prozor: Work the morning: after midday a shifty wind slides down the slope, the bar on Vatses beach opens and people arrive both by road and by sea. June and early autumn are the quietest months. The track is dirt, so you do not want to drive back in the dark — and night hunting in Greece is banned anyway.
plima: You can leave the level out of your planning — it is a toy here. The sea's memory decides a lot more: after a southerly blow the surge keeps working the shallows for another day and the murk stays. With settled northerlies, though, surface water is pushed off the coast and cold water rises along the drop — which is why this side clears up during meltemi.
zaklon: South-west coast: mountain at your back, nothing ahead of you all the way to the horizon. The ridge kills the northerly so thoroughly that at the height of the meltemi it is nearly calm along the rocks. But anything arriving from the south or south-west rolls in without a single obstacle, and then the bay is out completely.
uvjeti: The perfect day here is a hard northerly or north-easterly: the island holds the wind, the water over the reef stands still and you see to the bottom. On southerly swell do not try it even when light — the shore is steep, the exit over rock turns nasty, and at twenty metres it surges and clouds.

prozor: The early hour before the swimmers is the only sensible window, because both beaches get busy. June is still tolerable, then wait for September and October, when Livadi empties out. Watch the Kalymnos ferry timetable and get clear of the harbour side before a ship comes in. Night hunting is banned.
plima: What actually works here is a weak along-shore drift towards the harbour, slowly dragging silt off the sandy bottom of Livadi across to the rocks. The level meanwhile swings ten to thirty centimetres — background, nothing more. In calm after a meltemi run the water at the walls can be noticeably colder than up top.
zaklon: Both coves sit under the castle rock and open west and south-west. The fortress headland and the ridge behind Livadi shave off the northerly, which is why the height of the meltemi leaves this side the calmest one around. Any southerly or south-westerly swell, however, runs in unhindered right up to the sand.
uvjeti: A northerly is your day: the island covers the coves and along the rocky edges the water is clear. On south or south-west forget it — fifteen metres of depth with sand alongside, and the wave clouds the lot within an hour. After heavy rain the green valley of Livadi sends a brown plume out to sea; give it a day.
opasnost: This spot carries more legal lines per square metre than any other: the old harbour still works and the Kalymnos ferries come in here, so three hundred metres off the moles and moored ships. Livadi is an organised beach with sunbeds — two hundred metres off swimmers. Divers visit a sunken vessel off Pera Gialos: take nothing.
pristup: The easiest entry on the island: twenty-five minutes on foot down from Chora, or park right on the waterfront. The bus serves both Livadi and the harbour. You get in off the sand and swim to the rocky edges of the bay — a couple of hundred metres along the shore, no boat needed.

Astypalaia ima ulaze sa stijena poput Maltezana / Analipsi bay (NE), Vathy fjord (N inlet) i Koutsomitis / Kounoupa islets. A remote "butterfly" island straddling Cyclades↔Dodecanese — very windy and exposed, but pristine, "the bank of the Gods" for fish abundance. Which fish can you spear in Astypalaia?

The species cards list 22 species with real presence in this basin; the strongest here are kirnja glavulja, kirnja bijela, kirnja pjegava, zubatac, šarag i ušata. Minimum sizes in Greece are NATIONAL, not local: kirnja glavulja 45 cm · kirnja bijela 45 cm · kirnja pjegava 45 cm · šarag 23 cm · konj 25 cm · kirnja golać 45 cm · pagar 18 cm · hobotnica 750 g. Species with no EU size carry the 150 g floor only. Grouper (Epinephelus) — max 1/day, not banned (ΠΔ 373/85, art. 2§2).

Is spearfishing banned in May in Astypalaia?

Yes. May is a TOTAL spearfishing ban for the whole month, every year, across Greece (ΠΔ 373/1985, art. 3§1α) — so in Astypalaia too. It is law in force, not a draft, and there is no local exemption. Plan June to April.

How many kilos of fish may I keep per day in Astypalaia?

The daily limit is 5 kg, or one trophy heavier than the limit (ΠΔ 373/85, art. 2§2). Grouper (Epinephelus) — max 1/day. Every fish must be at least 150 g (art. 3§2στ), and selling a recreational catch is prohibited (art. 1§7). The limit is national — in Astypalaia it is the same as everywhere in Greece.

Can I spearfish on scuba in Astypalaia?

No. Freediving only: scuba and any air-supply apparatus are banned — they may not even be carried aboard (ΠΔ 373/85, art. 3§2γ). In Astypalaia the rest of the national frame applies too: 16+, daytime only, ≥200 m from bathers, harbours, moored vessels and marked nets, and a mandatory «Υ.Δ.» buoy you stay within 50 m of. Pneumatic and band guns are allowed; only powerheads are banned.
