Go at dawn, before the boats leave Cala Gamba and Portitxol and before the embat. Important legal note: the Badia de Palma marine reserve is one of only two places on Mallorca where spearfishing may be permitted, with individual authorisation and only on Saturdays, Sundays, holidays and two weekdays fixed by resolution. Check whether your entry falls inside.
tide
Astronomical tide here is token, a couple of fingers of range, and it neither uncovers nor covers anything on the quay steps. What you do notice is the water sloshing inside the Portitxol basin when pressure changes or a southerly sets in, plus a level push during storms. The swell rules here; the tide does not.
shelter
You are on the north shore of the bay, looking south-south-west with the city and the airport at your back: under Tramuntana or Mestral the water stands still, almost swimming-pool calm. The bad sector is 150–260°: the 220 Llebeig raises a short chop inside the bay itself, and the breakwater edge fills with foam.
conditions
This is city water: over the sand and the posidonia patches you see reasonably well in calm, but never like on an open cape. What clouds it is rain with urban runoff, silt stirred by propellers around the moorings, and short south-west chop. After two days of Tramuntana and no recent rain the bottom reads comfortably.

    hazard
    The risk here is traffic: constant coming and going from the moorings, jet skis, and the boat route that skirts the urban shore. Keep a clearly visible buoy, always within 25 m, and respect the 300 m from professional vessels at work. Add bathers all along the shore and lost hooks among the stones of the promenade.
    access
    One of the easiest spots on the island: park in the Portitxol streets or beside Cala Gamba and get in from a slipway or the seawall steps, with two paces of shallow water. The bottom drops away gradually among blocks, sand and weed. Do not cross the marina entrances or use them to get out, even if they look closer.

    Dawn, no argument: until the embat starts the sea is glassy and the point is comfortable to work; with the midday breeze the ripple and glare spoil the hunting. Good season from May to October, though in August Camp de Mar and Cala Fornells fill up with swimmers and jet skis. Daylight only, between sunrise and sunset.
    tide
    Tidal range is effectively nil, barely a hand's width at springs, so do not plan the session around a table. It is the wind that changes the level: a sustained Llebeig heaps water into the Camp de Mar bay and lifts the sea a few centimetres, and out on the point what you feel is wave surge, not any tidal flow.
    shelter
    Andritxol point, with its old watchtower on top, splits Camp de Mar from Cala Fornells and gives you two faces: under north and north-east wind the sierra shields it and both sides work. Under Llebeig or Migjorn, 200 to 240 degrees, the south-west face takes it full on and you retreat inside Camp de Mar.
    conditions
    This is one of the clearer corners of the south-west: on a quiet day you see a long way over rock and meadow, and the water only goes milky with heavy rain, when the Andratx and Peguera torrents dump silt. After a south-westerly blow it takes its time to settle. Light 200–240 wind is still fine; from force four up, forget it.
    hazard
    This corner of the island is ringed by closed water: the Santa Ponça bay ZPP and the Illes del Ponent reserve lie about five kilometres away, sa Dragonera about six and a half. If you move along the coast by fin or by boat, know exactly where you are. Sizes: grouper 45 cm (50 in reserves), with a cut in the lower tail lobe, dentex 35, scorpionfish 30.
    access
    Easiest is to leave the car at Camp de Mar and take the coast path climbing toward the Andritxol tower, then drop onto the rock on whichever side is in the lee. You can also start from Cala Fornells when it blows south-west. The swim to the point is short but along open coast, and getting out over smooth rock gets awkward with half a metre of sea.

    A June-to-October place, and always at first light, with the sea asleep and before the embat wrinkles the surface; by midday the glare against the wall makes it hard to read the bottom. In winter the south hits too often and windows are rare. As everywhere in Spain, sunrise to sunset only — night hunting is forbidden.
    tide
    In the Balearics the tidal step is a matter of centimetres and here, on a vertical wall, it changes absolutely nothing: no slab dries out, no entry closes at low water. What does raise the level is a southerly storm piling water against the coast. Plan by wave height and period, never by a tide timetable.
    shelter
    The Cap Blanc cliff closes the bay on the east side and faces due south, so the whole 150–260° arc reaches it unfiltered; worst is the Migjorn between 200 and 220, which breaks on the wall and throws rebound back at you. Under northerly Tramuntana the wind blows off the land and the water goes flat, though gusts drop hard from above.
    conditions
    The water here is deep blue: with no torrent and no fine sand nearby, visibility holds well and in summer you see a very long way over the drop-off rock. What ruins it is wave rebound off the cliff, which fills the first band with bubbles and particles. If there is more than half a metre of southerly sea, this place is simply not an option.
    hazard
    A tall wall with no exits: if you tire or the sea turns, there is nowhere to climb out for kilometres, and the rebound off the rock wears you down fast. Mind the legal frame too: Cap Blanc sits between the Badia de Palma and Migjorn de Mallorca reserves, the only two places where spearfishing can be authorised at all, and only with an individual permit.
    access
    There is no way down by land: the Cap Blanc cliff edge offers no practicable ramp. The normal move is to start from the Cala Pi inlet, with its stairway and narrow channel, and fin toward the cape, or come by boat from s'Estanyol. Either way, plan the return with margin: there is no intermediate exit and the Cala Pi channel fills with backwash.

    The good window is first light: in summer the embat, the thermal sea breeze, gets up around midday and the mirror turns to ripple after that. From May to October the water is warm, but the coves are packed with anchored boats and water taxis. National law closes the night — sunrise to sunset only.
    tide
    Tide here is measured in centimetres: about a quarter of a metre at springs, so the table decides nothing. What moves the water is wind set-up — a steady southerly lifts the level by tens of centimetres and pushes surge into the sandstone coves — plus the odd seiche in the corner. Read the swell, not the tide hour.
    shelter
    The cape closes the south-west corner of the Bay of Palma, so under northerlies (Tramuntana, Gregal) the water here sits flat, with the whole island acting as a screen. What ruins it is the 150–260° sector, above all the Llebeig at 220°: it arrives off open sea with nothing to stop it and piles swell onto the points.
    conditions
    In calm the visibility over sand and meadow runs to fifteen or twenty metres, and on the cape's rock it is usually better still. What kills it is the backwash: a day of Llebeig lifts the sand out of the Portals Vells coves and you need one or two days of margin. With southerly swell running it is simply not worth the drive.
    hazard
    Take this seriously: the Illes del Ponent marine reserve (el Toro, les Malgrats and el Sec) starts right here, and spearfishing is banned inside it. The line runs a few metres off the point and nothing marks it from the water — check the map before you get in. Add heavy summer boat traffic: buoy compulsory, never more than 25 m from it.
    access
    You park in the Portals Vells cove itself, at the end of the dirt track, and walk in over the sand; the cape is closed off by land, so do not try to scramble down there. From the water you head south-west past the sandstone caves. Remember the Ponent reserve line begins right at that point: if you are unsure where you are, stay inside the cove.

    • ✓Spearfishing licence mandatory; the AUTONOMOUS COMMUNITY issues it (not the State) and it is valid in the exterior waters of the whole coast. Free-diving only — scuba is banned (, art. 3).
    • ✓Spearfishing catch may not be sold or traded — it is non-commercial fishing ().
    • ✓Night prohibited: spearfishing only in daylight (sunset to sunrise not allowed) — , art. 16.d.
    • ✓Marker buoy MANDATORY: mark your position with a clearly visible buoy and stay within 25 m of it — , art. 15.
    • ✓Never keep the speargun loaded out of the water — , art. 16.a.
    • ✓Keep at least 300 m from professional fishing vessels that are working — , art. 12.b.
    • ✓The state act (, art. 16) bans, for spearfishing: a loaded gun out of the water; explosive/electric points and lamps (hand torches excepted); underwater scooters; night — from sunset to sunrise. Plus art. 12 b), d), e): 300 m from professional fishing vessels, light as an attractant, poisons/explosives. A ban in a PARTICULAR reserve, port or beach comes from that place's OWN instrument (the reserve's order, the autonomous community's rules, the port authority) — see the no-take zones on the map and your community's rules.
    • ✓Min. sizes by ( + + EU 2019/1241): sea bass 42 cm (rec.) / 36 cm / 25 cm Mediterranean / 22 cm Canaries; gilthead bream 20 cm and white seabream 23 cm in the Mediterranean (EU 2019/1241); grouper 45 cm. See your zone's species card.
    • ✓Only species in Annex I of may be taken; keeping, landing or transporting undersized specimens is prohibited.
    • ✓The licence needs a medical fitness certificate for free-diving and civil-liability insurance (or a federative licence, which includes it). Mandatory in the Basque Country/Murcia/Asturias/Galicia; the federative licence covers it in Galicia/Balearics/Cantabria; the Canaries and Andalusia do NOT require it for the individual licence (a responsible health declaration). Minimum age generally 16 (14 in Andalusia).
    • ✓There is no fixed national catch cap (, art. 5 delegates it to the communities); the standard is 5 kg/person/day, with 1 specimen allowed not to count (Canaries — Decreto 182/2004, art. 38.3; Murcia; Galicia; Basque Country). Protected species have per-piece quotas.
    • ✓Only a harpoon is allowed — hand-held or mechanically propelled, with one or several points (, art. 14.1). Carrying spearfishing gear and underwater breathing equipment aboard AT THE SAME TIME is prohibited (art. 14.2) — an offence in itself, even if you dived on a breath hold.
    • ✓Spain is not one jurisdiction. The licence is issued by a coastal autonomous community, and you must comply with the rules of the administration on whose littoral you are in the water: «debiendo cumplir la normativa establecida por la administración en cuyo litoral se realice la actividad» (, art. 13). Interior waters — inside the straight baselines: bays, coves, rías, the whole coastal strip — are the community's competence; exterior waters are the State's. So the age, the days of the week, the distances and the are found in your community's act, not in the state one.
    • ✓Balearic Islands: the spearfishing licence is issued by the Govern (CAIB). Key rule: spearfishing is BANNED in the marine reserves, EXCEPT in Badia de Palma, Migjorn de Mallorca and Llevant de Mallorca (there, with a licence).
    • ✓Balearics: grouper/anfós — 45 cm in interior waters, 50 cm in marine reserves; mandatory marking (a cut in the lower caudal-fin lobe, spearfishing included) — Decreto 34/2014, art. 12 + Annex 3. The «50 cm in reserves» figure comes from the official DG de Pesca table (Aug 2025).
    • ✓Bans: Toro/Malgrats (Ponent), Freus d'Eivissa-Formentera, northern Menorca, etc.; the state RMIP Llevant de Mallorca–Cala Rajada also bans it (see zones).
    • ✓Balearics: in the marine reserves of the interior waters spearfishing is NOT allowed. Where the decree makes an exception it takes an individual authorisation from the Direcció General, and only on Saturdays, Sundays, holidays and two weekdays a week set by resolution (Decret 41/2015, art. 6). Which reserves are excepted — see the no-take zones on the map and each reserve's own decree.
    • ⛔ Seahorses (Hippocampus) — protected (RPE).

    Rules change and are REGIONAL. Before heading out, check with the competent autonomous community (licence) and the min-size table in force.

    Safety protocol
    • Sets: watch the wave trains ≥15 min before entering; Hmax ≈ 2×Hs, the wash can run 50 m past the foam line. A lull >10 min with period >12 s = a big set «overdue», do NOT enter; enter right after a full set passes and re-check at minute 30.
    • Exit FIRST: find your exit AND a backup before entering. On a rocky/boulder shore a 0.5 m rise in swell can make the exit impossible — getting pinned/unable to climb out is the main killer.
    • Headland rip: prominent points often have a permanent topographic rip regardless of the model — locate it, enter/exit on the windward side, never swim against it.
    • Cold: wetsuit per the SST chip; the first shiver = a metabolic surge and a drop in breath-hold → get out at the first steady shiver. Cap the session at 45–60 min below 15 °C.
    • Solo discipline: buoy up; tell someone the spot and exit time; conservative breath-hold (never push it in cold/murky/surfy water); visibility <3 m — don't enter.
    • Afternoon wind: on many coasts the wind builds from midday — plan to be out of the water by midday; the chop builds — get out.
    • UV 11:00–15:00 (UVI ≥6): sunscreen and cover up on the surface interval.
    • Solo is a fundamental risk (hypoxic blackout with no buddy). Any doubt = No-go.
