Get there at first light, before the day breeze builds and before the dive boats arrive — this is a busy site where deep-dive courses are run. June and September–October beat August: warm water, fewer people. The season opens on 1 June, and hunting is banned from sunset to sunrise.

The tide decides nothing here — the level moves ten to forty centimetres and that is not what gets in your way. Watch the flow instead: water speeds up around the corners of the islet, a steady set runs along the south coast after days of meltemi, and by late summer a cold layer settles just past twenty metres.

The islet sits under the southern flank of Naxos, and the bulk of the island with Mount Zas keeps the meltemi off it — on a north wind it stays glassy here. The rock itself splits the swell, so one side is always the quieter one. It is wide open to S and SE.

Come when it blows from the north: the island holds the wind off, the surface stays quiet and at 30–45 m the water is clean. On a south or southwest wind the swell bends around the rock, the top ten metres surge, and sand haze drifts out of Agiassos bay — not worth the trip.
opasnost
The drop runs to 45 m — don't follow a fish down, it is easy to overreach on one breath here. An old anchor lies at nineteen metres with what looks like wreckage beside it: lift nothing off the bottom, that is a criminal matter in Greece. Keep your buoy, give dive boats room, 200 m off the swimmers at Agiassos.
pristup
Boat only. The nearest launch is Agiassos — the road there runs through Agios Arsenios and Sangri and narrows at the end; from the beach the crossing to the rock is short. From Agia Anna, where the dive boats are based, count roughly thirty to forty minutes around the southern tip.

The drive is long, so plan a whole day and leave before light to be in the water at dawn. June is quiet, August brings families onto the beach and boats out of the village, September–October is the calmest stretch. The season opens 1 June; at night, sunset to sunrise, hunting is banned.

What you count are the channels to the Small Cyclades: water pulls constantly between Naxos, Donousa and Koufonisia, and right off the cape you feel the set at once. Against that the level gives ten to forty centimetres and stays out of the calculation. After heavy rain the ravine flushes a muddy freshwater layer that hangs around for a day.
zaklon
The bay looks east with the Zas massif rising behind it, and the mountain really does shave the top off a north wind. Don't expect a clean calm, though: gusts tumble off the ridge and the meltemi still runs down the coast from the north. The bad wind is south and southeast — then the swell walks straight into the bay.

The point of driving out here is a settled meltemi: while the whole west of the island is in whitecaps, the bay lies flat and 0–20 m reads clear. On a southerly, turn around and don't waste the day — the surge pounds the rocks off the cape and lifts sand and weed off the bottom.
opasnost
An old quay stands by the village, the one emery was once loaded from — that is a port structure, so keep 300 m off it and off any moored boats. Moutsouna lives by fishing, so nets and longlines sit along the shore: watch the floats. Families swim on the sandy stretches — 200 m. Help is a long way off.
pristup
About forty kilometres from Chora: through Halki and Filoti to Apeiranthos, then eleven kilometres of hairpins dropping from six hundred and fifty metres to the sea. Asphalt the whole way, but the bends are tight. Park at the harbour, enter over stones, and it is roughly ten minutes on fins along the shore to the cape.

This is the busiest site on the island; through the summer divers hang over the wreck most of the day. Your real chance of quiet work is the first run at dawn, or late September and October when the groups thin out. All of May is closed across Greece, and night is out too.

The level counts for little here — ten to forty centimetres. The Amares reef, though, rises almost to the surface and the water curls around it: a steady stream can run over the wreckage at twenty-four metres while the reef top swirls. By August it is noticeably colder below twenty metres.
zaklon
This is open ground: four kilometres out from the west shore of Naxos, and the only thing above water nearby is the small Amares rocks four hundred metres north. They break the wave for exactly the length of their crest. Whatever comes from the northwest and north arrives here undiminished.
uvjeti
It is not the water that decides here but the surface: at 20–25 m visibility is usually good even after a blow, yet working over the wreckage in a sea is impossible — you get pushed off and slammed against the hull. Go on a calm or a light southerly; under meltemi the boat won't hold and the trip is better postponed.
opasnost
Wreckage means snags: bent steel sticking out, cables and netting wound on the hull. Do not go inside and keep your line short. Lift nothing from the bottom or off the ship — in Greece that goes to court. There is nearly always a dive boat with a flag above the site: give it a wide berth and never surface under a propeller.
pristup
Boat only, no shore anywhere near. Fifteen minutes west out of Agia Anna; the Amares rocks show from the water and serve as your mark, then work it on the sounder. Don't tie onto the wreckage itself — everything catches; sit by the reef and swim across to the point on the surface.
The window is early morning, before the day wind starts and before the pleasure boats spread across the channel. June and the first half of July give calms, October gives warm water and an empty patch of sea. The season starts 1 June, and from sunset to sunrise hunting is banned nationwide.

The level settles nothing here, a couple of dozen centimetres either way. What matters is different: the reef stands on sand, a steady flow runs along its crest once the meltemi has been blowing for days, and by late summer it is noticeably colder below eighteen metres. In a swell the reef top hazes over with sand.
zaklon
There is no shelter on this reef at all: it lies about half a kilometre off the rocky fringe of the Alyko peninsula and nothing stands above water nearby. The Alyko rocks knock down a short easterly chop, but from north and west the place is fully open — under meltemi the surface here goes white.
uvjeti
Go on a flat calm or a light southerly — then the boat sits quietly and at 18–25 m the water is clear. With meltemi from four Beaufort up there is nothing to do: the wave won't let you hold station over the reef, and the danger is the surface, not the depth — you get pushed off and struggle back to the boat.
opasnost
The reef never breaks the surface — it is found on instruments, and you have no landmark up top. Run a big bright buoy: boats cut along this shore at speed and it is all they will see. Twenty-five metres under the keel is no place to work alone, and drift off the reef is noticed too late.
pristup
There is no shore option. Boats leave from Agia Anna, where the dive operation is based — about fifteen minutes to the southwest. Better not to anchor on the reef itself: the bottom grabs and you scatter the fish; drop the hunter and keep the boat moving beside the buoy.
Plan a dawn run: by midday the strait is always fresher than the forecast promised. June and September–October give steadier weather; August brings both wind and boat traffic. The season is open from 1 June, and hunting at night is banned from sunset to sunrise, no exceptions.

The tidal range is ten or twenty centimetres and not worth a thought. The strait current is: water moves between the islands all the time, and inside the reef's passages it speeds up further. Enter with the flow, never against it, or the whole breath goes on fighting the stream.
zaklon
There is nothing to hide behind: the reef sits out in the strait between Naxos and Paros, the nearest land being the Parthena islet some two and a half kilometres east, and it does nothing against a north wind. The strait works like a funnel — the meltemi accelerates in it well beyond what you feel inshore.

You come here only in a quiet window, usually before nine in the morning. Once the strait gets going from the north the wave turns short and mean and the boat cannot hold over the reef. The water itself stays clean, though: 12–25 m over rock, little sand nearby, and almost no haze even after a blow.

The swim-throughs are handsome, but do not go in with a loaded gun: the line catches on a ledge and there is no room to turn in a narrow spot. Second thing is ferries — fast boats run between Paros and Naxos, so your buoy must be visible from far off. Stay clear of the lane and never work alone.
pristup
No walking in — boat only. From Agia Anna it is about twenty minutes to the northwest; from Naxos town it takes longer and you cross the ferry lane. The mark is found by coordinates, there is nothing to line up on the surface, so bring a decent sounder and set the waypoint in advance.

Setovi: prati nizove valova ≥15 min prije ulaska; Hmax ≈ 2×Hs, zapljuskivanje može ići 50 m dalje od linije pjene. Zatišje >10 min uz period >12 s = veliki set koji «kasni», NE ulazi; uđi odmah nakon što prođe cijeli set i provjeri ponovno u 30. minuti.
Izlaz PRVO: nađi izlaz I rezervni prije ulaska. Na kamenitoj obali ili obali s gromadama porast mrtvog mora od 0,5 m može onemogućiti izlazak — ostati zaglavljen/bez izlaza glavni je ubojica.
Struja na rtu: na izbočenim rtovima često postoji stalna topografska povratna struja, bez obzira na model — lociraj je, ulazi/izlazi s privjetrine, nikad ne plivaj protiv nje.
Hladnoća: neopren prema prikazanoj SST; prvi drhtaj = skok metabolizma i pad apneje → izađi na prvi ustrajni drhtaj. Ispod 15 °C ograniči izlazak na 45–60 min.
Disciplina u solo ronjenju: bova gore; nekome reci lokaciju i vrijeme izlaska; konzervativna apneja (nikad ne forsiraj u hladnoj/mutnoj/uzburkanoj vodi); vidljivost <3 m — ne ulazi.
Poslijepodnevni vjetar: na mnogim obalama vjetar jača od podneva — planiraj izlazak iz vode do podneva; kad se digne kratki val — izlazi.

Minimum sizes in Greece are NATIONAL, not local: kirnja glavulja 45 cm · pagar 18 cm · šarag 23 cm · kirnja bijela 45 cm · kirnja pjegava 45 cm · kirnja golać 45 cm · ovčica 20 cm · hobotnica 750 g. Species with no EU size carry the 150 g floor only. Grouper (Epinephelus) — max 1/day, not banned (ΠΔ 373/85, art. 2§2).
Is spearfishing banned in May in Naxos?
Yes. May is a TOTAL spearfishing ban for the whole month, every year, across Greece (ΠΔ 373/1985, art. 3§1α) — so in Naxos too. It is law in force, not a draft, and there is no local exemption. Plan June to April.
How many kilos of fish may I keep per day in Naxos?
The daily limit is 5 kg, or one trophy heavier than the limit (ΠΔ 373/85, art. 2§2). Grouper (Epinephelus) — max 1/day. Every fish must be at least 150 g (art. 3§2στ), and selling a recreational catch is prohibited (art. 1§7). The limit is national — in Naxos it is the same as everywhere in Greece.
✓Full ban on taking: Pinna nobilis (πίννα), corals and sponges (ΠΔ 373/85, art. 1§6 + Habitats Directive 92/43).
✓Invasives: taking the lionfish (λεοντόψαρο) is encouraged — ⚠️ venomous spines. The silver-cheeked toadfish (λαγοκέφαλος) ☠️ DO NOT EAT — deadly toxin (TTX), sale banned (Reg. 853/2004, Annex III Sect. VIII Ch. V(E)), it bites. The rabbitfish (γερμανός) is edible — venomous spines.
✓In ANY declared underwater archaeological site, and in the submerged historic sites, spearfishing is BANNED — the act names ψαροντούφεκο in so many words (ΚΥΑ ΥΠΠΟ/ΓΔΑΠΚ/ΑΡΧ/Α1/Φ41/11228/1865, ΦΕΚ 336/Β/2004, part Α §2 δ + part Β). It reaches the sites our map does not draw, too. Do not touch antiquities (Ν. 3028/2002). Map of the zones — the ENALIA geoportal (thalchor-2.ypen.gov.gr/layers/geonode:ENALIA).
•The national marine parks of Alonissos/N. Sporades and Zakynthos (Laganas): spearfishing is BANNED in the park. But Alonissos zone Β4 is not solid — ΦΕΚ 1741/Β/2011 reopened four stretches inside it (the N shore Αγ. Δημήτριος–Άκρο Απύθμενο, Μηλιά–Σπαρτίνες, όρμος Κλήμα on Περιστέρα, the Μεγάλος Αδελφός shore), while the same act creates the ΕΕΑΧ Περιστέρας, where fishing IS banned. Our layer paints the park whole, i.e. stricter than the act. Check the limits with the park authority.
•The Southern Kynouria/Arcadia diving park: Ν. 4688/2020 establishes underwater parks, but we have not read a spearfishing prohibition inside it in the act — we treat that as NOT PROVEN rather than as confirmed. The park's boundary is not on our map either (the act publishes no coordinates). Ask the Leonidio/Tyros λιμεναρχείο before you go.
•Local bans: on top of the national rules, every port authority issues its own (ΓΚΛ/ΕΚΛ and λιμενάρχης decisions). In the ΛΣ-ΕΛ.ΑΚΤ registry we counted ~163 of them that reach a speargun, across 48 ports — our map does NOT draw them. Check your own port: alieia.hcg.gr/prohibitions/local/local17.php.
•Locally STRICTER than the national rule: Corfu (Kerkyra) — from 01.04 to 31.10 spearfishing is banned within 200 m of the shore, even where nobody is swimming (απόφαση Λ/Χ Κέρκυρας 2141.1/2939/2024, ΦΕΚ Β΄3269/2024). In practice that closes shore entry on Corfu for the season. We read the act in the registry, not in the ΦΕΚ — confirm with the λιμεναρχείο.
•Locally STRICTER: Lefkada — 300 m instead of 200, and not only the speargun: ψαροντούφεκο, nets and longlines are banned within 300 m of those sea areas, beaches and shores of the port district THAT ARE USED BY BATHERS (απόφαση Λ/Χ Λευκάδας 2131.13/1477/2022, in its own words «όπου χρησιμοποιούνται από λουόμενους»). The act ran to 30.09.2022 and we found no extension; an expired act is not proof that the ban is gone. Ask the Lefkada λιμεναρχείο.
•Locally STRICTER: Symi — from 15.06 to 15.09 fishing BY ANY MEANS is banned within 200 m of beach areas and in inhabited coastal areas WHERE BATHERS ARE PRESENT OR GATHER (απόφαση Λ/Χ Σύμης 2131.13/882/2016). Separately, year-round: fishing by any means is banned inside the port and its sea zone, except line/rod fishing from land (ΓΚΛ Σύμης, art. 151, ΦΕΚ 362/Β/2004). The acts were copied from the registry, not checked against the ΦΕΚ.
•Locally: inside the ports of Lavrio and Kea spearfishing is banned across the WHOLE port water, not merely under the 200 m rule; separately, in front of the hotel beaches (ΓΚΛ Λαυρίου, art. 240, ΦΕΚ 460/Β/1978). The act was copied from the registry, not checked against the ΦΕΚ.
•Coming: two new national marine parks are being created (Ionian + South Cyclades, ~27,500 km²). NOT yet in force (ΠΔ under review, mid-2026). Once live — a trawl ban + a seasonal coastal closure 15.04–31.05; in the strict zones spearfishing will be banned. Check before the season.
⛔ Pinna nobilis (πίννα, fan mussel) — full ban on taking/killing (Habitats Dir. 92/43 Annex IV; critically endangered).
Rules change, and the local Λιμεναρχείο (port authority) may impose local restrictions. Before heading out, check the current rules and the declared archaeological zones (ENALIA).
Can I spearfish on scuba in Naxos?
No. Freediving only: scuba and any air-supply apparatus are banned — they may not even be carried aboard (ΠΔ 373/85, art. 3§2γ). In Naxos the rest of the national frame applies too: 16+, daytime only, ≥200 m from bathers, harbours, moored vessels and marked nets, and a mandatory «Υ.Δ.» buoy you stay within 50 m of. Pneumatic and band guns are allowed; only powerheads are banned.
