Tides are irrelevant, centimetres. The thing to watch is the slope itself: on a deep rock ramp like this the cold water sits low, and the boundary between it and the warm water above smears the visibility for a metre or so. On calm mornings that boundary is sharp and clean; after a blow it spreads and shifts.
zaklon
Named for exactly what it is: a pull-off on the Sounio road where you park on the gravel and drop straight in. The coast here runs south-west and the rock steps down from eighteen to forty metres. High ground behind takes the sting out of a north wind; from the sea side there is no headland to hide behind.
uvjeti
On any northerly the water at the entry is dead flat, because the wind is blowing off the land over your head. The 100 to 200 degree sector kills it: on 135 the swell lands on open rock, backwash meets the incoming wave and the first ten metres go to soup while the deep stays clear and out of reach.
opasnost
Depth is what catches people here. The rock falls away fast and a shore hunter with no boat cover ends up alone at thirty metres — take a partner and keep each other in sight. Fishing boats out of Palaia Fokaia work the reef edge and leave marked nets; stay 200 m off those and off anything lying at anchor.
pristup
The simplest entry of the five. Kilometre markers on the Athens–Sounio road, a gravel shoulder, and you are at the water in a minute — but you go in over sharp plates and low ledges, so boots, and a planned exit if any swell is running. From the entry the shallow rock walks you out to the drop in a few minutes.

Forget levels, they move a hand's width. What you do feel is the flow between the islet and the rocks beside it: it squeezes through the gaps and pushes you off the edge of the reef. After several days of meltemi that squeeze is stronger, and warm surface water sits over a cooler, murkier layer down deep.
zaklon
Arsida is a low rocky islet just off Anavyssos beach, and the reef beneath it carries on to the rocks around it and back towards the shore. Tucked round to the north-west, it sits behind the whole Sounio coast: when the meltemi comes down from N and NW this is the calm corner. From S and SW the bay is wide open.

This is your bad-weather answer. On a hard northerly the Sounio points are unworkable and Arsida is still flat. Turn it round — anything in the 100 to 200 degree window and above all a 135 south-easterly — and swell wraps into the bay, sand lifts off the shallows and you end up working blind.
opasnost
Two legal lines meet here and the second one closes you. The year-round Saronikos closure runs from the Kifisos mouth to the 44th km of the Athens–Sounio road, and you do sit south of it; but Arsida itself is inside the declared underwater archaeological area of the Lavreotiki peninsula (ΦΕΚ 175/ΑΑΠ/2015), where ΚΥΑ ΦΕΚ 336/Β/2004 forbids spearfishing outright. The broken amphorae dive operators report on this reef are the reason it was declared. Mask and fins, not a gun.
pristup
A boat job. The islet lies a few hundred metres off Anavyssos beach — five minutes from the small-craft moorings, or a long exposed swim you would rather not do towing a float and a full stringer. Dive centres in Anavyssos and Lavrio run it as a routine site, so their weather call is a fair proxy for yours.

The level does nothing here, a few centimetres either way. What moves is the water in the strait off the cape: along the outer edge of the reef a steady stream runs past the point, and it stiffens after several days of meltemi. Watch how your buoy travels on the surface before you commit to the deep end.

You are on the south-east corner of Attica and there is no land left to hide behind. Rock runs from five down to twenty-four metres under the temple headland. The ridge of the cape covers the western side while the meltemi blows from N and NW; the tip itself is bare to anything out of the east and the south.

Come on a northerly. With the meltemi the cape's own ridge holds the water down on the lee side and you get the cleanest shore water anywhere near Athens. Anything from 100 to 200 degrees, and worst of all a south-easterly around 135, lands swell straight on the rock and cuts you to arm's length.
opasnost
This is the one place where you simply do not shoot: the water in front of the temple rock is protected ground, and in a declared underwater archaeological zone a gun is an offence, not a warning. Add the traffic — Lavrio–Cyclades ferries and trip boats round the cape all season. Buoy high, lift nothing.
pristup
Turn off the Athens–Sounio road at the cape and park either at the site or lower down on the shoulder; from there it is a scramble over sloping rock to the water, so wear boots. The reef starts under your fins, no long swim. By boat it is about fifteen minutes out of Lavrio and the outer edge is far easier to work.
Small caves and colourful canyons, rock 5–24 m under the temple headland, shore-scramble/boat; the clearest Attica shore water. Stay clear of the protected temple frontage.
Level does not count. Being off the beach, this is a place where you feel drift rather than tide: the boat and your buoy will both travel while you are down, and after a spell of hard wind the water is still going somewhere a day later. Drop in up-current of the mark and let it carry you along the structure.
zaklon
This one sits off the Dikigorika stretch of the Anavyssos coast, a good way out from the houses, and being offshore it gets no shelter from the land at all. What you have instead is fetch: a north wind has only a couple of kilometres of it before it reaches you, a south or south-east wind has the whole open sea.

Go on a northerly, when the short chop dies before it gets any size and the boat can hold a mark. Wind from 100 to 200 degrees, and 135 in particular, builds a proper sea out here with nowhere to duck; the ride out turns unpleasant long before the water below turns bad, and that is your cue to go home.
opasnost
There is no shore to swim to. If the boat drifts off, or the engine will not start, you are a long way from anything — so somebody stays aboard and everybody knows the plan. Depth on the wall runs to thirty-five metres, real blackout territory for a shore-fit hunter, and traffic between Anavyssos and Palaia Fokaia crosses here.
pristup
Boat only, and there is no honest alternative. Launch from Palaia Fokaia or from Anavyssos; it is a short run out, count minutes rather than tens of minutes. The wall is not marked on the surface, so you want a GPS mark or somebody who has been — hunting for it blind will burn a whole calm morning for nothing.

Nothing to read on a tide table. What matters is the shallow water itself: after rain the runoff off the road and the flats lays a brown layer over the sand for a day or two, and after several days of meltemi the water pushed into the bight goes back out along the bottom, dragging fine sediment past the wreck.

The wreck lies inside the Anavyssos bight in nine to eighteen metres, over sand and low rock. Nothing stands over it, so all the shelter comes from the land behind: with the wind off the hills from N and NE the surface goes glassy right out to the mark. Open the door from the south and the fetch runs straight in.

Northerlies are the day. In water this shallow the wind direction decides everything: at nine metres a south-easterly around 135 degrees turns the bottom into a sandstorm within the hour and you will not see the hull from three metres away. On a flat morning after a north wind you can count the ribs.
opasnost
The caique is modern, the water over it is not open. This wreck lies within the declared underwater archaeological area of the Lavreotiki peninsula (ΦΕΚ 175/ΑΑΠ/2015), and a speargun is prohibited in every declared area by ΚΥΑ ΦΕΚ 336/Β/2004 — leave it dry and swim the site instead. Wrecks this size also gather line and old net, so nothing goes inside with a float line trailing: shallow is not the same as safe. Local boats cross here, so the buoy is mandatory.
pristup
A shore dive, and a rare one — the road runs along the top and you park close, then walk in over coarse sand and low rock. Ten to fifteen minutes of surface swim puts you over it. Take a bearing off a landmark on the beach first, because at nine metres in average visibility it is easy to swim straight past.

✓Buoy MANDATORY: a yellow float + a yellow flag with a red diagonal stripe and the letters «Υ.Δ.», visible from ≥300 m; stay within 50 m of the buoy (ΠΔ 373/85, art. 3§3).
✓Limit: 5 kg/day (or one trophy heavier than the limit). Grouper (Epinephelus) — max 1/day, not banned (ΠΔ 373/85, art. 2§2).

Sigurnosni protokol
Setovi: prati nizove valova ≥15 min prije ulaska; Hmax ≈ 2×Hs, zapljuskivanje može ići 50 m dalje od linije pjene. Zatišje >10 min uz period >12 s = veliki set koji «kasni», NE ulazi; uđi odmah nakon što prođe cijeli set i provjeri ponovno u 30. minuti.
Izlaz PRVO: nađi izlaz I rezervni prije ulaska. Na kamenitoj obali ili obali s gromadama porast mrtvog mora od 0,5 m može onemogućiti izlazak — ostati zaglavljen/bez izlaza glavni je ubojica.
Struja na rtu: na izbočenim rtovima često postoji stalna topografska povratna struja, bez obzira na model — lociraj je, ulazi/izlazi s privjetrine, nikad ne plivaj protiv nje.
Hladnoća: neopren prema prikazanoj SST; prvi drhtaj = skok metabolizma i pad apneje → izađi na prvi ustrajni drhtaj. Ispod 15 °C ograniči izlazak na 45–60 min.
Disciplina u solo ronjenju: bova gore; nekome reci lokaciju i vrijeme izlaska; konzervativna apneja (nikad ne forsiraj u hladnoj/mutnoj/uzburkanoj vodi); vidljivost <3 m — ne ulazi.
Poslijepodnevni vjetar: na mnogim obalama vjetar jača od podneva — planiraj izlazak iz vode do podneva; kad se digne kratki val — izlazi.
UV 11:00–15:00 (UV indeks ≥6): krema za sunce i pokrij se u pauzama na površini.

Cape Sounio ima ulaze sa stijena poput Cape Sounio reef, Arsida (Anavyssos) i Simos Wreck (Anavyssos). The SE tip of Attica and the best water within a day of Athens: exposed rock reefs and drop-offs clearing to 15–20 m, real grouper and dentex ground. Long season, June to October (May is the national closed month). The sheltered Saronic opens on most calm mornings; peak is high summer.

The species cards list 22 species with real presence in this basin; the strongest here are šarag, hobotnica, kirnja glavulja, zubatac, pagar i orada. Minimum sizes in Greece are NATIONAL, not local: šarag 23 cm · kirnja glavulja 45 cm · pagar 18 cm · orada 20 cm · lubin 25 cm · ovčica 20 cm · konj 25 cm · hobotnica 750 g. Species with no EU size carry the 150 g floor only. Grouper (Epinephelus) — max 1/day, not banned (ΠΔ 373/85, art. 2§2).
Is spearfishing banned in May in Cape Sounio?
Yes. May is a TOTAL spearfishing ban for the whole month, every year, across Greece (ΠΔ 373/1985, art. 3§1α) — so in Cape Sounio too. It is law in force, not a draft, and there is no local exemption. Plan June to April.
How many kilos of fish may I keep per day in Cape Sounio?
The daily limit is 5 kg, or one trophy heavier than the limit (ΠΔ 373/85, art. 2§2). Grouper (Epinephelus) — max 1/day. Every fish must be at least 150 g (art. 3§2στ), and selling a recreational catch is prohibited (art. 1§7). The limit is national — in Cape Sounio it is the same as everywhere in Greece.
✓Full ban on taking: Pinna nobilis (πίννα), corals and sponges (ΠΔ 373/85, art. 1§6 + Habitats Directive 92/43).
✓Invasives: taking the lionfish (λεοντόψαρο) is encouraged — ⚠️ venomous spines. The silver-cheeked toadfish (λαγοκέφαλος) ☠️ DO NOT EAT — deadly toxin (TTX), sale banned (Reg. 853/2004, Annex III Sect. VIII Ch. V(E)), it bites. The rabbitfish (γερμανός) is edible — venomous spines.
✓In ANY declared underwater archaeological site, and in the submerged historic sites, spearfishing is BANNED — the act names ψαροντούφεκο in so many words (ΚΥΑ ΥΠΠΟ/ΓΔΑΠΚ/ΑΡΧ/Α1/Φ41/11228/1865, ΦΕΚ 336/Β/2004, part Α §2 δ + part Β). It reaches the sites our map does not draw, too. Do not touch antiquities (Ν. 3028/2002). Map of the zones — the ENALIA geoportal (thalchor-2.ypen.gov.gr/layers/geonode:ENALIA).
•The national marine parks of Alonissos/N. Sporades and Zakynthos (Laganas): spearfishing is BANNED in the park. But Alonissos zone Β4 is not solid — ΦΕΚ 1741/Β/2011 reopened four stretches inside it (the N shore Αγ. Δημήτριος–Άκρο Απύθμενο, Μηλιά–Σπαρτίνες, όρμος Κλήμα on Περιστέρα, the Μεγάλος Αδελφός shore), while the same act creates the ΕΕΑΧ Περιστέρας, where fishing IS banned. Our layer paints the park whole, i.e. stricter than the act. Check the limits with the park authority.
•The Southern Kynouria/Arcadia diving park: Ν. 4688/2020 establishes underwater parks, but we have not read a spearfishing prohibition inside it in the act — we treat that as NOT PROVEN rather than as confirmed. The park's boundary is not on our map either (the act publishes no coordinates). Ask the Leonidio/Tyros λιμεναρχείο before you go.
•Local bans: on top of the national rules, every port authority issues its own (ΓΚΛ/ΕΚΛ and λιμενάρχης decisions). In the ΛΣ-ΕΛ.ΑΚΤ registry we counted ~163 of them that reach a speargun, across 48 ports — our map does NOT draw them. Check your own port: alieia.hcg.gr/prohibitions/local/local17.php.
•Locally STRICTER than the national rule: Corfu (Kerkyra) — from 01.04 to 31.10 spearfishing is banned within 200 m of the shore, even where nobody is swimming (απόφαση Λ/Χ Κέρκυρας 2141.1/2939/2024, ΦΕΚ Β΄3269/2024). In practice that closes shore entry on Corfu for the season. We read the act in the registry, not in the ΦΕΚ — confirm with the λιμεναρχείο.
•Locally STRICTER: Lefkada — 300 m instead of 200, and not only the speargun: ψαροντούφεκο, nets and longlines are banned within 300 m of those sea areas, beaches and shores of the port district THAT ARE USED BY BATHERS (απόφαση Λ/Χ Λευκάδας 2131.13/1477/2022, in its own words «όπου χρησιμοποιούνται από λουόμενους»). The act ran to 30.09.2022 and we found no extension; an expired act is not proof that the ban is gone. Ask the Lefkada λιμεναρχείο.
•Locally STRICTER: Symi — from 15.06 to 15.09 fishing BY ANY MEANS is banned within 200 m of beach areas and in inhabited coastal areas WHERE BATHERS ARE PRESENT OR GATHER (απόφαση Λ/Χ Σύμης 2131.13/882/2016). Separately, year-round: fishing by any means is banned inside the port and its sea zone, except line/rod fishing from land (ΓΚΛ Σύμης, art. 151, ΦΕΚ 362/Β/2004). The acts were copied from the registry, not checked against the ΦΕΚ.
•Locally: inside the ports of Lavrio and Kea spearfishing is banned across the WHOLE port water, not merely under the 200 m rule; separately, in front of the hotel beaches (ΓΚΛ Λαυρίου, art. 240, ΦΕΚ 460/Β/1978). The act was copied from the registry, not checked against the ΦΕΚ.
•Coming: two new national marine parks are being created (Ionian + South Cyclades, ~27,500 km²). NOT yet in force (ΠΔ under review, mid-2026). Once live — a trawl ban + a seasonal coastal closure 15.04–31.05; in the strict zones spearfishing will be banned. Check before the season.
⛔ Pinna nobilis (πίννα, fan mussel) — full ban on taking/killing (Habitats Dir. 92/43 Annex IV; critically endangered).
Rules change, and the local Λιμεναρχείο (port authority) may impose local restrictions. Before heading out, check the current rules and the declared archaeological zones (ENALIA).
Can I spearfish on scuba in Cape Sounio?
No. Freediving only: scuba and any air-supply apparatus are banned — they may not even be carried aboard (ΠΔ 373/85, art. 3§2γ). In Cape Sounio the rest of the national frame applies too: 16+, daytime only, ≥200 m from bathers, harbours, moored vessels and marked nets, and a mandatory «Υ.Δ.» buoy you stay within 50 m of. Pneumatic and band guns are allowed; only powerheads are banned.
