The catch limit is 5 kg per person per day and the catch may not be sold. With ten metres of water 1100 m from the shore, the band where you meet the local orders is all of it right here. At Isola d'Elba Sud in summer the bathing strip changes the usable distances completely. In doubt, ask the local Capitaneria beforehand and not afterwards.

Tide tables here explain a local current more often than they choose an hour. High water pushed by Scirocco counts for more than a spring tide. In narrow channels the current accelerates even on the smallest range. At Isola d'Elba Sud the sea tells you the time better than any table.
shelter
The channel between the rock and the coast is the part that settles first and the part that turns awkward last. With an exposure of 114° the awkward sector runs from east to south, and outside it the day is usually saved. The strip between the shore and the 5 m contour, about 980 m here, is the first to churn and the last to clear. With Scirocco building, shorten the session instead of lengthening the route.
conditions
Look at the colour before you go down: full green is workable, milky brown is not. The distance to twenty metres, 1400 m, makes chasing depth pointless: work the structures close in instead. In Scirocco the suspension stays inshore; in Maestrale it is gone in half a day. At Isola d'Elba Sud the good days are few and have to be taken when they come.
hazard
Detached rocks set up local currents that accelerate in the channel. The marker has to follow you even when you are working 1100 m from the shore: 50 m from the vertical below it is the legal maximum. At Isola d'Elba Sud the conditions change faster than the forecast does. On breath-hold there is only one rule: never alone beyond your own limits.
access
In Scirocco the crossing out to the shoal is worth thinking about twice, because on the way back you will have it against you. The first 980 m are the murkiest, and after them the bottom starts to read. At Isola d'Elba Sud many accesses cross private property: if it is signed, look for another one. Whoever gets in first tells the others what they found.

Every session has to be marked at the surface: without a marker you are not in order, quite apart from not being seen. At Isola d'Elba Sud as anywhere else, the hours of the session are the hours of the sun. Note the hour you will come out before you get in: from 40 m of shore the way back always looks shorter than it is. With Scirocco forecast to strengthen it pays to go earlier rather than to stay longer.
tide
The current you will find towards the southeast will nearly always be wind-driven and not tidal. If anything changes the level at Isola d'Elba Sud, it is pressure and wind, not the moon. A steady current tires you more than a short wave. In a hard Scirocco the water piles up inshore and drains away sideways.
shelter
You are in the lee in Maestrale; the moment the wind goes southeast, the water under the shore dirties. A headland gathers sea from a wide sector, so yesterday's swell counts for as much as today's wind from southeast. At Isola d'Elba Sud whoever gets in first checks, whoever gets in out of habit is trusting yesterday. If you get in as Scirocco is easing, remember the sea stays up a day longer than the wind.
conditions
With 100 m reached about 940 m out, the limit of the day is set by your breath and not by the distance. Here depth grows faster than distance: 120 m of swimming is worth twenty metres of water. After three calm days the water at Isola d'Elba Sud is a different water. Ground you cannot read is ground you leave alone.
hazard
The daily limit is 5 kg per person and the catch may not be sold. In Scirocco the point becomes the worst place on this coast to get out of the water. At 40 m from the shore no emergency sorts itself out: come out at the first sign. Going back along the coast is nearly always safer than going back direct.
access
The walk out along the point is short; the problem is the last metre. The entry is immediate: 40 m from the coast, measured on the OSM line. In a hard Scirocco the windward exit becomes unusable: check an alternative. An access that is comfortable in a flat sea can be unusable half an hour later.

At Isola d'Elba Sud the bathing season changes the usable distances far more than the sea ever does. Between the shore and five metres of water there are 270 m: that is the stretch you want to cover in good light. The last stretch, the 310 m out to ten metres of water, is the one you will swim tired: put it in the day's arithmetic. If there are people in the water the question is not the law but common sense: move.
tide
The tables, if anything, explain an odd current at the end of the day. Between the shore and five metres of water there are 270 m, and no tide shifts that line appreciably. At Isola d'Elba Sud the tide calendar is no substitute for reading the sea. The ten-metre line, 310 m offshore, does not move with the level: it moves with the swell.
shelter
The coast here runs SE–NW and opens to the southwest: that is what decides which forecast to read. In Libeccio the detached rocks break the swell but hand it back confused, and that crossed sea tires you more than a clean wave. At Isola d'Elba Sud the old rule holds: watch the sea for ten minutes, then decide. When the swell gets in, the whole coastal strip, 270 m wide here, lifts and the clarity goes.
conditions
At Isola d'Elba Sud the clarity is built on the days without swell, not on the hours without wind. The steepness of the ground, twenty metres at 360 m, is what makes this entry usable even with little time. Even green water is workable; white streaks are suspension that will not clear. Past 310 m from the shore it is the water that decides the day and not the willingness.
hazard
At Isola d'Elba Sud, as along the whole Italian coast, the surface marker and the 50 m radius are not negotiable. In Libeccio the passage between the shoal and the coast becomes the most dangerous part of the route. Go down less deep than you could: the margin is the only real safety. The way back from 310 m out is longer than it looks once you are tired.
access
Towards the rock it pays to start from the nearest point of the coast, not from the most comfortable one. With the shore 20 m away and five metres of water at 270 m, the band to cross is a short one. Count the 270 m that separate you from the five-metre contour: they are the measure of the way back. If you do not fancy swimming the 310 m back from ten metres of water, do not go any further out.

SOLO is the biggest risk: underwater you can black out from lack of oxygen silently and fatally, with no one around. Solo is never truly «safe». Below are the best weather windows; carry a buoy, tell someone your plan and exit time, and any doubt — don't go.

Law
  • ✓NO paid licence, but a free MASAF REGISTRATION is mandatory (recreational sea-fishing declaration, online via SIAN/SPID, annual) — it is not a «licence».
  • ✓Free-diving only: scuba/rebreather/hookah BANNED (art. 128-bis DPR 1639/68). The 16+ rule comes from a different act — D.Lgs 4/2012, art. 6 c. 5; handing a speargun to an under-16 is an offence (art. 13-octies c. 3 b, as replaced by L. 75/2026).
  • ✓Night prohibited: spearfishing only from dawn to sunset (art. 129e DPR 1639/68).
  • ✓Distances (art. 129 DPR 1639/68): ≥500 m from beaches with bathers; ≥100 m from fixed gear/set nets and from vessels anchored outside ports.
  • ✓Buoy MANDATORY (art. 130 DPR 1639/68): float with a red flag bearing a white diagonal stripe, visible ≥300 m; the diver stays within 50 m of the buoy/support boat.
  • ✓The speargun may not be kept armed out of the water (art. 131 DPR 1639/68) — load only when submerged.
  • ✓The spearfisher may NOT gather corals, crustaceans or molluscs — the second paragraph of the same article (art. 128-bis DPR 1639/68; the same rule in D.M. 249/1987, art. 2). BUT cephalopods are EXCLUDED: octopus, cuttlefish and squid may be taken — the exception is kept in terms by the official guidance (circolare 6227201 of 23.07.1987). Mussels — up to 3 kg per person per day, but only with the Capo del Compartimento Marittimo's authorisation. The 5 kg daily cap counts EVERYTHING taken that day (D.Lgs 4/2012, art. 13-octies c. 4, as replaced by L. 75/2026).
  • ✓You MAY carry a speargun and a breathing apparatus on the same boat — but at most ONE cylinder of up to 10 L per vessel, and using it to fish is prohibited (art. 128-ter DPR 1639/68). While you are down, at least one person must stay aboard ready to intervene, and there must be a rope long enough to recover the diver.
  • ✓Sale of recreational catch is PROHIBITED (EU control regime, Reg. CE 1224/2009).
  • ✓The 5 kg/person daily cap IS in force and carries a fine: €500–3 000 up to 10 kg, €2 000–12 000 up to 50 kg, €12 000–50 000 above (D.Lgs 4/2012, art. 13-octies c. 4, as replaced by Law 21 Apr 2026 no. 75). Exception: a single fish heavier than 5 kg. Recovery-plan species and bluefin tuna: +1/3 (c. 5).
  • ⛔ Date mussels (Lithophaga lithophaga) — TOTAL BAN: fishing, possession, transport, sale (D.M. 16/10/1998; EU-protected). Never touch.
Safety protocol
  • Sets: watch the wave trains ≥15 min before entering; Hmax ≈ 2×Hs, the wash can run 50 m past the foam line. A lull >10 min with period >12 s = a big set «overdue», do NOT enter; enter right after a full set passes and re-check at minute 30.
  • Exit FIRST: find your exit AND a backup before entering. On a rocky/boulder shore a 0.5 m rise in swell can make the exit impossible — getting pinned/unable to climb out is the main killer.
  • Headland rip: prominent points often have a permanent topographic rip regardless of the model — locate it, enter/exit on the windward side, never swim against it.
  • Cold: wetsuit per the SST chip; the first shiver = a metabolic surge and a drop in breath-hold → get out at the first steady shiver. Cap the session at 45–60 min below 15 °C.
  • Solo discipline: buoy up; tell someone the spot and exit time; conservative breath-hold (never push it in cold/murky/surfy water); visibility <3 m — don't enter.
  • Afternoon wind: on many coasts the wind builds from midday — plan to be out of the water by midday; the chop builds — get out.
  • UV 11:00–15:00 (UVI ≥6): sunscreen and cover up on the surface interval.
  • Solo is a fundamental risk (hypoxic blackout with no buddy). Any doubt = No-go.

Spearfishing in Isola d'Elba Sud: spots, seasons and rules

Spearfishing on South Elba is a calm-water wall plan. Scoglio del Remaiolo has current and a wall to about 70 m, Isola Corbella has a slope and 60 m drop sheltered from the Maestrale, and Punta dei Ripalti is open to Sirocco with amberjack on deeper caps. Capoliveri and Portoferraio webcams help, but the legal and exit checks still happen locally.

TL;DR

  • South Elba is wall, current, and wind reading: Remaiolo, Corbella, and Ripalti are not casual entries.
  • Avoid the 135-225 degree sector, worst near 170 degrees; Sirocco and south sea close the plan.
  • The Fondali dell'Isola d'Elba Natura 2000 overlay is not automatically no-take, but local rules must be checked.

When are conditions best on South Elba?

Pick real calm. The coast faces south, with 135-225 degrees as the bad sector and 170 degrees as the worst direction. Italy rules apply: free MASAF declaration, apnea only from age 16, no night spearfishing, buoy within 50 m, 500 m from bathers, 100 m from nets or anchored vessels, and about 5 kg daily catch.

    About 5 kg per person, or one heavier fish.
