window: Spearfishing on breath-hold is allowed by day; at night it is banned under DPR 1639/1968. At San Felice Circeo the bathing season changes the usable distances far more than the sea ever does. With the 260 m that separate you from five metres of water, the return in daylight is planned from the start. If a stretch is closed, it is closed: there is no local version of the rule.
tide: In practice the tide does not enter the decision here: the wind of the last few hours does. The useful figure is not the hour of low water but the direction of the inshore current. At San Felice Circeo the tide calendar is no substitute for reading the sea. The ten-metre line, 780 m offshore, does not move with the level: it moves with the swell.
shelter: There is no general shelter here: there is a flank that holds in Scirocco and one that does not, and they swap as the sea turns. The shore in front of the mark faces southeast, about 124°, so everything arriving from that sector gets in unobstructed. At San Felice Circeo the difference between a bad day and a good one is a hundred metres of coast, not an hour of waiting. With the wind from the northwest at your back you can work; with the swell from the southeast in your face you look and go home.
conditions: The outside water arrives when the wind from the northwest pushes it in; with an old sea it stays offshore for days. The ground is long: the 20 m contour sits about 1400 m from the shore and the 10 m contour 780 m. The best water nearly always arrives from offshore on a light Maestrale. At San Felice Circeo the good days are few and have to be taken when they come.
hazard: The swell rebounding off the wall of the cape makes confused water exactly where you get out. At San Felice Circeo, as along the whole Italian coast, the surface marker and the 50 m radius are not negotiable. The way back from 780 m out is longer than it looks once you are tired. At 110 m from the shore no emergency sorts itself out: come out at the first sign.
access: The entry on the cape is chosen by looking at where the water leans instead of hitting. Between the coast and the mark there are 110 m of water, to be counted twice, out and back. At San Felice Circeo the return is planned on the afternoon swell, not on the morning one. With Scirocco strengthening the exit is brought forward, not discussed.

window: Between the shore and five metres of water there are 550 m: that is the stretch you want to cover in good light. With ten metres of water 620 m from the shore, the band where you meet the local orders is all of it right here. At San Felice Circeo a short legal window beats a long questionable one. Note the hour you will come out before you get in: from 0 m of shore the way back always looks shorter than it is.
tide: In the Mediterranean the tide is not the figure that decides the day, and it is better to know that before going looking for tables. Even at springs the band out to five metres stays 550 m wide: the level does not change the route. With the shore 0 m from the mark, the alongshore current counts for more than any table. The way back, 550 m to the five-metre band, is decided beforehand and not on the way.
shelter: The rock of the point throws back what it receives, and that return is what makes the exposed flank uncomfortable even in a small sea. At San Felice Circeo this stretch is oriented at 251°, and in a hard Ponente the swell reaches right in under the shore. The 620 m that separate the shore from ten metres of water tell you how much sea it takes to ruin the day. If the swell starts working inside the 550 m of coastal strip, the session is over.
conditions: At San Felice Circeo the clarity is built on the days without swell, not on the hours without wind. On a medium slope the murky inshore strip usually ends well before 980 m. Judge the colour from above before you get wet: from inside you lose the comparison. Past 620 m from the shore it is the water that decides the day and not the willingness.
hazard: On the shoreline at San Felice Circeo the same national rules apply without discounts: breath-hold, daylight, marker in sight. In Ponente the point becomes the worst place on this coast to get out of the water. With 550 m out to five metres, the exit is short only if you decide on it in time. If you feel out of place, you are out of place: come out.
access: The distance from the shore, 0 m, is minimal: the limit is set by the sea and not by the route. At San Felice Circeo the point is reached on foot, and the long part of the day is the part out of the water. The last stretch back to land, 0 m, is always done with less breath than you expected. Count the 550 m that separate you from the five-metre contour: they are the measure of the way back.

At San Felice Circeo it is better to know the prohibition than to discover it from a fine. A shore oriented at 314° loses the sun before sunset: take it into account for the last descent.
tide: At San Felice Circeo the tidal cycle shows in the thread of current and not in the level of the water. The level barely moves: the 10 m contour stays 620 m from the shore at any hour of the day. If the current takes you past the 620 m of the ten-metre line, head straight back for land. A surge pushed by Maestrale can raise the level more than the tide itself.
shelter: The head of the cove is the most protected part and the murkiest one at the same time, and you almost always choose between the two. With an exposure of 314° the awkward sector runs from west to north, and outside it the day is usually saved. When the swell gets in, the whole coastal strip, 780 m wide here, lifts and the clarity goes. At San Felice Circeo the old rule holds: watch the sea for ten minutes, then decide.
conditions: Getting twenty metres under you takes about 880 m of swimming, so it pays to get in already decided on where to go. If you cannot see the bottom 780 m out, the day is over before it starts. Do not judge the day by the first five minutes: judge it by the first clean stretch. At San Felice Circeo the inshore current shifts the murk within hours: waiting sometimes works better than moving.
hazard: Date mussels and protected species are not to be touched, in any quantity and in any season. In an inlet the murky water hides the bottom and whatever has ended up on it. At San Felice Circeo the real risk is not the depth: it is the combination of tiredness and swell. With Maestrale building, the window shuts sooner than the forecast says.
access: With the shore 10 m away and five metres of water at 780 m, the band to cross is a short one. In a cove you normally get in off the low shore at the head of the bay, where the water is calmer. With swell on the entry, change the spot instead of insisting. At San Felice Circeo many accesses cross private property: if it is signed, look for another one.

✓NO paid licence, but a free MASAF REGISTRATION is mandatory (recreational sea-fishing declaration, online via SIAN/SPID, annual) — it is not a «licence».
✓Free-diving only: scuba/rebreather/hookah BANNED (art. 128-bis DPR 1639/68). The 16+ rule comes from a different act — D.Lgs 4/2012, art. 6 c. 5; handing a speargun to an under-16 is an offence (art. 13-octies c. 3 b, as replaced by L. 75/2026).
✓Night prohibited: spearfishing only from dawn to sunset (art. 129e DPR 1639/68).
✓Distances (art. 129 DPR 1639/68): ≥500 m from beaches with bathers; ≥100 m from fixed gear/set nets and from vessels anchored outside ports.
✓Buoy MANDATORY (art. 130 DPR 1639/68): float with a red flag bearing a white diagonal stripe, visible ≥300 m; the diver stays within 50 m of the buoy/support boat.
✓The speargun may not be kept armed out of the water (art. 131 DPR 1639/68) — load only when submerged.
✓The spearfisher may NOT gather corals, crustaceans or molluscs — the second paragraph of the same article (art. 128-bis DPR 1639/68; the same rule in D.M. 249/1987, art. 2). BUT cephalopods are EXCLUDED: octopus, cuttlefish and squid may be taken — the exception is kept in terms by the official guidance (circolare 6227201 of 23.07.1987). Mussels — up to 3 kg per person per day, but only with the Capo del Compartimento Marittimo's authorisation. The 5 kg daily cap counts EVERYTHING taken that day (D.Lgs 4/2012, art. 13-octies c. 4, as replaced by L. 75/2026).
✓You MAY carry a speargun and a breathing apparatus on the same boat — but at most ONE cylinder of up to 10 L per vessel, and using it to fish is prohibited (art. 128-ter DPR 1639/68). While you are down, at least one person must stay aboard ready to intervene, and there must be a rope long enough to recover the diver.
✓Sale of recreational catch is PROHIBITED (EU control regime, Reg. CE 1224/2009).
✓The 5 kg/person daily cap IS in force and carries a fine: €500–3 000 up to 10 kg, €2 000–12 000 up to 50 kg, €12 000–50 000 above (D.Lgs 4/2012, art. 13-octies c. 4, as replaced by Law 21 Apr 2026 no. 75). Exception: a single fish heavier than 5 kg. Recovery-plan species and bluefin tuna: +1/3 (c. 5).

⛔ Date mussels (Lithophaga lithophaga) — TOTAL BAN: fishing, possession, transport, sale (D.M. 16/10/1998; EU-protected). Never touch.

Safety protocol

Sets: watch the wave trains ≥15 min before entering; Hmax ≈ 2×Hs, the wash can run 50 m past the foam line. A lull >10 min with period >12 s = a big set «overdue», do NOT enter; enter right after a full set passes and re-check at minute 30.
Exit FIRST: find your exit AND a backup before entering. On a rocky/boulder shore a 0.5 m rise in swell can make the exit impossible — getting pinned/unable to climb out is the main killer.
Headland rip: prominent points often have a permanent topographic rip regardless of the model — locate it, enter/exit on the windward side, never swim against it.
Cold: wetsuit per the SST chip; the first shiver = a metabolic surge and a drop in breath-hold → get out at the first steady shiver. Cap the session at 45–60 min below 15 °C.
Solo discipline: buoy up; tell someone the spot and exit time; conservative breath-hold (never push it in cold/murky/surfy water); visibility <3 m — don't enter.
Afternoon wind: on many coasts the wind builds from midday — plan to be out of the water by midday; the chop builds — get out.
UV 11:00–15:00 (UVI ≥6): sunscreen and cover up on the surface interval.
Solo is a fundamental risk (hypoxic blackout with no buddy). Any doubt = No-go.
