    Facing you is El Río, the channel between Corralejo and Lobos, and the tide genuinely runs through it; with two and a half metres of range on springs the drift along the shore is obvious from the first minute. Best to get in at the turn and let the water carry you back to where you started.
    shelter
    Punta Elena lies east of Corralejo, where the sand of the dune park begins, and it has Lobos island in front and the bulk of Lanzarote beyond: between them they cut a good share of the northerly swell. What nothing stops is the NE trade, which comes straight in and chops the surface all afternoon.
    conditions
    Over white sand and scattered slabs the light is spectacular and on calm days you get a good twenty metres without trying. The enemy is not swell but wind: two days of hard trade drive the fine dune sand into the water and leave the shallows whitish until it eases off.
    hazard
    No closure drawn on the map does not equal a green light: check in the orders whether this point falls inside an acotada, because outside them the archipelago is shut. Lobos, right across the water, is a natural park with its own visit regime and quota, so ask before assuming anything. Add the harbour, the beach and the night ban. The enquiry is already made: Punta Elena does not fall in the acotadas of the Orden of 29/10/2007 (BOC no. 222, as amended on 3/7/2008), so spearfishing here is prohibited; the point serves for freediving and for watching the current run.
    access
    Park at the end of the promenade, where the dune road grazes the coast, and cross fifty metres of sand to the water. The entry is off the beach with no rock in the way, and you can come out anywhere along the sand, which is exactly what makes this a good place to start out.

    Rocky ground to the east, somewhat sheltered by Lobos island; easy entry, good for beginners; respect the Lobos park.

    Sunrise to sunset, and only if this stretch is a listed acotada. The good hour is the first of the morning, before the trade gets up and before the pools fill with families; in summer the place is packed from mid-morning until the sun drops and there is no way to work in peace.
    tide
    Here the tide is the main factor: the pools empty and fill with it, and on springs we are talking about more than two metres of difference. At low water they are shallow puddles with nothing in them, and at high water the sea comes over the bars with a surge that throws you against the rock.
    shelter
    Los Lagos are the sandy pools north of El Cotillo, closed off by rock bars that hold back the west and northwest sea; inside them it is calm nearly all the time. Beyond the bars there is no shelter at all, and the NE trade crosses the beach sideways, lifting sand and raising chop.
    conditions
    The bottom is white sand with rock patches and the light is huge: in the pools you see the bottom from the shore, and outside, in calm, it goes past twenty metres. Westerly groundswell ruins it by pushing suspended sand over the bars and leaving the water milky for a couple of days.
    hazard
    The Canary regime is permissive by listing, not by exception: if this stretch of El Cotillo is not on the acotadas list, you do not fish here, and a blank map settles nothing. Besides, Los Lagos is the village family beach and the compulsory 150 m from bathers leave little room; outside the bars there is backwash, and night is closed. The annex checked, Los Lagos and the rest of El Cotillo are not acotadas under the Orden of 29/10/2007 (BOC no. 222, version of 3/7/2008): with no acotada there is no lawful spearfishing, and the place is left for freediving, swimming and scouting.
    access
    Park on the dirt flat above the pools north of the village and walk down over the sand; the cleanest entry is at the northern end, next to the rocks. For the outside, it is better to start from the slabs near the Tostón castle and always come back through the same notch.

    Sunrise to sunset and only inside a listed acotada, as everywhere in the Canaries. The calendar here is set by northerly groundswell: from May to September there are runs of flat days, and in winter weeks can pass without a window. Go first thing, before the trade freshens in the afternoon and chops up the shallows.

    On springs the tide climbs to about two and a half metres, and on this low slab coast that changes the whole place: at low water the reef ridges dry out and the hamlet's little cove is left as a puddle. It pays to go in near high water, when there is plenty of water over the rock.
    shelter
    Majanicho sits on the northern edge of Fuerteventura, the hamlet facing 350 degrees, which means straight at the open Atlantic. The bad sector is 300-40 degrees and the worst bearing is NNW at 330: anything coming down from the north explodes on the outer reef slabs. Only with a light trade and no groundswell is it worth planning.
    conditions
    When the north goes to sleep the water is glassy clear, fifteen to twenty metres over lava and pale sandy patches, and you can read the reef ridges from the surface. One long northwesterly swell is enough for the foam off the slabs to load the water with bubbles and sand until you cannot see an arm's length.
    hazard
    Remember the Canary framework: you may only fish inside the acotadas listed in the orders, and the absence of a red patch on the map does not authorise this stretch. Then there is the place itself: heavy shorebreak over live reef, nobody nearby if something goes wrong, a long dirt track back to tarmac and surfers on the peaks. Night is banned. The list has been read: Majanicho does not appear in the acotadas of the Orden of 29/10/2007 (BOC no. 222, amended on 3/7/2008), so spearfishing on this coast is not permitted; the stretch is documented for freediving and for getting to know the reef.
    access
    You come in on the dirt track that leaves Corralejo westward, or dropping down from Lajares; the surface is loose stone but an ordinary car makes it if you go slowly. Park at the hamlet and get in through the sheltered cove, never off the slab front, which is exactly where the wave detonates.

    Volcanic rocky ground and shallows on the north coast; drop-offs with parrotfish and sea bream, very exposed to NW-N swell.

    Sunrise to sunset and only inside a listed acotada. The place demands a flat sea, so the windows fall mostly in summer and at first light, before the trade freshens. After westerly storms you have to let a couple of days go by for the barranco and the cobble to settle down.
    tide
    With two and a half metres on springs, the tide governs the entry: at low water the cobble beach steepens and the stones roll under your feet, while at high water there is enough depth to clear the shorebreak in a couple of strokes. A drift also runs along the cliff, worth testing before you go far.
    shelter
    El Puertito is tucked into the mouth of the Barranco de los Molinos on the west coast, and the cliffs flanking it cut the NE trade right at water level. In exchange it is naked to the Atlantic: any train of west or northwest groundswell walks into the cove with nothing to slow it.
    conditions
    Normally the water is clean and blue, with fifteen to twenty metres over the cobble and the lava tongues at the cliff foot. Two things dirty it: rain, which brings soil down the barranco and stains the shoreline, and swell, which rolls the pebbles and leaves a turbid band hugging the beach.
    hazard
    Before you load, match this stretch against the schedule of acotadas in the Canary orders: outside that list there is no legal spearfishing here, and our map not drawing a closure changes nothing. The physical side is shorebreak over rolling cobbles that sweep your legs, a tiny village with no help nearby, and the ban on fishing at night. The list cross-checked: Puertito de los Molinos is not among the acotadas of the Orden of 29/10/2007 (BOC no. 222, amended on 3/7/2008), and that puts spearfishing out of the question here; the place is left for freediving and reading the cobble.
    access
    You drop down the narrow road that follows the barranco from the FV-221 to the hamlet; park before the houses so as not to block the lane. Get in at the northern end of the cobble beach, waiting for the gap between sets, and come out in the same place: the rest is sheer wall.

    West-coast rocky ground; drop-offs exposed to the W-NW, mind the swell.

    SOLO is the biggest risk: underwater you can black out from lack of oxygen silently and fatally, with no one around. Solo is never truly «safe». Below are the best weather windows; carry a buoy, tell someone your plan and exit time, and any doubt — don't go.

    • ✓Spearfishing licence mandatory; the AUTONOMOUS COMMUNITY issues it (not the State) and it is valid in the exterior waters of the whole coast. Free-diving only — scuba is banned (, art. 3).
    • ✓Spearfishing catch may not be sold or traded — it is non-commercial fishing ().
    • ✓Night prohibited: spearfishing only in daylight (sunset to sunrise not allowed) — , art. 16.d.
    • ✓Marker buoy MANDATORY: mark your position with a clearly visible buoy and stay within 25 m of it — , art. 15.
    • ✓Never keep the speargun loaded out of the water — , art. 16.a.
    • ✓Keep at least 300 m from professional fishing vessels that are working — , art. 12.b.
    • ✓The state act (, art. 16) bans, for spearfishing: a loaded gun out of the water; explosive/electric points and lamps (hand torches excepted); underwater scooters; night — from sunset to sunrise. Plus art. 12 b), d), e): 300 m from professional fishing vessels, light as an attractant, poisons/explosives. A ban in a PARTICULAR reserve, port or beach comes from that place's OWN instrument (the reserve's order, the autonomous community's rules, the port authority) — see the no-take zones on the map and your community's rules.
    • ✓Min. sizes by ( + + EU 2019/1241): sea bass 42 cm (rec.) / 36 cm / 25 cm Mediterranean / 22 cm Canaries; gilthead bream 20 cm and white seabream 23 cm in the Mediterranean (EU 2019/1241); grouper 45 cm. See your zone's species card.
    • ✓Only species in Annex I of may be taken; keeping, landing or transporting undersized specimens is prohibited.
    • ✓The licence needs a medical fitness certificate for free-diving and civil-liability insurance (or a federative licence, which includes it). Mandatory in the Basque Country/Murcia/Asturias/Galicia; the federative licence covers it in Galicia/Balearics/Cantabria; the Canaries and Andalusia do NOT require it for the individual licence (a responsible health declaration). Minimum age generally 16 (14 in Andalusia).
    • ✓There is no fixed national catch cap (, art. 5 delegates it to the communities); the standard is 5 kg/person/day, with 1 specimen allowed not to count (Canaries — Decreto 182/2004, art. 38.3; Murcia; Galicia; Basque Country). Protected species have per-piece quotas.
    • ✓Only a harpoon is allowed — hand-held or mechanically propelled, with one or several points (, art. 14.1). Carrying spearfishing gear and underwater breathing equipment aboard AT THE SAME TIME is prohibited (art. 14.2) — an offence in itself, even if you dived on a breath hold.
    • ✓Spain is not one jurisdiction. The licence is issued by a coastal autonomous community, and you must comply with the rules of the administration on whose littoral you are in the water: «debiendo cumplir la normativa establecida por la administración en cuyo litoral se realice la actividad» (, art. 13). Interior waters — inside the straight baselines: bays, coves, rías, the whole coastal strip — are the community's competence; exterior waters are the State's. So the age, the days of the week, the distances and the are found in your community's act, not in the state one.
    • ✓🔴 The Canary Islands run a PERMISSIVE regime, not a prohibitive one. In the archipelago's interior waters spearfishing is allowed ONLY INSIDE the zonas acotadas listed in the act's annex: «las zonas acotadas dentro de las cuales se permite la práctica de la pesca marítima de recreo submarina, son las que figuran en el anexo» (Orden 29.10.2007). For the archipelago's exterior waters the same is set by an act of its own (Orden 22.02.1988). So the question is not «is there a closed zone here» but «is this point inside an acotada»: outside one, spearfishing is NOT permitted, even if the map shows no closures at all.
    • ✓Canary Islands (special regime, Decreto 182/2004): the «2nd-class» licence enables recreational spearfishing (free-diving only, scuba banned), valid 3 years; applied for at the Gobierno de Canarias (procedure 1186).
    • ✓Canaries (Decreto 182/2004): the speargun may not be used within 150 m of bathers, beaches, busy areas or surface fishers (art. 36.j); kept loaded/armed out of the water (art. 41.a); any protected, closed-season or undersized catch is returned to the sea (art. 38.1). State distance 300 m to professional fishing (, art. 12.b).
    • •Bans (RMIP): La Restinga–Mar de las Calmas (El Hierro), La Palma island, La Graciosa and the northern Lanzarote islets — spearfishing banned (see zones).
    • ✓Canaries (Decreto 182/2004): spearfishing from sunrise to sunset (art. 35.1), with a speargun, a knife and a (art. 31.1). The recreational daily cap is 5 kg per person, in several pieces or in a single heavier one, and one piece may be left out of the count (art. 38.3). The catch is for own consumption or for charity only, and any commercial use is prohibited (art. 38.2). Carrying catch BETWEEN ISLANDS is capped at 10 kg — in several legal-sized pieces, or in one that may exceed that weight (art. 38.5). This regulation sets NO closed seasons of its own: under art. 172.2 the minimum sizes and the épocas de are «las establecidas en la normativa comunitaria, nacional o autonómica», so the Canarian closed-season calendar has to be looked for in another act, not in this one.
    • ⛔ Seahorses (Hippocampus) — protected (RPE).

    Rules change and are REGIONAL. Before heading out, check with the competent autonomous community (licence) and the min-size table in force.

    Safety protocol
    • Sets: watch the wave trains ≥15 min before entering; Hmax ≈ 2×Hs, the wash can run 50 m past the foam line. A lull >10 min with period >12 s = a big set «overdue», do NOT enter; enter right after a full set passes and re-check at minute 30.
    • Exit FIRST: find your exit AND a backup before entering. On a rocky/boulder shore a 0.5 m rise in swell can make the exit impossible — getting pinned/unable to climb out is the main killer.
    • Headland rip: prominent points often have a permanent topographic rip regardless of the model — locate it, enter/exit on the windward side, never swim against it.
    • Cold: wetsuit per the SST chip; the first shiver = a metabolic surge and a drop in breath-hold → get out at the first steady shiver. Cap the session at 45–60 min below 15 °C.
