plima: The shape of the beach matters far more than any tide: the black pebble falls away in a steep ramp, so even a small wave sets up a hard undertow that drags stones across your legs. The tide itself is a couple of tens of centimetres and changes nothing for hunting. After rain the gully behind the beach washes silt down for a day or two.
zaklon: Emporios bay is cut into the south shore and the whole bulk of the island covers it from the north: the meltemi passes overhead and only what spills over the ridges reaches the water. It opens due south — with a notias or a south-easterly the swell walks into the throat and runs surf up the black pebbles.
uvjeti: A northerly is no obstacle here — come even with a fresh meltemi, at 3–20 m the water stands still. South and south-east cancel the day outright: the beach is steep, the pebble drops away at once, the wave hits that wall with a hard backwash, the entry gets dangerous and silt hangs from bottom to surface.
opasnost: There is a dive centre and a small harbour right here, so keep 300 m off the quay works and any moored boats, and 200 m off swimmers at Mavra Volia — it is an organised beach. The surface buoy is not a luxury: from a boat running along the shore a head in the water is simply invisible. Urchins carpet the black rock.

The species cards list 22 species with real presence in this basin; the strongest here are orada, lubin, hobotnica, kirnja glavulja, kirnja golać i zubatac. Minimum sizes in Greece are NATIONAL, not local: orada 20 cm · lubin 25 cm · kirnja glavulja 45 cm · kirnja golać 45 cm · pagar 18 cm · šarag 23 cm · ovčica 20 cm · hobotnica 750 g. Species with no EU size carry the 150 g floor only. Grouper (Epinephelus) — max 1/day, not banned (ΠΔ 373/85, art. 2§2).

Is spearfishing banned in May in Chios?

Yes. May is a TOTAL spearfishing ban for the whole month, every year, across Greece (ΠΔ 373/1985, art. 3§1α) — so in Chios too. It is law in force, not a draft, and there is no local exemption. Plan June to April.

How many kilos of fish may I keep per day in Chios?

The daily limit is 5 kg, or one trophy heavier than the limit (ΠΔ 373/85, art. 2§2). Grouper (Epinephelus) — max 1/day. Every fish must be at least 150 g (art. 3§2στ), and selling a recreational catch is prohibited (art. 1§7). The limit is national — in Chios it is the same as everywhere in Greece.

Can I spearfish on scuba in Chios?

No. Freediving only: scuba and any air-supply apparatus are banned — they may not even be carried aboard (ΠΔ 373/85, art. 3§2γ). In Chios the rest of the national frame applies too: 16+, daytime only, ≥200 m from bathers, harbours, moored vessels and marked nets, and a mandatory «Υ.Δ.» buoy you stay within 50 m of. Pneumatic and band guns are allowed; only powerheads are banned.
