The level wanders about twenty centimetres here and changes nothing for hunting. What you count are the gaps between the islets: water speeds up in them, and after a few days of meltemi the flow through those gaps is obvious. The shallow sandy basin heats up by August and carries a warm, hazy top layer.

The bay looks east and its mouth is screened by a chain of islets — Glino, Hondro and Koutsomitis break the wave before it ever arrives. The north-west meltemi climbs over the ridge of the eastern wing and hardly touches the water at all. An east or south-east wind, though, walks straight in on you.

This is where you go when the whole island is white with northerly meltemi: the wing of land holds the wind off and the bay stays flat. An east or south-east wind is a reason to turn around — the bottom is shallow and sandy, the wave lifts silt and at fifteen metres you see three.

People and boats are the real risk: the village runs an organised beach, so keep two hundred metres off swimmers and three hundred off jetties and moored craft. The islets at the mouth sit inside a Natura 2000 site — check local restrictions on the spot. Ancient baths ashore, old anchors below: lift nothing.
pristup
Proper asphalt runs here from Chora, about fifteen minutes, and the bus calls several times a day. Park on the Analipsi waterfront and walk in off the sand. Ten minutes' swim gets you to the rocky edges of the bay; for the islets at the mouth take a boat — swimming out is a long haul.

What actually works here is a weak along-shore drift towards the harbour, slowly dragging silt off the sandy bottom of Livadi across to the rocks. The level meanwhile swings ten to thirty centimetres — background, nothing more. In calm after a meltemi run the water at the walls can be noticeably colder than up top.

Both coves sit under the castle rock and open west and south-west. The fortress headland and the ridge behind Livadi shave off the northerly, which is why the height of the meltemi leaves this side the calmest one around. Any southerly or south-westerly swell, however, runs in unhindered right up to the sand.

A northerly is your day: the island covers the coves and along the rocky edges the water is clear. On south or south-west forget it — fifteen metres of depth with sand alongside, and the wave clouds the lot within an hour. After heavy rain the green valley of Livadi sends a brown plume out to sea; give it a day.

This spot carries more legal lines per square metre than any other: the old harbour still works and the Kalymnos ferries come in here, so three hundred metres off the moles and moored ships. Livadi is an organised beach with sunbeds — two hundred metres off swimmers. Divers visit a sunken vessel off Pera Gialos: take nothing.

The easiest entry on the island: twenty-five minutes on foot down from Chora, or park right on the waterfront. The bus serves both Livadi and the harbour. You get in off the sand and swim to the rocky edges of the bay — a couple of hundred metres along the shore, no boat needed.

The tide gives thirty centimetres at most, but in a narrow throat even that shows: water pulls in, then pushes back out, and there is always a light drift at the entrance. Inside the basin a sharp thermocline sets up in summer — around twelve to fifteen metres the water turns cold, and that is where the fish hang.

Vathy is a narrow throat with a basin behind it, walled on every side. It is the one place on the island you can work when the whole Aegean is white: the meltemi whistles overhead while the water inside stays like glass. Only a hard northerly pushes short chop into the throat, and even that dies a hundred metres in.

Wind is barely the problem here — the water is. Exchange through the narrow throat is poor, and after rain the slopes wash silt into the basin where it hangs for two or three days. So check when it last rained rather than the wind forecast; after a dry week visibility deep inside is decent.

The basin is lived in: boats sit on moorings deep inside along with fishing gear — keep three hundred metres off them, and in the narrow throat the caiques pass close, where a buoy is hard to spot. Monk seals use the caves along this north coast, so stay out of them. All of it is Natura 2000: touch nothing, lift nothing.
pristup
It is a bit over twenty kilometres from Chora and the last stretch is dirt track — do not take a low car, and allow an hour each way. Park by the few houses and walk straight in; depth starts at once. For the outer walls and the cave, arrange a caique with the locals in the hamlet.

You can leave the level out of your planning — it is a toy here. The sea's memory decides a lot more: after a southerly blow the surge keeps working the shallows for another day and the murk stays. With settled northerlies, though, surface water is pushed off the coast and cold water rises along the drop — which is why this side clears up during meltemi.

South-west coast: mountain at your back, nothing ahead of you all the way to the horizon. The ridge kills the northerly so thoroughly that at the height of the meltemi it is nearly calm along the rocks. But anything arriving from the south or south-west rolls in without a single obstacle, and then the bay is out completely.

The perfect day here is a hard northerly or north-easterly: the island holds the wind, the water over the reef stands still and you see to the bottom. On southerly swell do not try it even when light — the shore is steep, the exit over rock turns nasty, and at twenty metres it surges and clouds.

Under the cliff at Vatses there is the Negrou cave and boats bring people to it from Chora, so watch for propellers on your run in to shore. Do not go inside the cave alone, it is dark and it surges. A beach with a bar means swimmers: two hundred metres. The coast is wild and help is far — buoy, partner, phone in a dry bag.

Eight or nine kilometres from Chora, but the last part is a beaten-up dirt track and a small car crawls it. Park above the beach and walk down to the sand. The work is not on the beach but round the point to the right: fifteen to twenty minutes along the rocks, or get dropped there by boat from Pera Gialos.

The tide in these waters comes to a few centimetres and gives you nothing to plan around. The water between the islets and over the sand bar, though, picks up real speed. With settled meltemi a steady drift runs across the reef: start into it and come back with it, otherwise you burn yourself out for nothing on the way home.

There is no shelter here in any real sense: bare rock in open water with sea all round. All you can play with is going round the islet and working the lee side under the wall. In fresh wind the channel between Koutsomitis and Kounoupa becomes the problem rather than the refuge.

It is not the site that decides but the crossing: while the run from Pera Gialos or Maltezana is flat you have a great day, but in a fresh northerly it turns into half an hour of pounding and a beat home against the sea. Go only on calm or light-wind days and keep an eye on the afternoon forecast.

Koutsomitis and Kounoupa are named inside a protected Natura 2000 site — ask locally what is allowed and in any case leave the bottom alone. By midday boats full of people are moored here, so hold two hundred metres off swimmers without exception. Open water far from shore: buoy, a partner and a reserve of strength.
pristup
You cannot reach this from land — water only. Regular boats run from Pera Gialos, but with your own gun it is simpler to arrange a private boat out of Maltezana, which is closer. Reckon twenty to thirty minutes of running, and come up to the rocks on the downwind side, which is also where you park.

Setovi: prati nizove valova ≥15 min prije ulaska; Hmax ≈ 2×Hs, zapljuskivanje može ići 50 m dalje od linije pjene. Zatišje >10 min uz period >12 s = veliki set koji «kasni», NE ulazi; uđi odmah nakon što prođe cijeli set i provjeri ponovno u 30. minuti.
Izlaz PRVO: nađi izlaz I rezervni prije ulaska. Na kamenitoj obali ili obali s gromadama porast mrtvog mora od 0,5 m može onemogućiti izlazak — ostati zaglavljen/bez izlaza glavni je ubojica.
Struja na rtu: na izbočenim rtovima često postoji stalna topografska povratna struja, bez obzira na model — lociraj je, ulazi/izlazi s privjetrine, nikad ne plivaj protiv nje.
Hladnoća: neopren prema prikazanoj SST; prvi drhtaj = skok metabolizma i pad apneje → izađi na prvi ustrajni drhtaj. Ispod 15 °C ograniči izlazak na 45–60 min.
Disciplina u solo ronjenju: bova gore; nekome reci lokaciju i vrijeme izlaska; konzervativna apneja (nikad ne forsiraj u hladnoj/mutnoj/uzburkanoj vodi); vidljivost <3 m — ne ulazi.
Poslijepodnevni vjetar: na mnogim obalama vjetar jača od podneva — planiraj izlazak iz vode do podneva; kad se digne kratki val — izlazi.

Astypalaia ima ulaze sa stijena poput Maltezana / Analipsi bay (NE), Vathy fjord (N inlet) i Koutsomitis / Kounoupa islets. A remote "butterfly" island straddling Cyclades↔Dodecanese — very windy and exposed, but pristine, "the bank of the Gods" for fish abundance. The species cards list 22 species with real presence in this basin; the strongest here are kirnja glavulja, kirnja bijela, kirnja pjegava, zubatac, šarag i ušata. Minimum sizes in Greece are NATIONAL, not local: kirnja glavulja 45 cm · kirnja bijela 45 cm · kirnja pjegava 45 cm · šarag 23 cm · konj 25 cm · kirnja golać 45 cm · pagar 18 cm · hobotnica 750 g. Species with no EU size carry the 150 g floor only. Grouper (Epinephelus) — max 1/day, not banned (ΠΔ 373/85, art. 2§2).
Is spearfishing banned in May in Astypalaia?
Yes. May is a TOTAL spearfishing ban for the whole month, every year, across Greece (ΠΔ 373/1985, art. 3§1α) — so in Astypalaia too. It is law in force, not a draft, and there is no local exemption. Plan June to April.
How many kilos of fish may I keep per day in Astypalaia?
The daily limit is 5 kg, or one trophy heavier than the limit (ΠΔ 373/85, art. 2§2). Grouper (Epinephelus) — max 1/day. Every fish must be at least 150 g (art. 3§2στ), and selling a recreational catch is prohibited (art. 1§7). The limit is national — in Astypalaia it is the same as everywhere in Greece.
✓Full ban on taking: Pinna nobilis (πίννα), corals and sponges (ΠΔ 373/85, art. 1§6 + Habitats Directive 92/43).
✓Invasives: taking the lionfish (λεοντόψαρο) is encouraged — ⚠️ venomous spines. The silver-cheeked toadfish (λαγοκέφαλος) ☠️ DO NOT EAT — deadly toxin (TTX), sale banned (Reg. 853/2004, Annex III Sect. VIII Ch. V(E)), it bites. The rabbitfish (γερμανός) is edible — venomous spines.
✓In ANY declared underwater archaeological site, and in the submerged historic sites, spearfishing is BANNED — the act names ψαροντούφεκο in so many words (ΚΥΑ ΥΠΠΟ/ΓΔΑΠΚ/ΑΡΧ/Α1/Φ41/11228/1865, ΦΕΚ 336/Β/2004, part Α §2 δ + part Β). •The national marine parks of Alonissos/N. Sporades and Zakynthos (Laganas): spearfishing is BANNED in the park. But Alonissos zone Β4 is not solid — ΦΕΚ 1741/Β/2011 reopened four stretches inside it (the N shore Αγ. Δημήτριος–Άκρο Απύθμενο, Μηλιά–Σπαρτίνες, όρμος Κλήμα on Περιστέρα, the Μεγάλος Αδελφός shore), while the same act creates the ΕΕΑΧ Περιστέρας, where fishing IS banned. Our layer paints the park whole, i.e. stricter than the act. Check the limits with the park authority.
•The Southern Kynouria/Arcadia diving park: Ν. 4688/2020 establishes underwater parks, but we have not read a spearfishing prohibition inside it in the act — we treat that as NOT PROVEN rather than as confirmed. The park's boundary is not on our map either (the act publishes no coordinates). Ask the Leonidio/Tyros λιμεναρχείο before you go.
•Local bans: on top of the national rules, every port authority issues its own (ΓΚΛ/ΕΚΛ and λιμενάρχης decisions). In the ΛΣ-ΕΛ.ΑΚΤ registry we counted ~163 of them that reach a speargun, across 48 ports — our map does NOT draw them. Check your own port: alieia.hcg.gr/prohibitions/local/local17.php.
•Locally STRICTER than the national rule: Corfu (Kerkyra) — from 01.04 to 31.10 spearfishing is banned within 200 m of the shore, even where nobody is swimming (απόφαση Λ/Χ Κέρκυρας 2141.1/2939/2024, ΦΕΚ Β΄3269/2024). In practice that closes shore entry on Corfu for the season. We read the act in the registry, not in the ΦΕΚ — confirm with the λιμεναρχείο.
•Locally STRICTER: Lefkada — 300 m instead of 200, and not only the speargun: ψαροντούφεκο, nets and longlines are banned within 300 m of those sea areas, beaches and shores of the port district THAT ARE USED BY BATHERS (απόφαση Λ/Χ Λευκάδας 2131.13/1477/2022, in its own words «όπου χρησιμοποιούνται από λουόμενους»). The act ran to 30.09.2022 and we found no extension; an expired act is not proof that the ban is gone. Ask the Lefkada λιμεναρχείο.
•Locally STRICTER: Symi — from 15.06 to 15.09 fishing BY ANY MEANS is banned within 200 m of beach areas and in inhabited coastal areas WHERE BATHERS ARE PRESENT OR GATHER (απόφαση Λ/Χ Σύμης 2131.13/882/2016). Separately, year-round: fishing by any means is banned inside the port and its sea zone, except line/rod fishing from land (ΓΚΛ Σύμης, art. 151, ΦΕΚ 362/Β/2004). The acts were copied from the registry, not checked against the ΦΕΚ.
•Locally: inside the ports of Lavrio and Kea spearfishing is banned across the WHOLE port water, not merely under the 200 m rule; separately, in front of the hotel beaches (ΓΚΛ Λαυρίου, art. 240, ΦΕΚ 460/Β/1978). The act was copied from the registry, not checked against the ΦΕΚ.
•Coming: two new national marine parks are being created (Ionian + South Cyclades, ~27,500 km²). NOT yet in force (ΠΔ under review, mid-2026). Once live — a trawl ban + a seasonal coastal closure 15.04–31.05; in the strict zones spearfishing will be banned. Check before the season.
⛔ Pinna nobilis (πίννα, fan mussel) — full ban on taking/killing (Habitats Dir. 92/43 Annex IV; critically endangered).
Rules change, and the local Λιμεναρχείο (port authority) may impose local restrictions. Before heading out, check the current rules and the declared archaeological zones (ENALIA).
Can I spearfish on scuba in Astypalaia?
No. Freediving only: scuba and any air-supply apparatus are banned — they may not even be carried aboard (ΠΔ 373/85, art. 3§2γ). In Astypalaia the rest of the national frame applies too: 16+, daytime only, ≥200 m from bathers, harbours, moored vessels and marked nets, and a mandatory «Υ.Δ.» buoy you stay within 50 m of. Pneumatic and band guns are allowed; only powerheads are banned.
