- With ten metres of water 240 m from the shore, the band where you meet the local orders is all of it right here. At Monte Argentario as anywhere else, the hours of the session are the hours of the sun. Carrying your papers costs nothing and settles everything. Plan the way back while the light is still good: coming out over rock in the dark is another thing entirely.

- The current you will find towards the west will nearly always be wind-driven and not tidal. If anything changes the level at Monte Argentario, it is pressure and wind, not the moon. The way back, 240 m to the five-metre band, is decided beforehand and not on the way. In a hard Ponente the water piles up inshore and drains away sideways.

- In a bay like this the shelter is a few tens of metres wide, tucked against the windward point rather than in the middle of the arc, and in a hard Ponente not even that. The opening to the west is wide: no nearby storm is needed here, an old sea from that sector is enough. The 240 m that separate the shore from ten metres of water tell you how much sea it takes to ruin the day. At Monte Argentario the old rule holds: watch the sea for ten minutes, then decide.

- The strip under the shore is the last to clear; the clean part starts where the bottom breaks away. A slope this steep keeps the dirty strip narrow: past 240 m the sight is nearly always better. After three calm days the water at Monte Argentario is a different water. Past 240 m from the shore it is the water that decides the day and not the willingness.
- κίνδυνος
- The marker has to follow you even when you are working 240 m from the shore: 50 m from the vertical below it is the legal maximum. The mouth of the bay is where the swell concentrates and where getting back becomes difficult. With 240 m out to five metres, the exit is short only if you decide on it in time. With Ponente building, the window shuts sooner than the forecast says.

- At Monte Argentario the entry at the head of the cove is the one that holds up best even in a made-up sea. With the shore 30 m away and five metres of water at 240 m, the band to cross is a short one. Count the 240 m that separate you from the five-metre contour: they are the measure of the way back. If you do not fancy swimming the 240 m back from ten metres of water, do not go any further out.
