Open the seafloor mapThe only genuine granite headland on the seafront, dividing Praia Central from Praia Brava; walk in from the viewpoint. Rock-and-sand bottom, 0–6 m. The water is nearly always turbid from bay outflow: expect 1–3 m and only go on a calm day with no rain the day before. Signal buoy mandatory (IN MMA nº 21/2005 art. 5º). Coordinate computed on the OSM coastline, 51 m off the beach.
Google MapsExposed stretch just south of Morro do Cristo, known locally as Paraguaios: open sea, surf, loose rock at the point and sand beyond, 0–5 m. It is a surfers' and shore-anglers' beach; for a speargun it works only on slack tide and a flat sea — any south swell turns the water milky and sets a longshore current. Approximate coordinate on the coastline.

Check the cam BEFORE you leave. Foam, brown/green murk, or waves washing the entry rocks = No-go. At night/in fog the cam is useless — treat it as «unknown», NOT «green».

North end of the seafront, close to the bay entrance: rock outcrops in the sand and, per local sources, the remains of an old wreck exposed at low water — not confirmed from a primary source. Shallow, 0–4 m. It sits in the direct influence of the bay mouth: turbid on the ebb, strong tidal current. Approximate coordinate and a weak place-name match.
Google MapsA fishing village at the Guaratuba Bay entrance; the inner side is sheltered, the outer one opens to the sea. It is one of two places the municipal sources name as a fishing area. For diving the bay mouth is the problem: strong ebb current and sediment-loaded water. Slack tide and a flat sea only. Mixed bottom, 1–8 m; coordinate 94 m off the shore.
Google MapsSOLO is the biggest risk: underwater you can black out from lack of oxygen silently and fatally, with no one around. Solo is never truly «safe». Below are the best weather windows; carry a buoy, tell someone your plan and exit time, and any doubt — don't go.
Rules change and vary by state. Before heading out, check on gov.br (recreational licence, MPA) and the state closed seasons/sizes; apnea only, goliath grouper is banned.
Guaratuba has rock entry points such as Costão do Morro do Cristo, Praia Brava (Paraguaios) — pedras ao sul do Cristo and Praia das Pedras / Prainha (norte da orla). A town on the south bank of the Guaratuba Bay mouth: long sand beach, one real rocky headland (Morro do Cristo) and a scatter of rock at the north end of the seafront. Below you'll find each spot (access, shelter and hazards) and today's forecast.
Inside the Paranaguá and Guaratuba estuaries the water is turbid all year; clear days only happen on the outer rocks, in summer with a north wind.
Temperate, ~18–25 °C — a 3–5 mm suit. The only clean bottom is the outer Itacolomi rocks, to 16 m; inside the estuaries there is no visibility.
Advanced: the state's only clear mark is 7 nm off the bay mouth, boat only; everything else is turbid water.
Yes — in Guaratuba you need the Licença de Pesca Amadora (gov.br portal; the category follows boat use, per the MPA: «desembarcada» R$ 20/yr when you enter from shore, «embarcada» R$ 60/yr with a boat — Portaria 616/2022 itself sets no categories; 65+/pensioners exempt). Breath-hold only (no scuba tank — art. 4º §3º), licence on you (art. 17); take home at most 15 kg + 1 fish and never filleted or headless (arts. 8º and 12); don't sell the catch (art. 6º). A marker buoy is mandatory in Santa Catarina (IN MMA 21/2005, art. 5º) — there is no federal buoy rule. Goliath grouper (mero) is full no-take, dusky grouper has a 1 Nov–28 Feb closed season, badejo-mira and peroá close on 25/10/2026 (Portaria GM/MMA 1.666/2026, art. 12) and taking lobster while diving is banned all year (Portaria SAP/MAPA 221/2021, art. 6º III).
