Early morning before the thermal NW wind (nortada) builds; best season is late summer and autumn, when the ocean is calmer and warmer.

Low or rising tide: the ebb exposes the rocky reefs and gives better near-bottom visibility, and low tide is also when you can walk in from Odeceixe-Mar.

High cliffs to the south and east take some bite out of southerly swell and the NE offshore wind; against the dominant W/NW Atlantic swell there is almost no shelter.

The main danger is the rock entry/exit in shorebreak: incoming swell slams the rocks and the pebble strip under the south cliff and can throw you onto the reef. Rip currents also run on this river-mouth coast. Only enter when the swell is genuinely small.

Park at Praia de Odeceixe-Mar and take the path/boardwalks south to the Adegas naturist beach (or along the shore at low tide). Enter the water over the pebble-and-rock strip under the south cliff.

The rockiest and quietest entry around: rocky-reef bottom with algae and submerged caves, holding sargo, sea bream and bass. Official naturist beach; hunt outside the swimming zone. The whole coast lies in the SW Alentejo & Costa Vicentina Natural Park — night spearfishing is banned.

Strong rip at the Seixe river mouth (water drains along the north rocks) and unpredictable shorebreak on the rock ledge — it can grab you and drag you over the reef fast. Stay out of the river-mouth channel: spearfishing is banned there and boats/kayaks pass through.

Park right at Praia de Odeceixe-Mar, water is a two-minute walk; move to the rocky north end, away from the central swimming zone.

Blue Flag with summer lifeguards — hunting is closed in the swimming zone, so this is a fallback on the side rocks, not the main spot. The bottom by the north rocks is reef, algae and submerged caves.

  • ✓Spearfishing daily limit: fish + cephalopods — 15 kg (excluding the largest specimen). General rod-and-line recreational fishing — 10 kg.
  • ✓Invertebrates (including spider crab) — 2 kg/day total.
  • ✓Spider crab: min. carapace 12 cm; (closed season) 15.02–15.06 — applies to recreational gathering too.

Sigurnosni protokol
  • Sets: watch the wave trains ≥15 min before entering; Hmax ≈ 2×Hs, the wash can run 50 m past the foam line. A lull >10 min with period >12 s = a big set «overdue», do NOT enter; enter right after a full set passes and re-check at minute 30.
  • Exit FIRST: find your exit AND a backup before entering. At Cabo Raso/Arriba a 0.5 m rise in swell makes a boulder exit impossible — getting pinned/unable to climb out is the main killer here.
  • Headland rip: at Cabo Raso there is a permanent topographic rip regardless of the model — locate it, enter/exit on the windward side, never swim against it.
  • Cold: wetsuit per the SST chip; the first shiver = a metabolic surge and a drop in breath-hold → get out at the first steady shiver. Cap the session at 45–60 min below 15 °C.
  • Solo discipline: buoy up; tell someone the spot and exit time; conservative breath-hold (never push it in cold/murky/surfy water); visibility <3 m — don't enter.
  • Nortada (Jun–Sep): wind builds from midday — be out of the water by ~11:00; the chop builds — get out.
  • UV 11:00–15:00 (UVI ≥6): sunscreen and cover up on the surface interval.
  • Solo is a fundamental risk (hypoxic blackout with no buddy). Any doubt = No-go.
