- In doubt, the order in force at Bari is asked of the Capitaneria and not of the neighbour in the car park. On a shore oriented at 115° the usable light ends before the legal hour, which stays the hour of the sun. Carrying your papers costs nothing and settles everything.

- Even at springs the band out to five metres stays 980 m wide. If anything changes the level at Bari, it is pressure and wind, not the moon. If you go into a channel, go in against the current and come back with it.
- zaklon
- The coast here runs E–W and opens to the southeast: that is what decides which forecast to read. In a bay like this the shelter is a few tens of metres wide, tucked against the windward point rather than in the middle of the arc, and in a hard Scirocco not even that. At Bari the old rule holds: watch the sea for ten minutes, then decide. Dead swell from the southeast arrives under a clear sky and no wind at all.

- The bottom here is measured and not narrated: the contours come from the EMODnet survey. The ground is long: the 20 m contour sits about 1700 m from the shore and the 10 m contour 1100 m.

- On the shoreline at Bari the same national rules apply without discounts: breath-hold, daylight, marker in sight. In a cove the risk is the false calm: from inside you cannot see that the sea outside has built. With Scirocco building, the window shuts sooner than the forecast says.
- pristup
- In the bay you pick the sheltered side to get in and the same side to get out. Fix a landmark ashore in your head: from out there the coast changes face.
The two small coves just south-east of the Torre a Mare harbour: low slabs, cobbles and posidonia twenty metres out, usually 2–8 m. Entry down the path at the end of Via dei Trulli. Honest, readable ground — the right choice when the tramontana shuts the northern stretch.

- At Bari it is worth losing ten minutes to check the local order rather than arguing about it later. DPR 1639/1968 dates from 1968 and is still the reference text: it is not a historical detail. With Levante forecast to strengthen it pays to go earlier rather than to stay longer. Keeping to the hours is also the simplest way of having no trouble.
- plima
- The typical range on this stretch is between twenty and forty centimetres: it opens no passages and closes none. It is worth telling a real tide from a wind surge: the second one shows, the first almost never does. A surge pushed by Levante can raise the level more than the tide itself.
- zaklon
- The bay works like a funnel: with the swell in the mouth the water inside dirties, and it stays dirty after the wind has dropped. You are in the lee in Ponente; the moment the wind goes east, the water under the shore dirties. With leftover swell the surface lies: watch the sets from land for a couple of minutes before deciding. Before getting in, look at where you will come out if the wind turns: the exit is not always the entry.

- In poor clarity at Bari it pays to work short and close to the bottom instead of heading out. The slope is regular: ten metres about 360 m out, twenty at 1200 m. On doubtful days get in short and extend only if the water holds. If you cannot see the bottom, you do not know what is over your head on the way up.

- Five hundred metres from used beaches: in summer it is the prohibition you run into most often. In an inlet the murky water hides the bottom and whatever has ended up on it. Hurrying at the exit is the commonest cause of injuries on the rock. At Bari the conditions change faster than the forecast does.
- pristup
- In the bay you pick the sheltered side to get in and the same side to get out. Get in where you get out: the symmetry is the safest thing about it.
Low rocky cove in the Cozze hamlet, 23 km south-east of Bari: slabs, cobbles and the posidonia edge, generally 2–8 m. Less worked than the city coast.

- Breathing apparatus is prohibited: you go down on breath-hold and nothing else. At Bari the bathing season changes the usable distances far more than the sea ever does. A check takes two minutes to settle if your declaration is in order.

- In a hard Levante the level rises more than any spring tide manages. On this coast the tide stays in the centimetres and generates no flow, neither useful nor troublesome. With current and poor clarity together, better to postpone.
- zaklon
- The shore in front of the mark faces east, about 86°, so everything arriving from that sector gets in unobstructed. An inlet closed between two points holds while the sea arrives across it; head on, it does not hold at all. Safety here is decided by the swell and not by the depth. At Bari the swell forecast matters more than the wind forecast on this stretch.

- Look at the colour before you go down: full green is workable, milky brown is not. The ground is long: the 20 m contour sits about 1300 m from the shore and the 10 m contour 300 m. Better two hours in the right water than six in the wrong one.
- opasnost
- The mouth of the bay is where the swell concentrates and where getting back becomes difficult. Under sixteen you do not handle a speargun: the rule is national. The surface marker is not there for you: it is there for whoever is coming. The safety rules hold on the easy days too.
- pristup
- The entry off the beach is the most comfortable and the murkiest: it pays to cross the dirty band straight away. Look at the exit point before getting in: from inside everything looks the same. At Bari the best place is the one you can leave without hurrying.
Low limestone shelf 19 km from Bari: steps, sand pockets and thin posidonia, usually 2–9 m. Entry anywhere off the seafront; the harbour stays to the north-west.

Low rock ledge off the San Giorgio lido, mixed rock and sand, an easy bottom down to 8-10 m. Shore entry; in summer the beach is full, so get in well away from the swimmers. With a NE wind the water turns milky.

- The orders of the Capitaneria responsible for Bari can add seasonal prohibitions, and they outrank the general rule. Plan the way back while the light is still good: coming out over rock in the dark is another thing entirely.

- At Bari nobody plans an outing around the tide, and they are right not to. In practice the tide does not enter the decision here: the wind of the last few hours does.
- zaklon
- Over the cap of a shoal the swell stands up before it reaches the shore: what looks flat from land can break over the top. The opening to the northwest is wide: no nearby storm is needed here, an old sea from that sector is enough. If the sea builds while you are in, come out earlier than feels necessary.

- The slope is regular: ten metres about 390 m out, twenty at 880 m. The good day here is not made by the depth but by the water: if you can see, you can work in five metres. With Maestrale strengthening, the good window closes without warning. With the sun high the rock reads; under cloud you have to work closer.
- opasnost
- The marker has to follow you wherever you work: 50 m from the vertical below it is the legal maximum. In Maestrale the passage between the shoal and the coast becomes the most dangerous part of the route. Blackout gives no warning, and the margins shrink when you are tired.
- pristup
- The crossing out to the structure is the exposed part of the day. With Maestrale strengthening the exit is brought forward, not discussed. At Bari many accesses cross private property: if it is signed, look for another one.
The old fishing village north of Bari: the reef outside the mole, flat rock and boulder fall over sand, generally 2–7 m. Octopus and sea bream year-round, cuttlefish in spring.

- The 500 m from used beaches is measured from the water's edge: in bathing season do the arithmetic before getting in. With Tramontana in the forecast the useful window shortens by itself, long before sunset. The rules change from one municipality to the next more than you would think. At Bari in summer the bathing strip changes the usable distances completely.

- With a range that small the entry rock sits at the same level at any hour. The level barely moves: the 10 m contour stays 680 m from the shore at any hour of the day. At Bari the sea tells you the time better than any table. The ten-metre line, 680 m offshore, does not move with the level: it moves with the swell.

- With an exposure of 345° the awkward sector runs from northwest to northeast, and outside it the day is usually saved. In Tramontana the detached rocks break the swell but hand it back confused, and that crossed sea tires you more than a clean wave. At Bari whoever gets in first checks, whoever gets in out of habit is trusting yesterday. A metre of long swell from the north is worth more than two metres of short chop raised inshore.

- The 500 m from used beaches starts at the water's edge: in summer it is the first calculation to make. The danger of an isolated rock is the distance from land, not the depth. With Tramontana strengthening the margin is spent without your noticing. At Bari floating lines are seen late: keep an eye above you as well.

- In Tramontana the crossing out to the shoal is worth thinking about twice, because on the way back you will have it against you. At Bari the return is planned on the afternoon swell, not on the morning one. If an access is closed, that is not an invitation to go through anyway.
The urban reef north of the port, below the San Girolamo seafront: armour boulders over sand and low rock, generally 1–6 m. Sea bream, octopus and mullet among the blocks. The water dirties fast with a north-easterly.

- At Bari as anywhere else, the hours of the session are the hours of the sun. If a stretch is closed, it is closed: there is no local version of the rule. A shore oriented at 21° loses the sun before sunset: take it into account for the last descent.

- Swell from the north moves more water in ten minutes than the tide moves in six hours. Between the shore and five metres of water there are 520 m, and no tide shifts that line appreciably. At Bari the tide calendar is no substitute for reading the sea. If the water carries you along the coast, come back inside the rock line.
- zaklon
- The exposure measured on the coastline is 21°, that is full north: in Tramontana there is no shelter here, in Ostro the water flattens. In a cove only what comes through the mouth counts: if the mouth is looking at today's sea, no shelter inside will hold. With the wind from the south at your back you can work; with the swell from the north in your face you look and go home.

The ground is long: the 20 m contour sits about 1500 m from the shore and the 10 m contour 600 m. Judge the colour from above before you get wet: from inside you lose the comparison. The ascent is looked at before the descent.

- Coves also collect what the sea brings: lost nets and lines on the bottom. At Bari, as along the whole Italian coast, the surface marker and the 50 m radius are not negotiable. If you are alone, halve everything: depth, times and distance from shore.
- pristup
- In a cove you normally get in off the low shore at the head of the bay, where the water is calmer. At Bari the accesses change with the bathing season. In a hard Tramontana the windward exit becomes unusable: check an alternative.
The city beach south of the port, with rock ridges and blocks at both ends of the sand, usually 1–5 m. A very convenient entry, but it is a bathing beach: in summer keep your distance and work at dawn. The port is immediately north — do not drift up.

Just outside the small harbour of Torre a Mare, some 380 m north of the tower: slabs, boulders and posidonia below 4-5 m. Entry from the rocks north of the mole, clear of the mouth. Sea bream and octopus; boat traffic in summer, float mandatory.
