This is a tourist magnet: by ten in the morning both bays are full and coaches are dropping people at the ruins. So dawn, and not a minute later. Season June to October, with September the nicest water. May is closed nationwide, and a gun after sunset is banned all year round.

Tide here is ten to forty centimetres and on the slabs you hardly see it. Something else works: water bends round the southern tip and over the reef at Cape Marmara it runs noticeably, dragging colder water up from below. After rain on the north of the island the clarity drops here too, only later than at Limenas.

The Aliki peninsula sticks out to the south-east and splits the shore into two bays, so with a northerly one of them always sits in the marble's shadow. The island's ridge kills the meltemi outright. The weak side is east and south-east: from there the wave comes in unobstructed and slams into the cape's slabs.

With north or north-west it is always worth the drive: the water on this south-east side is the clearest anything around here gets. With east or south-east, skip it — the wave hammers the marble steps, and the white fine dust it raises hangs for hours. Take the drop off the southern tip on a flat day.
opasnost
The whole peninsula is a declared archaeological monument: a sanctuary of Apollo, two early Christian basilicas and ancient marble quarries, part of them under water. Look, lift nothing — law 3028/2002. Whether the sea part is separately declared, ask the ephorate and the port police. Slabs are sharp and swimmers are close, so keep two hundred metres.

Tarmac takes you right into Aliki village; leave the car by the tavernas and walk the footpath across the ruins onto the neck of the peninsula — five minutes. You get in off marble steps, slippery with weed, so wear boots. From there another ten minutes along the rock to the drop at the southern tip.
Rocky cape + drop-off + a submerged ancient marble quarry (SE) — lee of the north, open E/SE. ⚠️ Submerged antiquity — look, don't touch/raise (L.3028/2002). Shore.
The Limenas waterfront wakes with the Keramoti ferries, around seven, and until then the cape is quiet. Nationally the season runs June into autumn, and from sunset to sunrise spearfishing is banned. For this cape the calendar means nothing: it is prohibited every day of the year.

It all hangs on the strait here: water moves between island and mainland all the time, ferry wash cuts across it, and silt comes off the sand by itself. The level changes by ten to forty centimetres and affects none of that. After rain on the mainland the Nestos outflow greens the water along this whole shore for several days.

The north coast looks across at the Thracian mainland, Keramoti barely seven kilometres off, and that land cuts every southern swell. The north-easterly, however, builds down the strait and arrives intact. The Evraiokastro rocks give a sliver of lee, and only from the west. Spearfishing off this cape is prohibited.

In a northern calm the water at the stones goes glassy; the moment it blows from the north-east there is surge and murk and the place is gone. The difference is only visual, though: the ancient city with its harbour is a declared underwater monument, the gun is prohibited, and for fish you drop south to Potos and Pefkari.

The cape with the old harbour lies inside the declared underwater site «Ancient city and port of Thasos» (ΦΕΚ 74/Β/1987, ΦΕΚ 166/ΑΑΠ/2013); spearfishing is prohibited under ΚΥΑ ΦΕΚ 336/Β/2004, the Ephorate of Underwater Antiquities supervises and nothing is recovered. The ferry lane and moored vessels are right alongside.
pristup
Leave the car in town by the archaeological museum and walk north past the fortress: ten minutes to the Evraiokastro rocks. You climb down over stone and in any swell the entry is nasty. Do not get in off the mole. You come to look — hunting here is prohibited.
N-coast rock and reef — clear in a calm, windward to the meltemi, so it only settles on a light northerly or at dawn. Shore/boat. ⚠️ It sits inside the declared underwater archaeological area of the ancient city and port of Thasos (ΦΕΚ 74/Β/1987, ΦΕΚ 166/ΑΑΠ/2013), where ΚΥΑ ΦΕΚ 336/Β/2004 bans spearfishing — the S coast is the alternative.
Leave early: before nine the sea is usually at its flattest, after that the wind gets up and the crossing turns unpleasant. The season is June to October; May is fully closed in Greece and night is banned with a gun all year. In August dive groups get shuttled out here, so pick the start of the week.

Tide here is a couple of dozen centimetres and changes nothing for you. What changes things is the flow through the gap between the islet and Thasos: it runs along the rock and on the wall you drift off your entry fast. Start into it, and on the boulder steps by the sand keep the boat in sight.
zaklon
This is a bare rock out in open water south of the island, and no land covers you here — you find shelter on the islet itself, moving to whichever side is lee. In meltemi the southern edge works; in a southerly it is the northern one. The gap between the rock and Thasos is always the rougher bit.

What decides here is not the rock but the run out to it: several kilometres of open water from Potos. If there is any southerly with a short chop, do not go — the trip back is the hard part. In a calm the wall down to twenty-four metres stands clear, and the shallow bay side tops out around seventeen.
opasnost
An old wooden wreck and broken pottery lie on the bottom by the islet — look all you want, but touching or lifting anything is a criminal matter under law 3028/2002. The area can be declared an underwater archaeological zone at any time, so check before you go. Add open water: not a solo trip, buoy mandatory.
pristup
Boat only. You run out of Potos or Pefkari, twenty to thirty minutes south under motor; there is no shore route to this rock at all. Watch the mark: the real islet sits some three kilometres south of Psili Ammos beach, not on the village shoreline — take the point off the chart, not off the name.
Walls + a vertical wall to 24 m + an old wooden wreck, S coast ~4 mi off Potos — sheltered, rich wall life. Boat.
The beach is organised, with sunbeds and a campsite, so you work before eight in the morning while the water is still empty. Or late in the day, but strictly before sunset — night is banned. Season is June to October, August is packed here, September and October much calmer. May is closed everywhere in Greece.

The level moves ten to thirty centimetres and you notice it only by a wet stripe on the rock. What matters more: the bay is shallow, the sun warms it right through in a day and there is barely any thermocline. After rain, though, the Platani stream pushes brown silt onto the reef and it hangs for a day or two.

Pefkari bay looks south-west, and northerly wind simply never reaches it: the whole forested spine of the island stands between the water and the meltemi. The little Pefkari headland covers the western edge of the bay. A south-westerly, though, walks straight in, and on a shallow reef there is nowhere to hide.

In meltemi this is the most reliable water on the island: the wind comes off the mountain and lies the bay down. An easterly is workable too. With south-west there is no point coming — the reef sits shallow, the wave stirs sand into rock and visibility is down to two or three metres by lunchtime.

Three limits stack up here: an organised swimming beach — keep two hundred metres off it; Xenios Gate marina about four hundred metres to the east — three hundred metres off it and off any moored boat; and a dive centre right on the sand putting groups in all day. Buoy mandatory. Plenty of urchins on the rock.
pristup
About as easy as it gets: tarmac runs to the beach itself, parking under the pines, and you walk in off the sand. Then a hundred to two hundred metres of swimming to the rocky edge of the bay, where the reef with octopus and bream starts. You can put fins on in the water, the bottom is flat and soft.

Get in at first light — by midday the pleasure boats and dive RIBs come round from Potos and the breeze picks up. The working months run June to October, and September is the pick: fewer people, water still warm. Night is banned across the country, sunset to sunrise.

The flow bends around the cape and, after several days of meltemi, firms up enough to push you off the thirty-metre step — that is the mechanics of the place. The level changes by ten or twenty centimetres over a day. Below twenty a cold layer often sits on top of the wall.
zaklon
Cape Agios Antonios covers this spot from the north: the whole mountain spine of the island stands between you and the meltemi, so it stays flat here even when Limenas is getting hammered. The price is that south and south-west are wide open, and any swell from there lands straight on the rocks.

A north or north-east breeze is exactly your day: the wall runs from four metres down to forty and it stays quiet on it. With south or south-west, stay home — silt lifts off the fifteen-metre shelf and at the little cave mouth around seventeen the water starts surging back and forth.
opasnost
The little cave at seventeen metres runs about ten metres in — not a place to poke a gun and no torch into, and not a solo swim. The wall pulls you down towards forty, where it is easy to lose track of your bottom time. Boats cut straight over the cape, so a buoy is mandatory and you stay by it.
pristup
There is no shore entry: the Thasos–Limenaria road passes above the cape, but no path goes down to these rocks and the spot is done by boat only. Launches are hired in Potos, ten to fifteen minutes out to the reef; Limenaria has boats too, but the run is longer. You dive off the boat, anchored on the sand east of the ridge.

We found neither an act in force nor a working registry as of 08.2026 — not confirmed. Check gov.gr before you travel.

✓Limit: 5 kg/day (or one trophy heavier than the limit). Grouper (Epinephelus) — max 1/day, not banned (ΠΔ 373/85, art. 2§2).

Setovi: prati nizove valova ≥15 min prije ulaska; Hmax ≈ 2×Hs, zapljuskivanje može ići 50 m dalje od linije pjene. Zatišje >10 min uz period >12 s = veliki set koji «kasni», NE ulazi; uđi odmah nakon što prođe cijeli set i provjeri ponovno u 30. minuti.
Izlaz PRVO: nađi izlaz I rezervni prije ulaska. Na kamenitoj obali ili obali s gromadama porast mrtvog mora od 0,5 m može onemogućiti izlazak — ostati zaglavljen/bez izlaza glavni je ubojica.
Struja na rtu: na izbočenim rtovima često postoji stalna topografska povratna struja, bez obzira na model — lociraj je, ulazi/izlazi s privjetrine, nikad ne plivaj protiv nje.
Hladnoća: neopren prema prikazanoj SST; prvi drhtaj = skok metabolizma i pad apneje → izađi na prvi ustrajni drhtaj. Ispod 15 °C ograniči izlazak na 45–60 min.
Disciplina u solo ronjenju: bova gore; nekome reci lokaciju i vrijeme izlaska; konzervativna apneja (nikad ne forsiraj u hladnoj/mutnoj/uzburkanoj vodi); vidljivost <3 m — ne ulazi.
Poslijepodnevni vjetar: na mnogim obalama vjetar jača od podneva — planiraj izlazak iz vode do podneva; kad se digne kratki val — izlazi.
UV 11:00–15:00 (UV indeks ≥6): krema za sunce i pokrij se u pauzama na površini.

Minimum sizes in Greece are NATIONAL, not local: orada 20 cm · lubin 25 cm · kirnja golać 45 cm · šarag 23 cm · ovčica 20 cm · trlja od kamena 11 cm · kirnja glavulja 45 cm · hobotnica 750 g. Species with no EU size carry the 150 g floor only. Grouper (Epinephelus) — max 1/day, not banned (ΠΔ 373/85, art. 2§2).
Is spearfishing banned in May in Thasos?
Yes. May is a TOTAL spearfishing ban for the whole month, every year, across Greece (ΠΔ 373/1985, art. 3§1α) — so in Thasos too. It is law in force, not a draft, and there is no local exemption. Plan June to April.
How many kilos of fish may I keep per day in Thasos?
The daily limit is 5 kg, or one trophy heavier than the limit (ΠΔ 373/85, art. 2§2). Grouper (Epinephelus) — max 1/day. Every fish must be at least 150 g (art. 3§2στ), and selling a recreational catch is prohibited (art. 1§7). The limit is national — in Thasos it is the same as everywhere in Greece.
✓Full ban on taking: Pinna nobilis (πίννα), corals and sponges (ΠΔ 373/85, art. 1§6 + Habitats Directive 92/43).
✓Invasives: taking the lionfish (λεοντόψαρο) is encouraged — ⚠️ venomous spines. The silver-cheeked toadfish (λαγοκέφαλος) ☠️ DO NOT EAT — deadly toxin (TTX), sale banned (Reg. 853/2004, Annex III Sect. VIII Ch. V(E)), it bites. The rabbitfish (γερμανός) is edible — venomous spines.
✓In ANY declared underwater archaeological site, and in the submerged historic sites, spearfishing is BANNED — the act names ψαροντούφεκο in so many words (ΚΥΑ ΥΠΠΟ/ΓΔΑΠΚ/ΑΡΧ/Α1/Φ41/11228/1865, ΦΕΚ 336/Β/2004, part Α §2 δ + part Β). •The national marine parks of Alonissos/N. Sporades and Zakynthos (Laganas): spearfishing is BANNED in the park. But Alonissos zone Β4 is not solid — ΦΕΚ 1741/Β/2011 reopened four stretches inside it (the N shore Αγ. Δημήτριος–Άκρο Απύθμενο, Μηλιά–Σπαρτίνες, όρμος Κλήμα on Περιστέρα, the Μεγάλος Αδελφός shore), while the same act creates the ΕΕΑΧ Περιστέρας, where fishing IS banned. Our layer paints the park whole, i.e. stricter than the act. Check the limits with the park authority.
•The Southern Kynouria/Arcadia diving park: Ν. 4688/2020 establishes underwater parks, but we have not read a spearfishing prohibition inside it in the act — we treat that as NOT PROVEN rather than as confirmed. The park's boundary is not on our map either (the act publishes no coordinates). Ask the Leonidio/Tyros λιμεναρχείο before you go.
•Local bans: on top of the national rules, every port authority issues its own (ΓΚΛ/ΕΚΛ and λιμενάρχης decisions). In the ΛΣ-ΕΛ.ΑΚΤ registry we counted ~163 of them that reach a speargun, across 48 ports — our map does NOT draw them. Check your own port: alieia.hcg.gr/prohibitions/local/local17.php.
•Locally STRICTER than the national rule: Corfu (Kerkyra) — from 01.04 to 31.10 spearfishing is banned within 200 m of the shore, even where nobody is swimming (απόφαση Λ/Χ Κέρκυρας 2141.1/2939/2024, ΦΕΚ Β΄3269/2024). In practice that closes shore entry on Corfu for the season. We read the act in the registry, not in the ΦΕΚ — confirm with the λιμεναρχείο.
•Locally STRICTER: Lefkada — 300 m instead of 200, and not only the speargun: ψαροντούφεκο, nets and longlines are banned within 300 m of those sea areas, beaches and shores of the port district THAT ARE USED BY BATHERS (απόφαση Λ/Χ Λευκάδας 2131.13/1477/2022, in its own words «όπου χρησιμοποιούνται από λουόμενους»). The act ran to 30.09.2022 and we found no extension; an expired act is not proof that the ban is gone. Ask the Lefkada λιμεναρχείο.
•Locally STRICTER: Symi — from 15.06 to 15.09 fishing BY ANY MEANS is banned within 200 m of beach areas and in inhabited coastal areas WHERE BATHERS ARE PRESENT OR GATHER (απόφαση Λ/Χ Σύμης 2131.13/882/2016). Separately, year-round: fishing by any means is banned inside the port and its sea zone, except line/rod fishing from land (ΓΚΛ Σύμης, art. 151, ΦΕΚ 362/Β/2004). The acts were copied from the registry, not checked against the ΦΕΚ.
•Locally: inside the ports of Lavrio and Kea spearfishing is banned across the WHOLE port water, not merely under the 200 m rule; separately, in front of the hotel beaches (ΓΚΛ Λαυρίου, art. 240, ΦΕΚ 460/Β/1978). The act was copied from the registry, not checked against the ΦΕΚ.
•Coming: two new national marine parks are being created (Ionian + South Cyclades, ~27,500 km²). NOT yet in force (ΠΔ under review, mid-2026). Once live — a trawl ban + a seasonal coastal closure 15.04–31.05; in the strict zones spearfishing will be banned. Check before the season.
⛔ Pinna nobilis (πίννα, fan mussel) — full ban on taking/killing (Habitats Dir. 92/43 Annex IV; critically endangered).
Rules change, and the local Λιμεναρχείο (port authority) may impose local restrictions. Before heading out, check the current rules and the declared archaeological zones (ENALIA).
Can I spearfish on scuba in Thasos?
No. Freediving only: scuba and any air-supply apparatus are banned — they may not even be carried aboard (ΠΔ 373/85, art. 3§2γ). In Thasos the rest of the national frame applies too: 16+, daytime only, ≥200 m from bathers, harbours, moored vessels and marked nets, and a mandatory «Υ.Δ.» buoy you stay within 50 m of. Pneumatic and band guns are allowed; only powerheads are banned.
