Open the seafloor mapRocky point at the north end of the Praia Brava de Caiobá cove, between the beach and the Morro do Boi. Shallow, 0–5 m, rock and sand. The cove is swell-exposed — no good on a south sea. The coordinate was derived from the coastline and not from a diving source: this is not a documented mark, it is a terrain read, to be confirmed before you leave home.
Google MapsA small vegetation-free rocky massif off Caiobá, ~13 km out, maximum depth 16 m — with the Currais, the reference dive site of the Paraná coast. Plenty of life: moray, turtle, baitballs. The caveat comes from the diving sources themselves: proximity to Guaratuba Bay makes visibility swing without warning, 2 to 12 m. Boat only. Do NOT confuse it with the Ilhas dos Currais marine national park, ~13 km north-northeast — that one is closed.
Cameras, map and reference — to hand as you come up.
Check the cam BEFORE you leave. Foam, brown/green murk, or waves washing the entry rocks = No-go. At night/in fog the cam is useless — treat it as «unknown», NOT «green».
SpainThe municipality's biggest headland, ~160 m high, dividing Praia Brava de Caiobá from the bay side; an eco trail drops from Praia Bela to the rocks. Angling guides give 3–10 m against the rock. This is the best shore-accessible stone bottom here — but visibility is day-dependent and the rock is slippery: grip boots and a buoy. Coordinate computed on the OSM coastline, 50 m out.
Google MapsAround two thousand concrete structures and two scuttled bulk barges sunk in 2001 between the Ilhas dos Currais marine national park and the Itacolomis islands, at 15–19 m; light to moderate current, 2–12 m visibility. It is the best artificial relief on the Paraná coast, with 100–200 kg goliath groupers on record. ⚠️ WARNING, and precisely because of that: the goliath grouper (Epinephelus itajara) is CR under Portaria GM/MMA nº 1.667/2026 — capture prohibited with no exception. The coordinate is APPROXIMATE and was never published by a primary source; confirm it with the boatman.
Google MapsRocky point in the centre of Matinhos, walk-in from the promenade. Local angling guides give 2–6 m of depth; for a speargun it is shallow and stirred, and it works on a rising tide with a flat sea. Turbid most of the year. Signal buoy mandatory (IN MMA nº 21/2005 art. 5º). Coordinate computed on the OSM coastline, 49 m off the beach — approximate, confirm your entry.
Google MapsSOLO is the biggest risk: underwater you can black out from lack of oxygen silently and fatally, with no one around. Solo is never truly «safe». Below are the best weather windows; carry a buoy, tell someone your plan and exit time, and any doubt — don't go.
Rules change and vary by state. Before heading out, check on gov.br (recreational licence, MPA) and the state closed seasons/sizes; apnea only, goliath grouper is banned.
Matinhos has rock entry points such as Pico de Matinhos, Morro do Boi — costão norte (Caiobá) and Costão norte da Praia Brava de Caiobá. A Paraná-coast resort town between the Guaratuba Bay mouth (Caiobá) and the Pico de Matinhos: sand beach with two small rocky points and one bigger mass, the Morro do Boi. Below you'll find each spot (access, shelter and hazards) and today's forecast.
Inside the Paranaguá and Guaratuba estuaries the water is turbid all year; clear days only happen on the outer rocks, in summer with a north wind.
Temperate, ~18–25 °C — a 3–5 mm suit. The only clean bottom is the outer Itacolomi rocks, to 16 m; inside the estuaries there is no visibility.
Advanced: the state's only clear mark is 7 nm off the bay mouth, boat only; everything else is turbid water.
Yes — in Matinhos you need the Licença de Pesca Amadora (gov.br portal; the category follows boat use, per the MPA: «desembarcada» R$ 20/yr when you enter from shore, «embarcada» R$ 60/yr with a boat — Portaria 616/2022 itself sets no categories; 65+/pensioners exempt). Breath-hold only (no scuba tank — art. 4º §3º), licence on you (art. 17); take home at most 15 kg + 1 fish and never filleted or headless (arts. 8º and 12); don't sell the catch (art. 6º). A marker buoy is mandatory in Santa Catarina (IN MMA 21/2005, art. 5º) — there is no federal buoy rule. Goliath grouper (mero) is full no-take, dusky grouper has a 1 Nov–28 Feb closed season, badejo-mira and peroá close on 25/10/2026 (Portaria GM/MMA 1.666/2026, art. 12) and taking lobster while diving is banned all year (Portaria SAP/MAPA 221/2021, art. 6º III).
