The verdict comes from seven water factors and hard safety gates — not ten tabs. Go or stay.

How we score the water

Our own model

Our own forecast engine — not a third-party widget. It weighs these water factors into one go-or-stay verdict for this coast; the 0–10 dial is that verdict, read out as a number.

01
Swell & wave memory
Height, period and direction of the swell, plus the wake of recent storms — an old storm still stirs the water, and the engine remembers.
02
Wind & gusts
Speed and gusts, hour by hour — wind speed and an onshore push chop the surface and cut visibility.
03
Tide phase
Timing and range of the tide, calibrated per coast — big spring tides pull the verdict toward caution.
04
Water temperature
Sea-surface temperature — sharply cold water vetoes a green verdict.
05
Currents & outflow
Direction and drift of the current — it pushes you, and it drags turbid coastal water across where you dive.
06
Rain runoff & air clarity
Rain muddies the water inshore through land runoff, while fog and haze cut visibility at the surface.
07
Coast shape & exposure
How the coast faces the swell — a sheltered cove keeps the water clean; an exposed, head-on point takes a penalty.

Safety gates

  • Thunderstorm forecast — an instant red, no exceptions.
  • An official warning (MeteoAlarm / IPMA) — yellow, or red for the higher ranks.
  • Missing input data — a would-be green is capped to yellow rather than overstated.
  • Strong disagreement between forecast models — a green day is pulled back to yellow.
  • Night hours — where night spearfishing is banned by law the window is forced red; where it is legal (Australia outside NSW, New Zealand, South Africa) it is capped at yellow, never green.

It all folds into a single 0–10 score and one verdict: go or stay.

A forecast, not a guarantee — the sea has the last word.

The water column

Visibility and what drives it — post-storm clearing, river plume, temperature and the thermocline.

What it is

A marine instrument,
go / no-go for solo hunting.

spearo.app folds wind, wave, swell period, visibility, tides, water temperature and risk into a single verdict — go to the spot or not. It computes 7 days ahead from open marine models (Open-Meteo, IPMA), with no sign-up and no accounts. Built for solo spearfishing off the rocks, where any mistake costs dearly.

Now live: 1391 spots across 205 stretches of coast — mainland Portugal, Madeira and the Azores.

Cabo CopeÁguilas

window
Dawn sets the plan: on 15 June first light is at 06:33, on 15 August at 07:11, and by mid-October only at 08:02. Water runs 18.5 °C in May, 23.9 in July, 25.1 in August — the yearly peak — and 21.2 in October. Night spearfishing is banned across Spain, from sunset to sunrise, so build the trip around first light.
tide
Tides in Murcia move 10–20 centimetres — they change nothing here, so forget the tables. What matters is the water wrapping around the peninsula: when you switch from one side to the other, the flow turns with you. After several days of steady wind an alongshore drift sets in — check your drift against the buoy.
shelter
The 242-metre Cabo Cope peninsula works as a real wind screen, and the two sides swap over properly. On the poniente, western side sits the village of Calabardina; on the levante, eastern side lies Ensenada de la Fuente with the Torre de Cope. With Levante you go west, with Poniente or Lebeche you cross east.
conditions
With Levante, work the Calabardina side — the hill blocks the wind completely. If it backs to Poniente or Lebeche, round the cape and drop into Ensenada de la Fuente. The shore is rock, with no sand outwash and no rambla feeding the cape, so the water stays clean: the zone reference is about 15 metres, more in flat calm.
hazard
The cape is ANSE private land: the conservation group bought 270 hectares here in 2020, and land access can be restricted. The RMIP Cabo Cope draft decree is out for public consultation at the CARM in 2026 — we found no ban in force, but the status can change within the season, so check before you drive out.
access
Tarmac runs as far as Calabardina and the hamlet of Cope; no 4×4 needed. Beyond that it is dirt tracks and footpaths around the peninsula: you drop into Ensenada de la Fuente from the Torre de Cope, and reach the southern side past Punta del Peñón de Santa María. Nobody has timed the walks — allow spare time, and wear boots for the urchins.

Rocky cape to the north; deep drop-offs, grouper and dentex, very exposed to the E-SE.

Cabo CopeÁguilas
borderline
exposed head-on to the swell today (city-level)
window
In summer the boats of the two Calabardina dive centres, Almadraba and Estela, reach «La Fuente» from about 09:30 — before that the spot is yours. In July and August the thermocline sits around 15 metres (measured over at Cabo de Palos; no separate figure for Águilas). Water is 14.5 °C in February, 16.4 in December.
tide
Tidal range in Murcia is 10–20 centimetres and out on the tip it means nothing at all. What means something is the water wrapping the rock: divers here describe «corriente ocasional» — not a permanent current, but it shows up, and it is born right at the end of the cape and further offshore.
shelter
You are right on the tip, by Punta del Caballo, and there is no shelter at all: from south and southwest it is open sea to the horizon. The hill behind your back only cuts the northern quadrant. Lebeche is the one wind that gets through Sierra del Cantar to Águilas, and it slams straight into this rock.
conditions
Come in flat calm or with N/NE, an offshore wind that lays the water down against the wall. With Lebeche from the southwest, stay away: the swell arrives head-on and there are almost no exits along the cliff. On a good day schools of lechas (Seriola dumerili), barracuda, damselfish and octopus work the rock; grouper too, minimum size 45 cm.
hazard
Off the tip you get 30-plus metres right against the shore: the «La Fuente» dive in front of the promontory is 30–32 metres, advanced level, and further out lie «Los pecios de Cabo Cope», the sunken ships. Scuba and any breathing gear are banned for spearfishing in Spain — those metres are breath-hold only.
access
You are better off entering from the water: on land the edge of the tip is sheer and the paths simply stop, so people start at Calabardina and swim along the rocks to Punta del Caballo. A buoy is compulsory, and in Murcia it must fly the Alpha flag — the only region that demands it — and you stay within 25 metres of it.

Volcanic cape in the Cabo Cope park; deep rock and wrecks with dentex and amberjack, very exposed.

In summer this is a holiday village: the beach fills up, boats leave the harbour and the two dive centres shuttle groups out. From shore it is worth working before 09:00, or simply out of season — in October the water is still 21.2 °C and the crowds are gone. Night hunting is banned in Spain, sunset to sunrise.
tide
Sea level moves a hand's width here and decides nothing. Inside the bay the water is nearly still: divers describe the through-cave Cueva de la Virgen as «sencilla y casi sin corrientes». A gentle alongshore drag only shows up after several days of the same wind, and closer to the cape rather than in the bay.
shelter
The village sits on the poniente, western side of Cabo Cope, and the bay looks roughly W/SW. Shelter from Levante is excellent — the cape covers it entirely, and on easterly days half the region turns up here. With Poniente the bay starts to move, and with Lebeche the swell walks straight in.
conditions
Your good day here is easterly: with Levante the bay goes glassy. With Poniente you can still work along the rocks; with Lebeche you cannot. The bottom off the beach is sand, so after a southwesterly swell the murk hangs around and you see a couple of metres inshore. Move along the rocks toward the cape and it clears up noticeably.
hazard
The cave goes right through and divers use it often — do not enter with a loaded gun and do not block their exit. Boat traffic from the harbour is heavy, so a buoy with the Alpha flag is non-negotiable. Keep 250 metres from beaches with swimmers and 200 from fishing gear. A loaded gun out of the water is illegal, and selling your catch is too.
access
The easiest access in the whole Cope area: about 10 kilometres of tarmac from Águilas and parking in the village itself. You enter either off the sand at Playa de Calabardina or off the rocks toward the cape, where the urchins are — boots required. The Murcia spearfishing licence is separate, 18+, with a medical certificate and insurance.

Village bay at the foot of Cabo Cope, with rock edges and seagrass; clear sheltered water.

Google Maps
CalarreonaÁguilas
borderline
exposed head-on to the swell today (city-level)
window
This is a family beach: in July and August there are children from 10:00, and the 250 m rule around bathers eats the spot by day. Work the hour before and after first light, or come in October with the water still at 21,2 °C. It drops to 16,4 °C in December and 14,5 °C in February, and then the cove is all yours.
tide
Tide, at 10–20 cm, is not a factor. What you count here is the surf: after a settled southerly a weak drift runs west along the shore, and everything the beach lifts goes that way. Real current only shows up offshore at La Losa, where it is over 30 m deep and the flow is described as random.
shelter
This is the eastern cove itself, not the group of four: Calarreona beach with its hamlet above it, and Cala de las Tortugas and Cala Mijo next door. Punta Parda screens it from the south-west better than the other three, so you can still work here in a moderate Lebeche, when Los Cocedores is already useless.
conditions
The entry is sand with scattered volcanic rock and the bottom is shallow and easy: you can get in almost any day with no surf. But sand is sand — any wave lifts murk and visibility drops here sooner than on the rocky sides next door. After two settled days in a row the water stands and you see well.
hazard
The legal cover here is murky: the Parque Regional Cabo Cope – Puntas de Calnegre was declared by Ley 4/1992, and in thirty-three years its PORN has still not been approved; we found no prohibiting act, which is not permission. Keep 200 m off professional gear and aquaculture cages, stay out of the Águilas port channel, and never sell the catch.
access
From Águilas it is about 5 km along the coast road, with parking by the Calarreona hamlet and entry straight off the sand — the easiest access of the four coves. You do not walk the beach with a loaded gun: loading out of the water is banned. La Losa offshore is interesting, but it is past 30 m and not a swim from the beach.

Sheltered cove north of Águilas with a sandy entry and scattered volcanic rock; easy shallow bottom.

Google Maps
Cuatro Calas (Calarreona)Águilas
borderline
exposed head-on to the swell today (city-level)
window
In July and August this is the busiest spot in Águilas: swimmers from 10:00 and car parks full by midday. It only works at first light — sunrise is 07:11 on 15 August — or out of season. The water is 18,5 °C in May and 21,2 °C in October, and in autumn the place empties out. Late summer brings Cotylorhiza jellyfish.
tide
The level moves 10–20 cm, so tide counts for nothing here. What counts: La Losa offshore is described as a 30–34 m dive with random currents, meaning the flow out there cannot be predicted. Inside the coves there is no current, but after a gota fría the ramblas spit silt and stain the water along the whole face.
shelter
Treat it as one face made of four coves: east to west, Calarreona, La Higuerica, La Carolina and Los Cocedores. The shore runs north-east to south-west and looks south-east and south. The Sierra del Cantar blocks Levante and north outright, Poniente barely reaches, but Lebeche comes straight in — the most exposed stretch to it in Murcia.
conditions
Come with Levante or a northerly: on a calm day you see plenty here. With a south-westerly swell it clouds over within hours — sand plus the wash off the alluvial fan. Eastern Calarreona holds on longest, screened by Punta Parda; Los Cocedores in the west goes first. Offshore, La Losa averages 15 m of visibility.
hazard
By day in season the problem is snorkellers: keep 250 m from beaches with bathers or the shot is illegal. Loose rock escarpments hang over La Carolina and Los Cocedores and stones come down — do not park or rest at the foot of the wall. A buoy is mandatory and must fly the Alfa flag; Murcia is the only region that spells that out.
access
You turn off the N-332, the coast road from Águilas to Almería; there are proper car parks, no 4×4 needed, and some approaches are dirt. All four coves are stitched together by the SL-MU-18 path, a loop of about 2.5 hours starting at Matalentisco or at Calarreona. The last drops to the water are stairs and tracks over rock.

Rocky coves SW of Águilas; mixed bottom, moderately exposed to the S.

Google Maps
Isla del FraileÁguilas
borderline
exposed head-on to the swell today (city-level)
window
Dive boats reach the island from about 09:30 and moor at 5–8 m, so get in before them. Sunrise is 06:33 on 15 June and 07:11 on 15 August. Seahorses hold here all year, while barracuda schools and mero come and go with the season. Night is banned, sunset to sunrise, and the Murcian spearfishing licence is separate, from 18 only.
tide
In Murcia the tide moves 10–20 cm, so forget it. Around the island there is effectively no current; it begins once you are outside, past the outer edge. The narrow channel between island and shore is the exception: with any wave the water slams and shoves through it, the one place you feel flow close in.
shelter
The island gives you shelter in any wind — you just pick the side. La Cresta, the western ridge, sits in the lee of Levante and holds the best posidonia around here. Pared Sur faces south and suffers from both Levante and southern swell, so it is a flat-calm option only. El Mogote is covered from Lebeche and Poniente.
conditions
The water round the island is clear and there is almost no current — it starts further offshore. The zone benchmark is about 15 m of visibility, more on a flat day, with a mean temperature of 20 °C. From 1–3 m at the wall you drop to 30 m over sand; that depth tempts a tank, but scuba and any breathing gear are banned for spearfishing in Spain.
hazard
The island, Punta del Cigarro and at least 100 m of seabed around them are listed BIC as a historic site under Decreto 37/2013: the text bans no fishing, but lift nothing off the bottom and landing on the island is regulated. The official CARM map also draws a closed polygon matching the island, with no legal basis we could identify — check before you go.
access
From Águilas you head for El Hornillo: tarmac, then a dirt track, no 4×4 needed. After that you follow the coast path. The channel between island and mainland is about 13 m at its narrowest, at the north-east corner — not a swim, a step across, though it slams through there with any wave. Wear boots, the rock is full of urchins.

Rocky ground facing Fraile island; rock drop-offs, sea bream and gilthead, exposed to the SE.

Roquedo de Poniente (La Carolina)Águilas
borderline
exposed head-on to the swell today (city-level)
window
It is a shallow spot and warms early: 18,5 °C already in May and 23,9 °C in July. In summer the thermocline sits around 15 m, but here you never reach it. The best window is first light in May and June, and the whole of October with the water at 21,2 °C and the beach empty. Night is banned, sunset to sunrise, no exceptions.
tide
The tidal range is 10–20 cm and you ignore it. What rules here is the weather ashore: after a gota fría downpour the ramblas dump silt into the sea and the water stains for kilometres, sometimes for days. On a bottom this shallow the ordinary surf is enough to stir up murk, no rain needed. Current, at that depth, there is none.
shelter
The name is local: it turns up in neither OSM, nor Wikiloc, nor Nominatim. Everything points to the rock shoulder on the western, poniente side of Playa de la Carolina. If the side is west, it stands open to Lebeche and southern swell and works with an easterly or north-easterly, when the wave is pinned to the far side of the bay.
conditions
Come with an east or north-east wind: the shoulder then sits in the lee and the shallow water stays clean. With a south-westerly it is the other way round — sand and washed-in sediment drop visibility to 2–3 m and there is nothing to do here. Mixed shallow bottom, loose rock over sand: this is where you take a beginner.
hazard
First thing, do not drive to the wrong place: 1,3 km to the south-west there is a second Playa la Carolina with the same name. The escarpment over the cove crumbles, so do not stand under the wall. Around it lies the Paisaje Protegido Cuatro Calas, but we could not identify its declaring act: we found no prohibiting act, which is not the same as permission.
access
Leave the car in the lower car park of La Carolina beach; from there it is a couple of minutes to the water. You get in over rock and sand, in boots — there are urchins on every stone entry. The working shoulder is just west of the beach, three minutes of swimming along the shore. The Murcian licence needs a medical certificate and insurance.

Rocky ends of the Poniente bay; semi-sheltered from the easterly, good for beginners.

  • ✓Spearfishing catch may not be sold or traded — it is non-commercial fishing ().
  • ✓Night prohibited: spearfishing only in daylight (sunset to sunrise not allowed) — , art. 16.d.

  • ✓The state act (, art. 16) bans, for spearfishing: a loaded gun out of the water; explosive/electric points and lamps (hand torches excepted); underwater scooters; night — from sunset to sunrise. Plus art. 12 b), d), e): 300 m from professional fishing vessels, light as an attractant, poisons/explosives. A ban in a PARTICULAR reserve, port or beach comes from that place's OWN instrument (the reserve's order, the autonomous community's rules, the port authority) — see the no-take zones on the map and your community's rules.
  • ✓Min. sizes by ( + + EU 2019/1241): sea bass 42 cm (rec.) / 36 cm / 25 cm Mediterranean / 22 cm Canaries; gilthead bream 20 cm and white seabream 23 cm in the Mediterranean (EU 2019/1241); grouper 45 cm. See your zone's species card.
  • ✓Only species in Annex I of may be taken; keeping, landing or transporting undersized specimens is prohibited.
  • ✓The licence needs a medical fitness certificate for free-diving and civil-liability insurance (or a federative licence, which includes it). Mandatory in the Basque Country/Murcia/Asturias/Galicia; the federative licence covers it in Galicia/Balearics/Cantabria; the Canaries and Andalusia do NOT require it for the individual licence (a responsible health declaration). Minimum age generally 16 (14 in Andalusia).
Safety protocol
  • Sets: watch the wave trains ≥15 min before entering; Hmax ≈ 2×Hs, the wash can run 50 m past the foam line. A lull >10 min with period >12 s = a big set «overdue», do NOT enter; enter right after a full set passes and re-check at minute 30.
  • Exit FIRST: find your exit AND a backup before entering. On a rocky/boulder shore a 0.5 m rise in swell can make the exit impossible — getting pinned/unable to climb out is the main killer.
  • Headland rip: prominent points often have a permanent topographic rip regardless of the model — locate it, enter/exit on the windward side, never swim against it.
  • Cold: wetsuit per the SST chip; the first shiver = a metabolic surge and a drop in breath-hold → get out at the first steady shiver. Cap the session at 45–60 min below 15 °C.
  • Solo discipline: buoy up; tell someone the spot and exit time; conservative breath-hold (never push it in cold/murky/surfy water); visibility <3 m — don't enter.
  • Afternoon wind: on many coasts the wind builds from midday — plan to be out of the water by midday; the chop builds — get out.
  • UV 11:00–15:00 (UVI ≥6): sunscreen and cover up on the surface interval.
  • Solo is a fundamental risk (hypoxic blackout with no buddy). Any doubt = No-go.

Spearfishing in Águilas: spots, seasons and rules

Updated 2026-07-09 · By Oleksandr, spearfisher

Spearfishing in Águilas runs through rocky coves, volcanic ground and Cabo Cope. Isla del Fraile has rock drop-offs with sea bream and gilthead. Cuatro Calas has mixed bottom SW of town. Cabo Cope is very exposed, with dentex, grouper and amberjack. The source does not name meagre for Águilas. Murcia processes the spearfishing license separately at CARM; national rules require freediving, daylight, buoy and Mediterranean sizes.

  • ✓There is no fixed national catch cap (, art. 5 delegates it to the communities); the standard is 5 kg/person/day, with 1 specimen allowed not to count (Canaries — Decreto 182/2004, art. 38.3; Murcia; Galicia; Basque Country). Protected species have per-piece quotas.
  • ✓Only a harpoon is allowed — hand-held or mechanically propelled, with one or several points (, art. 14.1). Carrying spearfishing gear and underwater breathing equipment aboard AT THE SAME TIME is prohibited (art. 14.2) — an offence in itself, even if you dived on a breath hold.
  • ✓Spain is not one jurisdiction. The licence is issued by a coastal autonomous community, and you must comply with the rules of the administration on whose littoral you are in the water: «debiendo cumplir la normativa establecida por la administración en cuyo litoral se realice la actividad» (, art. 13). Interior waters — inside the straight baselines: bays, coves, rías, the whole coastal strip — are the community's competence; exterior waters are the State's. So the age, the days of the week, the distances and the are found in your community's act, not in the state one.
  • •Murcia: Law 2/2007; the spearfishing licence is processed separately at the CARM. Confirm the exact procedure page at carm.es.
  • ✓Bans: RMIP Cabo de Palos–Islas Hormigas and Cabo Tiñoso — spearfishing banned (see zones).
  • ✓Murcia (Decreto 72/2016, internal waters): the spearfishing licence requires being of FULL AGE — 18 (art. 11.2.a; the surface licence is 14, art. 7.2) — a medical certificate of physical fitness for spearfishing specifically, and accident + third-party liability insurance covering the whole licence period; it lasts 1 year (art. 11.2–3). Only a harpoon is allowed, hand-held or mechanically propelled, with one or several points (art. 12). A clearly visible buoy with the Alfa flag is mandatory and you may not go more than 25 m from it (art. 13). Prohibited: carrying spearfishing gear and underwater breathing equipment aboard at the same time, spearfishing within 250 m of beaches used by bathers, night — sunset to sunrise, a loaded gun out of the water, any autonomous or semi-autonomous diving equipment, explosive/electric points and lamps (hand torches excepted) and underwater scooters (art. 14). General bans: no invertebrates other than the cephalopods of the state decree's Annex I (art. 5.c); 200 m from professional set gear, aquaculture polygons and fishing vessels (art. 5.i); no recreational fishing at all in marine reserves and in navigable and port-access channels (art. 5.k).
