In doubt, the order in force at Tropea is asked of the Capitaneria and not of the neighbour in the car park. On a shore oriented at 317° the usable light ends before the legal hour, which stays the hour of the sun. Note the hour you will come out before you get in: from 30 m of shore the way back always looks shorter than it is. Plan the way back while the light is still good: coming out over rock in the dark is another thing entirely.
tide
Between the shore and five metres of water there are 410 m, and no tide shifts that line appreciably. Even at springs the band out to five metres stays 410 m wide: the level does not change the route. The ten-metre line, 430 m offshore, does not move with the level: it moves with the swell. Plan on the swell: here it is the only parameter that really changes the day.
shelter
A detached rock carries its own lee with it, a few metres wide; outside those metres the sea is the open sea. In Ponente or Tramontana the swell arrives across and you can still work by staying tight to the rock. When the swell gets in, the whole coastal strip, 410 m wide here, lifts and the clarity goes. If the swell starts working inside the 410 m of coastal strip, the session is over.
conditions
With twenty metres at 600 m from the shore the session is organised in bands rather than in points. If you cannot see the bottom 410 m out, the day is over before it starts. At Tropea the good days are few and have to be taken when they come. By 430 m from the shore you already know whether it is worth going on.
hazard
The danger of an isolated rock is the distance from land, not the depth. The marker has to follow you even when you are working 430 m from the shore: 50 m from the vertical below it is the legal maximum. The way back from 430 m out is longer than it looks once you are tired. With 410 m out to five metres, the exit is short only if you decide on it in time.
access
You get in from land and then cross: the exit point is fixed before you set off. The entry is immediate: 30 m from the coast, measured on the OSM line. Count the 410 m that separate you from the five-metre contour: they are the measure of the way back. If you do not fancy swimming the 430 m back from ten metres of water, do not go any further out.

Between the shore and five metres of water there are 470 m: that is the stretch you want to cover in good light. A hundred metres is the minimum from fixed fishing installations and from vessels anchored outside harbours. A shore oriented at 352° loses the sun before sunset: take it into account for the last descent. At Tropea the season conditions the law more than it conditions the sea.
tide
The level barely moves: the 10 m contour stays 540 m from the shore at any hour of the day. High water pushed by Tramontana counts for more than a spring tide. With the shore 100 m from the mark, the alongshore current counts for more than any table. The way back, 470 m to the five-metre band, is decided beforehand and not on the way.
shelter
The coast here runs NE–SW and opens to the north: that is what decides which forecast to read. In Tramontana the detached rocks break the swell but hand it back confused, and that crossed sea tires you more than a clean wave. With the wind from the south at your back you can work; with the swell from the north in your face you look and go home. At Tropea the swell forecast matters more than the wind forecast on this stretch.
conditions
The bottom falls away calmly, with no steps: depth is earned with distance, 790 m to reach twenty. The 10 m contour runs about 540 m from the shore and is the practical reference for this entry. At Tropea it pays to come out feeling you stopped early. The best water nearly always arrives from offshore on a light Ostro.
hazard
In Tramontana the passage between the shoal and the coast becomes the most dangerous part of the route. The daily limit is 5 kg per person and the catch may not be sold. At Tropea floating lines are seen late: keep an eye above you as well. At 100 m from the shore no emergency sorts itself out: come out at the first sign.
access
In Tramontana the crossing out to the shoal is worth thinking about twice, because on the way back you will have it against you. The 100 m crossing is made thinking of the sea you expect on the way back, not the one you have now. At Tropea many accesses cross private property: if it is signed, look for another one. The last stretch back to land, 100 m, is always done with less breath than you expected.

With ten metres of water 190 m from the shore, the band where you meet the local orders is all of it right here. The framework is national: in Italy the basic rules hold from Ventimiglia to Trieste. At Tropea it is better to know the prohibition than to discover it from a fine. Arrive with time to look the place over before getting in.
tide
The level moves by a few centimetres and opens or closes no passage at all. Swell from the north moves more water in ten minutes than the tide moves in six hours. If you go into a channel, go in against the current and come back with it. At Tropea the sea tells you the time better than any table.
shelter
You are in the lee in Ostro; the moment the wind goes north, the water under the shore dirties. Here the protection comes from the ground behind the shore rather than from the coast itself, so in Tramontana where you stand is what matters. With wind from the north building, the window shuts fast: plan the way back with margin. A metre of long swell from the north is worth more than two metres of short chop raised inshore.
conditions
Here the shape of the bottom is the only certain figure, and it is worth reading before you get in. 360 m of swimming is all it takes to have twenty metres under you: the slope is steep and the bottom breaks away early. At Tropea the inshore current shifts the murk within hours: waiting sometimes works better than moving. Short water, short times: the tiredness arrives sooner than it seems.
hazard
On an open front the risk builds slowly: the sea grows while you are turned the other way. Five hundred metres from used beaches: in summer it is the prohibition you run into most often. With Tramontana building, the window shuts sooner than the forecast says. At Tropea the real risk is not the depth: it is the combination of tiredness and swell.
access
From here to the 5 m contour is about 140 m, and it pays to measure them on the way out so as not to find them long on the way back. The access is off the coastal front, at the first workable point you find. At Tropea the accesses change with the bathing season. The route on land is not mapped: the survey only says where the rock ends and the water begins.

  • ✓NO paid licence, but a free MASAF REGISTRATION is mandatory (recreational sea-fishing declaration, online via SIAN/SPID, annual) — it is not a «licence».
  • ✓Free-diving only: scuba/rebreather/hookah BANNED (art. 128-bis DPR 1639/68). The 16+ rule comes from a different act — D.Lgs 4/2012, art. 6 c. 5; handing a speargun to an under-16 is an offence (art. 13-octies c. 3 b, as replaced by L. 75/2026).
  • ✓Night prohibited: spearfishing only from dawn to sunset (art. 129e DPR 1639/68).
  • ✓Distances (art. 129 DPR 1639/68): ≥500 m from beaches with bathers; ≥100 m from fixed gear/set nets and from vessels anchored outside ports.
  • ✓Buoy MANDATORY (art. 130 DPR 1639/68): float with a red flag bearing a white diagonal stripe, visible ≥300 m; the diver stays within 50 m of the buoy/support boat.
  • ✓The speargun may not be kept armed out of the water (art. 131 DPR 1639/68) — load only when submerged.
  • ✓The spearfisher may NOT gather corals, crustaceans or molluscs — the second paragraph of the same article (art. 128-bis DPR 1639/68; the same rule in D.M. 249/1987, art. 2). BUT cephalopods are EXCLUDED: octopus, cuttlefish and squid may be taken — the exception is kept in terms by the official guidance (circolare 6227201 of 23.07.1987). Mussels — up to 3 kg per person per day, but only with the Capo del Compartimento Marittimo's authorisation. The 5 kg daily cap counts EVERYTHING taken that day (D.Lgs 4/2012, art. 13-octies c. 4, as replaced by L. 75/2026).
  • ✓You MAY carry a speargun and a breathing apparatus on the same boat — but at most ONE cylinder of up to 10 L per vessel, and using it to fish is prohibited (art. 128-ter DPR 1639/68). While you are down, at least one person must stay aboard ready to intervene, and there must be a rope long enough to recover the diver.
  • ✓Sale of recreational catch is PROHIBITED (EU control regime, Reg. CE 1224/2009).
  • ✓The 5 kg/person daily cap IS in force and carries a fine: €500–3 000 up to 10 kg, €2 000–12 000 up to 50 kg, €12 000–50 000 above (D.Lgs 4/2012, art. 13-octies c. 4, as replaced by Law 21 Apr 2026 no. 75). Exception: a single fish heavier than 5 kg. Recovery-plan species and bluefin tuna: +1/3 (c. 5).
  • ⛔ Date mussels (Lithophaga lithophaga) — TOTAL BAN: fishing, possession, transport, sale (D.M. 16/10/1998; EU-protected). Never touch.
Safety protocol
  • Sets: watch the wave trains ≥15 min before entering; Hmax ≈ 2×Hs, the wash can run 50 m past the foam line. A lull >10 min with period >12 s = a big set «overdue», do NOT enter; enter right after a full set passes and re-check at minute 30.
  • Exit FIRST: find your exit AND a backup before entering. On a rocky/boulder shore a 0.5 m rise in swell can make the exit impossible — getting pinned/unable to climb out is the main killer.
  • Headland rip: prominent points often have a permanent topographic rip regardless of the model — locate it, enter/exit on the windward side, never swim against it.
  • Cold: wetsuit per the SST chip; the first shiver = a metabolic surge and a drop in breath-hold → get out at the first steady shiver. Cap the session at 45–60 min below 15 °C.
  • Solo discipline: buoy up; tell someone the spot and exit time; conservative breath-hold (never push it in cold/murky/surfy water); visibility <3 m — don't enter.
  • Afternoon wind: on many coasts the wind builds from midday — plan to be out of the water by midday; the chop builds — get out.
  • UV 11:00–15:00 (UVI ≥6): sunscreen and cover up on the surface interval.
  • Solo is a fundamental risk (hypoxic blackout with no buddy). Any doubt = No-go.

Spearfishing in Tropea: spots, seasons and rules

Spearfishing in Tropea should stay with the three named marks. Santa Maria dell'Isola is the town rock by the beach, with clear water, sea bream and seabass, but it is west-open and close to bathers. Scoglio Ercole/La Rossa is a reef west of town with grouper and sea bream over rock-sand drops. Vadaro/Galea off Parghelia lists grouper, dentex and conger in calm water. Capo Vaticano is not one of the listed spots. The SIAN declaration is required, but it is not a licence.

TL;DR

  • Tropea has three listed marks, not a broad Capo Vaticano catalogue: Santa Maria dell'Isola, Scoglio Ercole/La Rossa and Vadaro/Galea.
  • The coast is west-facing, so swell and summer beach pressure can matter more than the short swim to the rock.
  • Italy has no paid spearfishing licence, but the free MASAF SIAN/SPID declaration is mandatory and is not a licence.
  • Use apnea only, daylight only, age 16+, mandatory buoy, 500 m from beaches with bathers, about 5 kg per day and max 1 grouper nationally.

Where can you spearfish in Tropea?

The city list is short: three rock marks, no formal safety grade and no maximum spot depth. Check west swell, exit, beach users and legal distance before thinking about fish. The wider Costa degli Dei does not turn every rock into a confirmed spearfishing mark.

    Can you spearfish at Capo Vaticano?

    Capo Vaticano is not listed as a Tropea spot. The listed marks are Santa Maria dell'Isola, La Rossa and Vadaro/Galea. If you move toward Capo Vaticano, treat it as a separate local check for access, bathing zones and any harbour or municipal restrictions. Do not stretch the Tropea notes to cover a different headland.

    What fish can you spearfish in Tropea?

    The local notes name sea bream, seabass, grouper, dentex and conger.
