window: The orders of the Capitaneria responsible for Cetara can add seasonal prohibitions, and they outrank the general rule. On a shore oriented at 136° the usable light ends before the legal hour, which stays the hour of the sun. The last stretch, the 120 m out to ten metres of water, is the one you will swim tired: put it in the day's arithmetic. The afternoon wind often closes the day before the light does.
tide: Swell from the southeast moves more water in ten minutes than the tide moves in six hours. The level barely moves: the 10 m contour stays 120 m from the shore at any hour of the day. If the current takes you past the 120 m of the ten-metre line, head straight back for land. At Cetara the level changes little, but the current towards the southeast can be noticeable in the channels.
shelter: On the point at Cetara it is the flank that gives you the shelter, not the general lie of the coast. The opening to the southeast is wide: no nearby storm is needed here, an old sea from that sector is enough. Dead swell from the southeast arrives under a clear sky and no wind at all. Alone it counts double: no shelter is worth an uncertain way back.
conditions: Here depth grows faster than distance: 360 m of swimming is worth twenty metres of water. The first stretch is nearly always the worst: you cross it and judge afterwards. Past 120 m from the shore it is the water that decides the day and not the willingness. At Cetara the inshore current shifts the murk within hours: waiting sometimes works better than moving.
hazard: On this point the way out is chosen beforehand: exposed rock does not forgive a mistake in timing. The marker has to follow you even when you are working 120 m from the shore: 50 m from the vertical below it is the legal maximum. At Cetara the conditions change faster than the forecast does. With 90 m out to five metres, the exit is short only if you decide on it in time.
access: The mark sits about 20 m from the coastline: the useful water starts practically under the shore. In Scirocco the only workable entry is the one on the opposite flank of the point. At Cetara the best place is the one you can leave without hurrying. Boots are worth more on land than in the water on this kind of entry.
