The beach clock rules here: from mid-morning the shuttle boats arrive from Sant Antoni, the beach bar opens and the cove becomes something else, so either you get in at dawn or you do not get in. In May and October it is quiet nearly all day. At night the law forbids it.
tide
As in the rest of the Balearics, the tide here does not reach a hand's width and is no reference for anything. The level is moved by wind: with a steady ponent water piles up inside the bay of Portmany and with an easterly it draws back a little, more noticeable on the sandy shore than on the rock.
shelter
Tucked on the southern shore of the bay of Portmany, the cove has pinewood and land at its back, so S and SW winds pass overhead and the water stays still. The westerly sea arrives already broken after rounding the headland, but a N-NE wind gets inside and spoils it.
conditions
The sandy bottom lifts with almost nothing, so the work is on the rocky edges at either end of the cove and along the rim of the meadow, where the water holds clear for longer. With a northerly settled into the bay everything clouds over and it is not worth it; in calm the visibility is very good.
hazard
The real danger is the swimming buoy line and the constant traffic of launches: stay outside the marked zone, keep the float high and never cross in front of the improvised landing spots. The Posidonia meadow is protected and you do not anchor on it. And the catch cannot be sold.
access
You drive in on the road from Sant Antoni and leave the car up top in the pinewood car park, which charges in summer; then it is a short walk to the sand. The sensible thing is to enter over the rocks at either end, never through the middle of the buoyed zone, and to come out on the beach.
Rocky ground toward Cala Bassa; easy entry, semi-sheltered from the N, good for beginners.
First light, always: by mid-morning the boats running to and from Sant Antoni port towards the northern coves start passing and the place stops being quiet. May, June and September are the best months. From sunset to sunrise spearfishing is not allowed anywhere in Spain.
tide
On Ibiza the tide is a matter of centimetres and there is no need to check it; what really moves the water is wind set-up, piling sea against the coast with a ponent and drawing it off with an easterly. Beside the nose of the cape that difference turns into a surface current you feel while swimming.
shelter
Cap Nunó acts as a screen against N and NE winds, which is why the Gració coves stay sheltered when it blows from up there; they look west, though, so with llebeig or ponent from 230-330° the sea comes in head on and the most battered spot is the nose of the cape itself.
conditions
Out on the nose the water is deeper and holds its clarity better; inside the coves, as soon as a bit of sea gets in, the sand lifts off the bottom and you see half as far. With an easterly and several flat days the visibility runs long, and after a hard ponent it pays to let the murk settle.
hazard
The serious thing here is the boats: the stretch between the port and the northern coves is a busy corridor, so a visible buoy and a clear head. There are swimmers in the coves and you do not shoot anywhere near them. Sizes so you do not slip up: corball 30 cm, dèntol 35 cm, cap-roig 30 cm.
access
Park at Cala Gració, a step from Sant Antoni, and follow the coast path north until you look out over the cape; you can also get in off the cove's sand and swim the leg, which is a long one. With a ponent running, do not try to exit on the rock of the nose.

Dawn is the moment, before the boats leave Sant Antoni and before Cala Salada fills up, because the parking above runs out early. September and October give the cleanest water of the year. And remember that night spearfishing is banned everywhere in Spain.
tide
The tide is effectively nil here, a bare quarter of a metre at springs, and no good hour depends on it. What changes the place is wind set-up from the west and the leftover surge from a ponent: over the flat slabs the water rises and falls with every set, and that heave is what rules.
shelter
West-facing coast: the 230-330° sector comes in with nothing to stop it and the worst bearing is 290°, the ponent kicking up a short sea over the Punta Galera slabs. With an easterly or NE wind the breeze blows off the land, the water goes glassy and that is when the place is worth it.
conditions
Under easterly winds the water turns transparent over rock and sand, and the visibility is among the best on this stretch of the Sant Antoni coast. After a ponent blow the sand in Cala Salada stays suspended and the cove looks milky, while the rock outside clears sooner; give it a day.
hazard
The Punta Galera slabs are slippery and with any westerly sea getting in or out over them turns nasty, so read the sets. Boat traffic runs from the port, the buoy is compulsory and you stay within 25 m of it. If a grouper comes, minimum size is 45 cm and it must be marked with a cut in the lower tail lobe.
access
Cala Salada is reached down the narrow road from Sant Antoni and you leave the car up top, since there is little room below; Punta Galera comes via a dirt track and a short path through pines. You get in straight off the rock terraces, and with any sea the sensible exit is the sand of the cove.

You only go with a settled calm window and an early start, because by mid-morning the channel fills with yachts and rental boats that in summer go past without looking. June and September combine better sea with fewer people. And as everywhere in Spain, no fishing from sunset to sunrise.
tide
Insignificant tide, as everywhere on the island: there is no coefficient to look up. What does matter is the channel between sa Conillera and the coast, where a steady wind sets up current that you pay for on the way back; better to cross while the wind is still light and not trust the early calm.
shelter
An islet in open sea has no shelter worth the name: the whole western half circle, 230 to 330°, hits it square, and with a ponent blowing the crossing is off the table. The eastern face of the islet does give a lee, but you have to cross to reach it, and that is the catch.
conditions
This is offshore water with no land runoff and no fine sand to lift, which is why it is usually the clearest around Sant Antoni: on settled days you see a very long way over the stones of the drop-off. The only thing that spoils it is westerly ground swell, which also makes the return trip awkward.
hazard
Mind the legal geography: closed reserves lie to the north and west, ses Bledes about 3.3 km away and es Vedrà-es Vedranell further south, and inside them spearfishing is banned (Decret 41/2015 art. 6.1). Carry the chart, do not let yourself drift, and mark the boat properly.
access
There is no walk-in access: you leave by boat from Sant Antoni port and cross the channel, a short but exposed run. Anchor on sand and never on the meadow, get in and out on the sheltered side of the islet, and keep someone watching on board while the other one goes down.

SOLO is the biggest risk: underwater you can black out from lack of oxygen silently and fatally, with no one around. Solo is never truly «safe». Below are the best weather windows; carry a buoy, tell someone your plan and exit time, and any doubt — don't go.

Mandatory in the Basque Country/Murcia/Asturias/Galicia; the federative licence covers it in Galicia/Balearics/Cantabria; the Canaries and Andalusia do NOT require it for the individual licence (a responsible health declaration). Minimum age generally 16 (14 in Andalusia).
Safety protocol
Sets: watch the wave trains ≥15 min before entering; Hmax ≈ 2×Hs, the wash can run 50 m past the foam line. A lull >10 min with period >12 s = a big set «overdue», do NOT enter; enter right after a full set passes and re-check at minute 30.
Exit FIRST: find your exit AND a backup before entering. On a rocky/boulder shore a 0.5 m rise in swell can make the exit impossible — getting pinned/unable to climb out is the main killer.
Headland rip: prominent points often have a permanent topographic rip regardless of the model — locate it, enter/exit on the windward side, never swim against it.
Cold: wetsuit per the SST chip; the first shiver = a metabolic surge and a drop in breath-hold → get out at the first steady shiver. Cap the session at 45–60 min below 15 °C.
Solo discipline: buoy up; tell someone the spot and exit time; conservative breath-hold (never push it in cold/murky/surfy water); visibility <3 m — don't enter.
Afternoon wind: on many coasts the wind builds from midday — plan to be out of the water by midday; the chop builds — get out.

Yes — in Sant Antoni (Ibiza) you need a recreational sea-fishing licence (issued by the autonomous community); breath-hold only (no scuba), with a marker buoy and no night diving. See the guide.
✓There is no fixed national catch cap (, art. 5 delegates it to the communities); the standard is 5 kg/person/day, with 1 specimen allowed not to count (Canaries — Decreto 182/2004, art. 38.3; Murcia; Galicia; Basque Country). Protected species have per-piece quotas.
✓Only a harpoon is allowed — hand-held or mechanically propelled, with one or several points (, art. 14.1). Carrying spearfishing gear and underwater breathing equipment aboard AT THE SAME TIME is prohibited (art. 14.2) — an offence in itself, even if you dived on a breath hold.
✓Spain is not one jurisdiction. The licence is issued by a coastal autonomous community, and you must comply with the rules of the administration on whose littoral you are in the water: «debiendo cumplir la normativa establecida por la administración en cuyo litoral se realice la actividad» (, art. 13). Interior waters — inside the straight baselines: bays, coves, rías, the whole coastal strip — are the community's competence; exterior waters are the State's. So the age, the days of the week, the distances and the are found in your community's act, not in the state one.
✓Balearic Islands: the spearfishing licence is issued by the Govern (CAIB). Key rule: spearfishing is BANNED in the marine reserves, EXCEPT in Badia de Palma, Migjorn de Mallorca and Llevant de Mallorca (there, with a licence).
✓Balearics: grouper/anfós — 45 cm in interior waters, 50 cm in marine reserves; mandatory marking (a cut in the lower caudal-fin lobe, spearfishing included) — Decreto 34/2014, art. 12 + Annex 3. The «50 cm in reserves» figure comes from the official DG de Pesca table (Aug 2025).
✓Bans: Toro/Malgrats (Ponent), Freus d'Eivissa-Formentera, northern Menorca, etc.; the state RMIP Llevant de Mallorca–Cala Rajada also bans it (see zones).
✓Balearics: in the marine reserves of the interior waters spearfishing is NOT allowed. Where the decree makes an exception it takes an individual authorisation from the Direcció General, and only on Saturdays, Sundays, holidays and two weekdays a week set by resolution (Decret 41/2015, art. 6).
