window: The 500 m from used beaches is measured from the water's edge, and here the shore is 0 m from the mark: in bathing season do the arithmetic before getting in. Breathing apparatus is prohibited: you go down on breath-hold and nothing else. If a stretch is closed, it is closed: there is no local version of the rule. At Cetara a short legal window beats a long questionable one.
tide: The right question on this coast is not what the tide is doing but what swell has been through. The current you will find towards the southwest will nearly always be wind-driven and not tidal. At Cetara the local currents depend more on the shape of the bottom than on the hour. Do not wait for the right tide: wait for the right sea.
shelter: With an exposure of 218° the awkward sector runs from south to west, and outside it the day is usually saved. There is no general shelter here: there is a flank that holds in Libeccio and one that does not, and they swap as the sea turns. With wind from the southwest building, the window shuts fast: plan the way back with margin. The 110 m that separate the shore from ten metres of water tell you how much sea it takes to ruin the day.
conditions: With 200 m reached about 3100 m out, the limit of the day is set by your breath and not by the distance. With 20 m at 140 m from the entry you go from inshore water to outside water without any real transit. The best water nearly always arrives from offshore on a light Grecale. If the water gets worse while you are out, head for land rather than along the coast.
hazard: In Libeccio the point becomes the worst place on this coast to get out of the water. The surface marker is compulsory: a float with a red flag and a white diagonal stripe, visible at 300 m, and you may not go more than 50 m from the vertical below it. Keep in mind the 0 m that separate you from the coast when you decide on the last descent. At 0 m from the shore no emergency sorts itself out: come out at the first sign.
access: At Cetara the point is reached on foot, and the long part of the day is the part out of the water. The first 100 m are the murkiest, and after them the bottom starts to read. The last metre before the water is the one where people get hurt. If the sea has changed while you were under, come out at the lowest point and not at the nearest one.

window: In doubt, the order in force at Cetara is asked of the Capitaneria and not of the neighbour in the car park. Between the shore and five metres of water there are 110 m: that is the stretch you want to cover in good light. Whoever goes out in order is also defending the place for whoever comes next. A shore oriented at 145° loses the sun before sunset: take it into account for the last descent.
tide: If anything changes the level at Cetara, it is pressure and wind, not the moon. The typical range on this stretch is between twenty and forty centimetres: it opens no passages and closes none. The ten-metre line, 120 m offshore, does not move with the level: it moves with the swell. Water pushing you towards the southeast, that is towards the open sea, is the signal to come out.
shelter: In a bay like this the shelter is a few tens of metres wide, tucked against the windward point rather than in the middle of the arc, and in a hard Scirocco not even that. The shore in front of the mark faces southeast, about 145°, so everything arriving from that sector gets in unobstructed. When the swell gets in, the whole coastal strip, 110 m wide here, lifts and the clarity goes. At Cetara whoever gets in first checks, whoever gets in out of habit is trusting yesterday.
conditions: If you cannot see the bottom 110 m out, the day is over before it starts. The bottom drops straight away: the 10 m contour runs about 120 m out and the 20 m contour 210 m. With the sun high the rock reads; under cloud you have to work closer. At Cetara the good days are few and have to be taken when they come.
hazard: Coves also collect what the sea brings: lost nets and lines on the bottom. On the shoreline at Cetara the same national rules apply without discounts: breath-hold, daylight, marker in sight. The way back from 120 m out is longer than it looks once you are tired. The safety rules hold on the easy days too.
access: The entry is immediate: 10 m from the coast, measured on the OSM line. Access in a cove is easy; coming back along the coast rather less so. At Cetara the accesses change with the bathing season. From the entry point to the shore there are 10 m, and they are the metres that weigh most on the return.

window: The orders of the Capitaneria responsible for Cetara can add seasonal prohibitions, and they outrank the general rule. On a shore oriented at 136° the usable light ends before the legal hour, which stays the hour of the sun. The last stretch, the 120 m out to ten metres of water, is the one you will swim tired: put it in the day's arithmetic. The afternoon wind often closes the day before the light does.
tide: Swell from the southeast moves more water in ten minutes than the tide moves in six hours. The level barely moves: the 10 m contour stays 120 m from the shore at any hour of the day. If the current takes you past the 120 m of the ten-metre line, head straight back for land. At Cetara the level changes little, but the current towards the southeast can be noticeable in the channels.
shelter: On the point at Cetara it is the flank that gives you the shelter, not the general lie of the coast. The opening to the southeast is wide: no nearby storm is needed here, an old sea from that sector is enough. Dead swell from the southeast arrives under a clear sky and no wind at all. Alone it counts double: no shelter is worth an uncertain way back.
conditions: Here depth grows faster than distance: 360 m of swimming is worth twenty metres of water. The first stretch is nearly always the worst: you cross it and judge afterwards. Past 120 m from the shore it is the water that decides the day and not the willingness. At Cetara the inshore current shifts the murk within hours: waiting sometimes works better than moving.
hazard: On this point the way out is chosen beforehand: exposed rock does not forgive a mistake in timing. The marker has to follow you even when you are working 120 m from the shore: 50 m from the vertical below it is the legal maximum. At Cetara the conditions change faster than the forecast does. With 90 m out to five metres, the exit is short only if you decide on it in time.
access: The mark sits about 20 m from the coastline: the useful water starts practically under the shore. In Scirocco the only workable entry is the one on the opposite flank of the point. At Cetara the best place is the one you can leave without hurrying. Boots are worth more on land than in the water on this kind of entry.

window: National law sets the perimeter; the local Capitaneria orders can tighten it. With ten metres of water 340 m from the shore, the band where you meet the local orders is all of it right here. With the 320 m that separate you from five metres of water, the return in daylight is planned from the start. Note the hour you will come out before you get in: from 110 m of shore the way back always looks shorter than it is.
tide: Even at springs the band out to five metres stays 320 m wide: the level does not change the route. Between the shore and five metres of water there are 320 m, and no tide shifts that line appreciably. With current and poor clarity together, better to postpone. With the shore 110 m from the mark, the alongshore current counts for more than any table.
shelter: A mole shelters what lies behind it and worsens what lies in front: on the exposed side the swell rebounds off the blocks. The coast here runs NE–SW and opens to the northeast: that is what decides which forecast to read. If you get in as Grecale is easing, remember the sea stays up a day longer than the wind. At Cetara the old rule holds: watch the sea for ten minutes, then decide.
conditions: A slope this steep keeps the dirty strip narrow: past 340 m the sight is nearly always better. At Cetara the clarity is built on the days without swell, not on the hours without wind. With Grecale strengthening, the good window closes without warning. By 340 m from the shore you already know whether it is worth going on.
hazard: The 500 m from used beaches starts at the water's edge, which is 110 m from here: in summer it is the first calculation to make. On the blocks of a mole the swell rebounds and the blocks shift more than they look as if they would. At Cetara the real risk is not the depth: it is the combination of tiredness and swell. With Grecale building, the window shuts sooner than the forecast says.
access: You get in off the blocks carefully: they are unstable and covered in weed. The 110 m crossing is made thinking of the sea you expect on the way back, not the one you have now. At Cetara the return is planned on the afternoon swell, not on the morning one. If you do not fancy swimming the 340 m back from ten metres of water, do not go any further out.

SOLO is the biggest risk: underwater you can black out from lack of oxygen silently and fatally, with no one around. Solo is never truly «safe». Below are the best weather windows; carry a buoy, tell someone your plan and exit time, and any doubt — don't go.

✓NO paid licence, but a free MASAF REGISTRATION is mandatory (recreational sea-fishing declaration, online via SIAN/SPID, annual) — it is not a «licence».
✓Free-diving only: scuba/rebreather/hookah BANNED (art. 128-bis DPR 1639/68). The 16+ rule comes from a different act — D.Lgs 4/2012, art. 6 c. 5; handing a speargun to an under-16 is an offence (art. 13-octies c. 3 b, as replaced by L. 75/2026).
✓Night prohibited: spearfishing only from dawn to sunset (art. 129e DPR 1639/68).
✓Distances (art. 129 DPR 1639/68): ≥500 m from beaches with bathers; ≥100 m from fixed gear/set nets and from vessels anchored outside ports.
✓Buoy MANDATORY (art. 130 DPR 1639/68): float with a red flag bearing a white diagonal stripe, visible ≥300 m; the diver stays within 50 m of the buoy/support boat.
✓The speargun may not be kept armed out of the water (art. 131 DPR 1639/68) — load only when submerged.
✓The spearfisher may NOT gather corals, crustaceans or molluscs — the second paragraph of the same article (art. 128-bis DPR 1639/68; the same rule in D.M. 249/1987, art. 2). BUT cephalopods are EXCLUDED: octopus, cuttlefish and squid may be taken — the exception is kept in terms by the official guidance (circolare 6227201 of 23.07.1987). Mussels — up to 3 kg per person per day, but only with the Capo del Compartimento Marittimo's authorisation. The 5 kg daily cap counts EVERYTHING taken that day (D.Lgs 4/2012, art. 13-octies c. 4, as replaced by L. 75/2026).
✓You MAY carry a speargun and a breathing apparatus on the same boat — but at most ONE cylinder of up to 10 L per vessel, and using it to fish is prohibited (art. 128-ter DPR 1639/68). While you are down, at least one person must stay aboard ready to intervene, and there must be a rope long enough to recover the diver.
✓Sale of recreational catch is PROHIBITED (EU control regime, Reg. CE 1224/2009).
✓The 5 kg/person daily cap IS in force and carries a fine: €500–3 000 up to 10 kg, €2 000–12 000 up to 50 kg, €12 000–50 000 above (D.Lgs 4/2012, art. 13-octies c. 4, as replaced by Law 21 Apr 2026 no. 75). Exception: a single fish heavier than 5 kg. Recovery-plan species and bluefin tuna: +1/3 (c. 5).

⛔ Date mussels (Lithophaga lithophaga) — TOTAL BAN: fishing, possession, transport, sale (D.M. 16/10/1998; EU-protected). Never touch.

Safety protocol

Sets: watch the wave trains ≥15 min before entering; Hmax ≈ 2×Hs, the wash can run 50 m past the foam line. A lull >10 min with period >12 s = a big set «overdue», do NOT enter; enter right after a full set passes and re-check at minute 30.
Exit FIRST: find your exit AND a backup before entering. On a rocky/boulder shore a 0.5 m rise in swell can make the exit impossible — getting pinned/unable to climb out is the main killer.
Headland rip: prominent points often have a permanent topographic rip regardless of the model — locate it, enter/exit on the windward side, never swim against it.
Cold: wetsuit per the SST chip; the first shiver = a metabolic surge and a drop in breath-hold → get out at the first steady shiver. Cap the session at 45–60 min below 15 °C.
Solo discipline: buoy up; tell someone the spot and exit time; conservative breath-hold (never push it in cold/murky/surfy water); visibility <3 m — don't enter.
Afternoon wind: on many coasts the wind builds from midday — plan to be out of the water by midday; the chop builds — get out.
UV 11:00–15:00 (UVI ≥6): sunscreen and cover up on the surface interval.
Solo is a fundamental risk (hypoxic blackout with no buddy). Any doubt = No-go.

Spearfishing in Cetara is built around walls, rockfalls, harbour rock and small coves rather than easy beaches. The coast faces 175 degrees and the bad sector runs from 115 to 235 degrees, with 135 degrees the worst line. No plume or buoy is listed. Nearby cameras help only as visual checks; local boat traffic and the chosen headland matter more.

TL;DR

Cetara is an eastern Amalfi Coast wall-and-rockfall plan with deep water close to shore and boat traffic to manage.

The coast faces 175 degrees. The bad sector is 115-235 degrees, with 135 degrees the worst direction.

Italy requires MASAF/SIAN registration, freediving only, daylight only, buoy, 500 m from bathers, 100 m from nets and about 5 kg daily catch.
