As everywhere in Valencia, the window runs from sunrise to nine: the ordinance only allows fishing by bathing zones from 21:00 to 09:00. In summer the Devesa and El Saler beach fill from ten; in winter the shore is empty. On San Juan there is no spearfishing at all. The best water comes in late May and early June, before the releases and before the gota fría.
tide
The level here is as dead as everywhere on this coast. What you read is the Albufera calendar: in autumn the lake is held full — the perellonà — and then drained through the golas, and the whole load off the rice fields goes out to sea right here. At the gola gates themselves, during a release, there is a clear outflow current.
shelter
The same straight east-facing front, but the groynes at the Pujol gola are lower and further apart, so the lee they give is short: with Gregal (NE) the south corner of each bank works, with Xaloc (SE) the north one. Behind you is the Devesa pine forest, which does nothing for the wind over the water. Llevant comes in head-on.
conditions
Here it is not the wind that rules but the sluice: while the Pujol gola stays shut and you have had three dry days, Ponent gives you 3-4 metres on the stones. The moment the Albufera is released the water turns green-brown and drops below a metre, and it holds for days. The 45-160 sector adds surf. Octopus and sargo sit in the cracks between blocks.
hazard
The legal issue here is not so much the port as the reefs: in the Comunitat Valenciana spearfishing is banned over artificial reefs and within 300 m of them, and 44 are installed — check the map before you go. Then: 100 m off swimmers, the gun is loaded in the water only, buoy mandatory. Physically, the gaps between blocks are not somewhere to crawl into.
access
Along the CV-500 through the Devesa pine forest to the Pujol gola, where there is free parking right by the bridge. From the car to the water is two hundred metres of sand and dune. You enter off the sand beside the bank, thirty to forty metres of swimming to the blocks, 3-5 m at the head. Busy in summer, empty in winter.

The window is the usual Valencian one, sunrise to nine, and on San Juan you do not go out at all. But this place has its own nuisance: from nine the sailing school comes out of the marina and the bay fills with dinghies. In winter, December to February, it is empty and sea bass sit on the stones, water at 13-14 degrees.
tide
Forget the level. Everything here is decided by the barranc del Carraixet, the dry bed just south of the marina: nine months a year it does not carry a drop, and after a hard downpour it puts clay, rubbish and branches into the sea within an hour and the place is off for two days. The rest of the time there is no current here at all.
shelter
The two short moles of the Port Saplaya marina stick out of a sand beach and give the smallest lee of the four spots: with Gregal (NE) you hide behind the south one, with a southerly behind the north one, and that is all. It is shallow here, so even a small wave from the east sector switches the place off completely.
conditions
It is the shallowest of the four: 2-4 metres by the blocks, and the water here is the last to clear. You need two or three quiet days of Ponent and then it comes up to 3 metres, enough for a beginner to work the stones out. With any Llevant the bottom lifts into the water and you cannot see past your outstretched arm.
hazard
The marina water is closed under Decreto 41/2013 — do not go inside the moles or onto the entrance line, where yachts move constantly. It is shallow and full of concrete: with any swell you get thrown around between the blocks and scrapes on the stone are routine. Plus the standard set: 100 m off swimmers, buoy, gun loaded under water only.
access
From Alboraia follow the Port Saplaya signs, park by the canal among the coloured houses, two hundred metres to the water. Get in from the beach north of the north mole so you never end up on the entrance line. Twenty metres to the blocks, entry over sand, boots optional — the easiest entry of the four.

There are fewer urban bathing zones here than in Valencia proper, but the rule is the same: a hundred metres off swimmers and a 21:00-09:00 window beside the beaches, night banned. The real nuisance is different — from first light the groynes are lined with shore anglers on long rods. The best months are October and November, water at 19-22 degrees.
tide
The level we ignore — thirteen centimetres. What works here is the along-shore sand transport: it runs north to south and piles sand against the north side of every groyne, so the murk lasts longer there while the south side clears first. There are no rivers or golas nearby, and the rain plume does not reach this far.
shelter
The north stretch: the groynes run perpendicular to the shore and reach further out than the southern ones, so with Gregal (NE) a real pocket of still water sits behind them. With Xaloc and southern swell it is the north side of each pier that works. Ponent, as everywhere on this coast, flattens the whole thing.
conditions
Of Valencia's four spots this is the cleanest: no gola and no river mouth nearby, and after Ponent you get 4-6 metres at the groyne heads, which is a lot for this coast. With Llevant or Gregal out of the 45-160 sector everything drops to a metre, and the sand stays up a full day after the wind dies.
hazard
First, hooks and snapped line on the stones: there is more of it here than anywhere else on this shore, cut with your own knife and do not grab it by hand. Second, the entrance to the Pobla de Farnals marina: port waters are closed under Decreto 41/2013 and the launches come in fast. Buoy with you, never more than 25 m away.
access
Turn off the V-21 for Pobla de Farnals or Puçol, then along the promenade to any of the groynes; parking is free and right against the sand. You enter from the beach beside the bank, the blocks start twenty to thirty metres out, and the pier head gives 4-6 m. Between the piers there is clean sand and nothing to do.

The working window is narrow: sunrise to nine in the morning. Night is banned nationwide, and Valencia's municipal ordinance only allows fishing next to bathing zones between 21:00 and 09:00 — the overlap leaves you the first hours of daylight. On San Juan day spearfishing is banned outright. Water is 13.6 degrees in February, 25.7 in August.
tide
The tide in Valencia is thirteen centimetres — nothing to plan around. What decides is different: the new Túria channel empties into the sea right at Pinedo, and after every heavy rain brown fresh water comes out of it. Plus the port itself, its approach channel and its dredging. The along-shore drift carries all of that south, towards El Saler.
shelter
The Valencia shore is a straight sand front facing east, and it has no natural shelter at all: all you get is the corner of a mole. The port's south mole covers its own south side with Gregal (NE), and with Xaloc (SE) or southern swell you move to the north side. Llevant (E) comes in head-on and covers both.
conditions
The only shot at visibility is Ponent and Llebeig (W and SW) after two or three dry days: you get 3-5 metres on the blocks, and here that counts as a good day. The 45-160 sector shuts the coast down, and with Llevant there is half a metre of soup at the mole. You may work only outside the port line; inside, never.
hazard
The Port of Valencia is one of Europe's biggest container ports plus the Balearic ferries, and its waters are closed to all fishing: Decreto 41/2013 article 4.3, outer anchorage included. Second: the ordinance forbids entering or leaving the water with a loaded gun — you load it under water only. Keep 100 m off swimmers; buoy mandatory.

From the city down the Pinedo avenue to the beach: free, roomy parking and a hundred metres of sand to the water. You walk north along the shore to the rock bank and get in off the sand beside it. There is 5-7 m over the blocks and nothing but sand beyond. The northern end runs into the port line — you do not go there.

  • ✓Spearfishing licence mandatory; the AUTONOMOUS COMMUNITY issues it (not the State) and it is valid in the exterior waters of the whole coast. Free-diving only — scuba is banned (, art. 3).
  • ✓Spearfishing catch may not be sold or traded — it is non-commercial fishing ().
  • ✓Night prohibited: spearfishing only in daylight (sunset to sunrise not allowed) — , art. 16.d.
  • ✓Marker buoy MANDATORY: mark your position with a clearly visible buoy and stay within 25 m of it — , art. 15.
  • ✓Never keep the speargun loaded out of the water — , art. 16.a.

Mandatory in the Basque Country/Murcia/Asturias/Galicia; the federative licence covers it in Galicia/Balearics/Cantabria; the Canaries and Andalusia do NOT require it for the individual licence (a responsible health declaration). Minimum age generally 16 (14 in Andalusia).
Safety protocol
  • Sets: watch the wave trains ≥15 min before entering; Hmax ≈ 2×Hs, the wash can run 50 m past the foam line. A lull >10 min with period >12 s = a big set «overdue», do NOT enter; enter right after a full set passes and re-check at minute 30.
  • Exit FIRST: find your exit AND a backup before entering. On a rocky/boulder shore a 0.5 m rise in swell can make the exit impossible — getting pinned/unable to climb out is the main killer.
  • Headland rip: prominent points often have a permanent topographic rip regardless of the model — locate it, enter/exit on the windward side, never swim against it.
  • Cold: wetsuit per the SST chip; the first shiver = a metabolic surge and a drop in breath-hold → get out at the first steady shiver. Cap the session at 45–60 min below 15 °C.
  • Solo discipline: buoy up; tell someone the spot and exit time; conservative breath-hold (never push it in cold/murky/surfy water); visibility <3 m — don't enter.
  • Afternoon wind: on many coasts the wind builds from midday — plan to be out of the water by midday; the chop builds — get out.
  • UV 11:00–15:00 (UVI ≥6): sunscreen and cover up on the surface interval.
  • Solo is a fundamental risk (hypoxic blackout with no buddy). Any doubt = No-go.

When is the best season in Valencia?

Long season (May–October) and warm water; summer is the most reliable, mornings before the breeze. The tide is negligible — what matters is the wind, the thermocline and the nearby ports and sandy stretches that cut visibility.

How cold is the water in Valencia?

Warm for the Mediterranean: ~14–27 °C. A 3 mm suit in summer, 5 mm in the shoulder months. The thermocline chills the bottom here too.

Is Valencia good for a beginner?

  • ✓There is no fixed national catch cap (, art. 5 delegates it to the communities); the standard is 5 kg/person/day, with 1 specimen allowed not to count (Canaries — Decreto 182/2004, art. 38.3; Murcia; Galicia; Basque Country). Protected species have per-piece quotas.
  • ✓Only a harpoon is allowed — hand-held or mechanically propelled, with one or several points (, art. 14.1). Carrying spearfishing gear and underwater breathing equipment aboard AT THE SAME TIME is prohibited (art. 14.2) — an offence in itself, even if you dived on a breath hold.
  • ✓Spain is not one jurisdiction. The licence is issued by a coastal autonomous community, and you must comply with the rules of the administration on whose littoral you are in the water: «debiendo cumplir la normativa establecida por la administración en cuyo litoral se realice la actividad» (, art. 13). Interior waters — inside the straight baselines: bays, coves, rías, the whole coastal strip — are the community's competence; exterior waters are the State's. So the age, the days of the week, the distances and the are found in your community's act, not in the state one.
  • •Valencian Community: three separate licences (inland, maritime, spearfishing); applied for at the Generalitat Valenciana with Cl@ve; Law 5/2017. Confirm the exact procedure page at gva.es.
  • ✓No-take zone: Cap de Sant Antoni marine reserve (Xàbia–Dénia) — spearfishing banned (see zones).
  • ✓Valencian Community: spearfishing from age 16 and with proven physical fitness (Ley 5/2017, art. 12.1); only a mechanically propelled harpoon is allowed (art. 14.2); autonomous or semi-autonomous diving equipment is prohibited, and having spearguns and that equipment aboard at the same time is PRESUMED to be the illegal practice (art. 14.5). The catch may never be authorised for sale (art. 11.2). There is no «300 m around an artificial reef» radius in this law — that ban lives in each reef's own authorisation.
