a gun on your back snags on rock. Anything lying on the bottom along this old coast stays where it is; lifting it is illegal.
access
There is no shore entry: sheer rock above, water below. You come by boat from Paleokastritsa, about twenty minutes down the coast, or shorter from Liapades if you can find a hull to hire. Right at the wall it is deep under the keel with nowhere to anchor, so one man stays up top and follows the buoy.

Go out at first light, before the daytime maistro gets up and while the dive centres' boats are still in harbour. The season opens in June, but the clearest water here comes in September and October, when the swell has not started and the sea is still warm. Night hunting is banned nationwide, sunset to sunrise.
tide
Forget the level here, it settles nothing. The flow does: water wraps around the pinnacle and speeds up at its tips, so you drop in on the side the current comes from and come back with it. Cold water climbs the drop from below, and a couple of degrees' difference at thirty metres is normal.
shelter
Kolovri gives you no shelter at all: a standalone rock in open water off the west coast, with sea on every side. The only lee is the downwind flank of the rock itself, and it moves as the wind moves. When Adriatic swell rolls in from west and north-west there is nowhere here to hide.
conditions
You go out here only on flat water or a light easterly blowing off the land, which smooths the surface. Even old dead swell from the west sets up a chop around the rock, and at thirty metres it throws you about along with the fish. This is an advanced spot: if the forecast is doubtful, stay in — there is no shore next to you.
hazard
Thirty metres and more with no shore anywhere near: everything here rests on the boat and your partner — buoy on the water, boat under way, one diver down at a time. Lift nothing from the bottom, that is a criminal matter. And remember there is a closed underwater archaeological rectangle on the south-west of the island; a speargun has no business inside it.
access
Boat only. You leave from Paleokastritsa or from Liapades bay, and the run along the cliff coast takes fifteen to twenty-five minutes depending on the hull. There is nothing to tie to, so the boat waits under way and you need someone at the wheel. No shore option exists — the cliff goes straight into the water.

The cove faces the sunset, so it stays bright underwater late in the day, but in July and August the tourist boats and the water taxi start landing on the beach from eleven. Come at dawn, or take September and October when the sunbeds are gone. The season opens on the first of June; after sunset hunting is banned.
tide
Forget the tide table: ten to forty centimetres either way and that is all of it. Count something else: at three to five metres the water breathes with the surf and shuffles you along the stones. In autumn, after the first rains, murky fresh water comes off the cliffs and lies on top as a thin soapy layer for a day or two.
shelter
The little cove is cut into the Liapades cliffs and looks straight west. The rock walls on either side hold the land wind and keep the water calm right against the stones, but from seaward there is no protection at all: west and north-west wave walks in undamaged and lifts sand off three metres at once.
conditions
You only work here on genuinely flat water. Three to fifteen metres forgives very little: let any swell in and the cove turns to milk, while the exit over round stones becomes acrobatics. An easterly off the hills is your day — then you see the bottom from the shore and the fish sit tight against the walls.
hazard
In summer the beach is organised, with umbrellas and people in the water, and the law wants you two hundred metres clear of swimmers — so work along the cliffs away from the sand. The water taxi comes right in to the shore, so a buoy is mandatory. The rocks at the waterline are full of urchins; without boots and gloves you have no business here.
access
From Liapades village a narrow concrete road drops to Limni beach — steep but driveable, with a small yard and a taverna at the bottom. You enter straight off the pebble, then boulders. No long swim needed: the rock walls start some thirty metres out, and along the cliffs to the north the next coves are about ten minutes away.

Work from first light: by ten the beach fills up, and from midday the excursion boats start running the channel. The season opens on the first of June, and the best water comes in September and October once the crowd has gone. Spearfishing at night is banned all year, sunset to sunrise.
tide
What moves the water here is not the tide but the flow along the channel between Corfu and the Albanian coast: it pulls steadily past the wall and firms up when the strait blows from the north. The level meanwhile swings a couple of tens of centimetres. Around eighteen to twenty metres it turns noticeably colder.
shelter
Pantokrator rises straight behind Nissaki and kills the north-west maistro before it ever reaches the water, so this shore sits calm most of the summer. The channel is narrow and the wave has no fetch to build in. The only open sector is east and north-east, towards the Albanian shore.
conditions
This is the place for the days when Adriatic swell is rolling into the west coast: while Paleokastritsa is out, the water on this wall stands still. A light north-westerly only helps. East and north-east, though, push chop across the channel, the pebble at the entry clouds up and by eighteen metres it is grey.
hazard
The channel here is a working one: ferries and yachts on the Corfu–Saranda run pass right off the wall, so a buoy is mandatory and you stay next to it. The Albanian shore is about three kilometres away — do not swim east, foreign territorial water starts sooner than you think. Keep two hundred metres off the swimmers.
access
A short steep turn-off drops from the Corfu–Kassiopi road down to Nissaki beach; parking is tight, so come early. You get in over the pebble right by the tavernas and you are on rock immediately, so wear boots. The wall runs along the rocky shore, five to ten minutes' swim clear of the beach.

SOLO is the biggest risk: underwater you can black out from lack of oxygen silently and fatally, with no one around. Solo is never truly «safe». Below are the best weather windows; carry a buoy, tell someone your plan and exit time, and any doubt — don't go.

✓No licence required: the was abolished in 2014 (Ν. 4256/2014) — every standing prohibition stays in force all the same.
•Recreational-fisher registry (ΟΣΠΑ / Μητρώο Ερασιτεχνών Αλιέων): Reg. (EU) 2023/2842 obliges member states to register recreational fishing, and the Greek registry is described as being prepared. We found neither an act in force nor a working registry as of 08.2026 — not confirmed. Check gov.gr before you travel.
✓Age: 16+ (under-16 spearfishing is forbidden; ΠΔ 373/85, art. 3§1γ).
✓Daytime only: sunrise to sunset. Night is forbidden (ΠΔ 373/85, art. 3§1β).
✓Freediving only: scuba/any air-supply apparatus is banned — it may not even be carried aboard (ΠΔ 373/85, art. 3§2γ).
✓Distances: ≥200 m from bathers, harbours, moored vessels and marked nets; no hunting in fairways or harbour entrances/exits (ΠΔ 373/85, art. 3§1δ/ε).
✓Buoy MANDATORY: a yellow float + a yellow flag with a red diagonal stripe and the letters «Υ.Δ.», visible from ≥300 m; stay within 50 m of the buoy (ΠΔ 373/85, art. 3§3).
✓Limit: 5 kg/day (or one trophy heavier than the limit). Grouper (Epinephelus) — max 1/day, not banned (ΠΔ 373/85, art. 2§2).
✓Sale/trade of the recreational catch is prohibited (ΠΔ 373/85, art. 1§7).
✓Load the speargun only in the water — never keep it loaded out of the water (ΠΔ 373/85, art. 3§2β). Underwater light while hunting is forbidden (art. 3§2ζ).
✓Sea urchins — 20/day per person and 30/day per boat (ΠΔ 373/85, art. 2§2). Nets at any stage of the hunt are banned, and you may not take the catch out of somebody else's gear or nets (art. 3§2). Sponges and corals are off limits to the recreational fisher (art. 1§6).
✓Pneumatic and band guns are ALLOWED (a myth in English guides). Only spears with an explosive/chemical charge — — are banned (ΠΔ 373/85, art. 3§2δ).
Min. sizes: seabass 25 cm · gilthead 20 cm · white seabream 23 cm · grouper 45 cm · octopus 750 g (ΠΔ 62/2024). Any fish — not under 150 g (ΠΔ 373/85, art. 3§2στ). No-size species (dentex, amberjack, barracuda, parrotfish) — the 150 g minimum only. See the species card.
Safety protocol
Sets: watch the wave trains ≥15 min before entering; Hmax ≈ 2×Hs, the wash can run 50 m past the foam line. A lull >10 min with period >12 s = a big set «overdue», do NOT enter; enter right after a full set passes and re-check at minute 30.
Exit FIRST: find your exit AND a backup before entering. On a rocky/boulder shore a 0.5 m rise in swell can make the exit impossible — getting pinned/unable to climb out is the main killer.
Headland rip: prominent points often have a permanent topographic rip regardless of the model — locate it, enter/exit on the windward side, never swim against it.
Cold: wetsuit per the SST chip; the first shiver = a metabolic surge and a drop in breath-hold → get out at the first steady shiver. Cap the session at 45–60 min below 15 °C.
Solo discipline: buoy up; tell someone the spot and exit time; conservative breath-hold (never push it in cold/murky/surfy water); visibility <3 m — don't enter.
Afternoon wind: on many coasts the wind builds from midday — plan to be out of the water by midday; the chop builds — get out.
UV 11:00–15:00 (UVI ≥6): sunscreen and cover up on the surface interval.
Solo is a fundamental risk (hypoxic blackout with no buddy). Any doubt = No-go.

Spearfishing in Corfu: spots, seasons and rules

Spearfishing Corfu splits cleanly by coast. The NE channel, especially Nissaki and Agni, gives greener sheltered water, shore access and reef walls. The NW around Paleokastritsa has deeper walls, caves and pinnacle-style boat marks for dentex, amberjack and grouper, but W/NW Adriatic swell can shut it down. When the west rolls, hunt the NE channel or stay out.
TL;DR
Corfu is Ionian, so meltemi is not the main summer driver; W/NW Adriatic swell is the real hazard.
The NE channel around Nissaki and Agni is the sheltered side when the west coast is rolling.
NW Paleokastritsa, Kolovri and Ducates are deeper, more dramatic and more exposed, so treat them as advanced boat plans.

What conditions matter most in Corfu?
No meltemi reaches Corfu like the Aegean islands, so summer can be calm. The danger is W/NW Adriatic swell, especially on the Paleokastritsa and Kolovri side. Use the Corfu port camera as a broad open-sea clue, then choose NE or cancel. Greek legal baseline: May is totally banned (ΠΔ 373/1985); no licence since 2014; freediving-only; 5 kg/day. Check local rules for Natura 2000 areas.
✓Full ban on taking: Pinna nobilis (πίννα), corals and sponges (ΠΔ 373/85, art. 1§6 + Habitats Directive 92/43).
✓Invasives: taking the lionfish (λεοντόψαρο) is encouraged — ⚠️ venomous spines. The silver-cheeked toadfish (λαγοκέφαλος) ☠️ DO NOT EAT — deadly toxin (TTX), sale banned (Reg. 853/2004, Annex III Sect. VIII Ch. V(E)), it bites. The rabbitfish (γερμανός) is edible — venomous spines.
✓In ANY declared underwater archaeological site, and in the submerged historic sites, spearfishing is BANNED — the act names ψαροντούφεκο in so many words (ΚΥΑ ΥΠΠΟ/ΓΔΑΠΚ/ΑΡΧ/Α1/Φ41/11228/1865, ΦΕΚ 336/Β/2004, part Α §2 δ + part Β). It reaches the sites our map does not draw, too. Do not touch antiquities (Ν. 3028/2002). Map of the zones — the ENALIA geoportal (thalchor-2.ypen.gov.gr/layers/geonode:ENALIA).
•The national marine parks of Alonissos/N. Sporades and Zakynthos (Laganas): spearfishing is BANNED in the park. But Alonissos zone Β4 is not solid — ΦΕΚ 1741/Β/2011 reopened four stretches inside it (the N shore Αγ. Δημήτριος–Άκρο Απύθμενο, Μηλιά–Σπαρτίνες, όρμος Κλήμα on Περιστέρα, the Μεγάλος Αδελφός shore), while the same act creates the ΕΕΑΧ Περιστέρας, where fishing IS banned. Our layer paints the park whole, i.e. stricter than the act. Check the limits with the park authority.
•The Southern Kynouria/Arcadia diving park: Ν. 4688/2020 establishes underwater parks, but we have not read a spearfishing prohibition inside it in the act — we treat that as NOT PROVEN rather than as confirmed. The park's boundary is not on our map either (the act publishes no coordinates). Ask the Leonidio/Tyros λιμεναρχείο before you go.
•Local bans: on top of the national rules, every port authority issues its own (ΓΚΛ/ΕΚΛ and λιμενάρχης decisions). In the ΛΣ-ΕΛ.ΑΚΤ registry we counted ~163 of them that reach a speargun, across 48 ports — our map does NOT draw them. Check your own port: alieia.hcg.gr/prohibitions/local/local17.php.
•Locally STRICTER than the national rule: Corfu (Kerkyra) — from 01.04 to 31.10 spearfishing is banned within 200 m of the shore, even where nobody is swimming (απόφαση Λ/Χ Κέρκυρας 2141.1/2939/2024, ΦΕΚ Β΄3269/2024). In practice that closes shore entry on Corfu for the season. We read the act in the registry, not in the ΦΕΚ — confirm with the λιμεναρχείο.
•Locally STRICTER: Lefkada — 300 m instead of 200, and not only the speargun: ψαροντούφεκο, nets and longlines are banned within 300 m of those sea areas, beaches and shores of the port district THAT ARE USED BY BATHERS (απόφαση Λ/Χ Λευκάδας 2131.13/1477/2022, in its own words «όπου χρησιμοποιούνται από λουόμενους»). The act ran to 30.09.2022 and we found no extension; an expired act is not proof that the ban is gone. Ask the Lefkada λιμεναρχείο.
•Locally STRICTER: Symi — from 15.06 to 15.09 fishing BY ANY MEANS is banned within 200 m of beach areas and in inhabited coastal areas WHERE BATHERS ARE PRESENT OR GATHER (απόφαση Λ/Χ Σύμης 2131.13/882/2016). Separately, year-round: fishing by any means is banned inside the port and its sea zone, except line/rod fishing from land (ΓΚΛ Σύμης, art. 151, ΦΕΚ 362/Β/2004). The acts were copied from the registry, not checked against the ΦΕΚ.
•Locally: inside the ports of Lavrio and Kea spearfishing is banned across the WHOLE port water, not merely under the 200 m rule; separately, in front of the hotel beaches (ΓΚΛ Λαυρίου, art. 240, ΦΕΚ 460/Β/1978). The act was copied from the registry, not checked against the ΦΕΚ.
•Coming: two new national marine parks are being created (Ionian + South Cyclades, ~27,500 km²). NOT yet in force (ΠΔ under review, mid-2026). Once live — a trawl ban + a seasonal coastal closure 15.04–31.05; in the strict zones spearfishing will be banned. Check before the season.
⛔ Pinna nobilis (πίννα, fan mussel) — full ban on taking/killing (Habitats Dir. 92/43 Annex IV; critically endangered).
