The verdict comes from seven water factors and hard safety gates — not ten tabs. Go or stay.

How we score the water

Our own model

Our own forecast engine — not a third-party widget. It weighs these water factors into one go-or-stay verdict for this coast; the 0–10 dial is that verdict, read out as a number.

01
Swell & wave memory
Height, period and direction of the swell, plus the wake of recent storms — an old storm still stirs the water, and the engine remembers.
02
Wind & gusts
Speed and gusts, hour by hour — wind speed and an onshore push chop the surface and cut visibility.
03
Tide phase
Timing and range of the tide, calibrated per coast — big spring tides pull the verdict toward caution.
04
Water temperature
Sea-surface temperature — sharply cold water vetoes a green verdict.
05
Currents & outflow
Direction and drift of the current — it pushes you, and it drags turbid coastal water across where you dive.
06
Rain runoff & air clarity
Rain muddies the water inshore through land runoff, while fog and haze cut visibility at the surface.
07
Coast shape & exposure
How the coast faces the swell — a sheltered cove keeps the water clean; an exposed, head-on point takes a penalty.

Safety gates

  • Thunderstorm forecast — an instant red, no exceptions.
  • An official warning (MeteoAlarm / IPMA) — yellow, or red for the higher ranks.
  • Missing input data — a would-be green is capped to yellow rather than overstated.
  • Strong disagreement between forecast models — a green day is pulled back to yellow.
  • Night hours — where night spearfishing is banned by law the window is forced red; where it is legal (Australia outside NSW, New Zealand, South Africa) it is capped at yellow, never green.

It all folds into a single 0–10 score and one verdict: go or stay.

A forecast, not a guarantee — the sea has the last word.

The water column

Visibility and what drives it — post-storm clearing, river plume, temperature and the thermocline.

What it is

A marine instrument,
go / no-go for solo hunting.

spearo.app folds wind, wave, swell period, visibility, tides, water temperature and risk into a single verdict — go to the spot or not. It computes 7 days ahead from open marine models (Open-Meteo, IPMA), with no sign-up and no accounts. Built for solo spearfishing off the rocks, where any mistake costs dearly.

Now live: 3016 spots across 406 stretches of coast — mainland Portugal, Madeira and the Azores.

The forecast is the plan.
The call is on the rock.

The models set the window. Whether you go in is read only at the water: count the sets, watch the surge on the entry. If in doubt, you don't get in.

The useful day is the one where permission, light and sea fall in the same window. DPR 1639/1968 dates from 1968 and is still the reference text: it is not a historical detail. Arrive with time to look the place over before getting in. At Genova Nervi it is better to know the prohibition than to discover it from a fine.
tide
The tide chapter on this coast is marginal, though not entirely absent. High water pushed by Ostro counts for more than a spring tide. With the shore 110 m from the mark, the alongshore current counts for more than any table. At Genova Nervi the sea tells you the time better than any table.
shelter
Over the cap of a shoal the swell stands up before it reaches the shore: what looks flat from land can break over the top. The shore in front of the mark faces south, about 173°, so everything arriving from that sector gets in unobstructed. At Genova Nervi the difference between a bad day and a good one is a hundred metres of coast, not an hour of waiting. If the entry is being hit, walk round instead of swimming across.
conditions
The transit out to the good ground is long enough that it has to be counted on the way back too. At Genova Nervi the clarity is built on the days without swell, not on the hours without wind. In poor visibility keep your own float in sight at all times. Even green water is workable; white streaks are suspension that will not clear.
hazard
Date mussels and protected species are not to be touched, in any quantity and in any season. The danger of an isolated rock is the distance from land, not the depth. Hurrying at the exit is the commonest cause of injuries on the rock. The way back from 380 m out is longer than it looks once you are tired.
access
The mark stands off the shore by about 110 m: here the access starts with a crossing. Towards the rock it pays to start from the nearest point of the coast, not from the most comfortable one. If an access is closed, that is not an invitation to go through anyway. Better a hundred metres more on foot than the wrong entry.

Slabs and boulders along the promenade, small cave around 15 m; sea bream, mullet, sea bass.

At Genova Nervi as anywhere else, the hours of the session are the hours of the sun. The 500 m from used beaches is measured from the water's edge, and here the shore is 20 m from the mark: in bathing season do the arithmetic before getting in. The bathing season narrows the options: out of season the stretch is whole again. The rules change from one municipality to the next more than you would think.
tide
Low water uncovers nothing useful on this stretch of coast. At Genova Nervi nobody plans an outing around the tide, and they are right not to. If the current takes you past the 600 m of the ten-metre line, head straight back for land. In narrow channels the current accelerates even on the smallest range.
shelter
An open coastal front has no shelter of its own: the shelter comes from the orientation and from nothing else. The exposure measured on the coastline is 168°, that is full south: in Ostro there is no shelter here, in Tramontana the water flattens. The strip between the shore and the 5 m contour, about 220 m here, is the first to churn and the last to clear. Still water behind a shelter can hide current just outside it.
conditions
Getting twenty metres under you takes about 750 m of swimming, so it pays to get in already decided on where to go. With 100 m reached about 5100 m out, the limit of the day is set by your breath and not by the distance. Come back with margin: tiredness takes your judgement before it takes your strength. In the coastal band the clarity changes hour by hour with whatever wind is pushing.
hazard
Breath-hold alone is not prohibited, but it doubles every consequence: plan accordingly. On an open front the risk builds slowly: the sea grows while you are turned the other way. At Genova Nervi the real risk is not the depth: it is the combination of tiredness and swell. If you find lost gear — weights, lines, nets — take it out: the next thing it snags may be yours.
access
The access is off the coastal front, at the first workable point you find. From here to the 5 m contour is about 220 m, and it pays to measure them on the way out so as not to find them long on the way back. Look at the exit point before getting in: from inside everything looks the same. Leave the place as you found it.

Rock and sand, ambush in murky water; south-facing, workable with easterly wind.

National law sets the perimeter; the local Capitaneria orders can tighten it. On breath-hold, by day, with the marker in sight: the rest is local variation. If there are people in the water the question is not the law but common sense: move. The last stretch, the 180 m out to ten metres of water, is the one you will swim tired: put it in the day's arithmetic.
tide
The only range you notice is the one the wind pushes, not the astronomical one. In practice the tide does not enter the decision here: the wind of the last few hours does. The inshore current is read off your float, not off the table. At Genova Nervi the tide calendar is no substitute for reading the sea.
shelter
The bay works like a funnel: with the swell in the mouth the water inside dirties, and it stays dirty after the wind has dropped. Look at the opening to the west before you look at the wind: in Ponente the sea builds in a few hours, in Levante it comes down just as fast. When the swell gets in, the whole coastal strip, 100 m wide here, lifts and the clarity goes. Safety here is decided by the swell and not by the depth.
conditions
The useful band lies between the 180 m of the ten-metre line and the 800 m of the twenty: that strip is where you work. The outside water arrives when the wind from the east pushes it in; with an old sea it stays offshore for days. Past 180 m from the shore it is the water that decides the day and not the willingness. The best water nearly always arrives from offshore on a light Levante.
hazard
The mouth of the bay is where the swell concentrates and where getting back becomes difficult. Under sixteen you do not handle a speargun: the rule is national. Blackout gives no warning, and the margins shrink when you are tired. At 20 m from the shore no emergency sorts itself out: come out at the first sign.
access
The entry off the beach is the most comfortable and the murkiest: it pays to cross the dirty band straight away. The mark is right against the shore, 20 m from the coastline, and ten metres of water is about 180 m out. At Genova Nervi the return is planned on the afternoon swell, not on the morning one. The last stretch back to land, 20 m, is always done with less breath than you expected.

Rocky patches near the river mouth; mixed bottom, urban training close to shore.

SOLO is the biggest risk: underwater you can black out from lack of oxygen silently and fatally, with no one around. Solo is never truly «safe». Below are the best weather windows; carry a buoy, tell someone your plan and exit time, and any doubt — don't go.

Law
  • ✓NO paid licence, but a free MASAF REGISTRATION is mandatory (recreational sea-fishing declaration, online via SIAN/SPID, annual) — it is not a «licence».
  • ✓Free-diving only: scuba/rebreather/hookah BANNED (art. 128-bis DPR 1639/68). The 16+ rule comes from a different act — D.Lgs 4/2012, art. 6 c. 5; handing a speargun to an under-16 is an offence (art. 13-octies c. 3 b, as replaced by L. 75/2026).
  • ✓Night prohibited: spearfishing only from dawn to sunset (art. 129e DPR 1639/68).
  • ✓Distances (art. 129 DPR 1639/68): ≥500 m from beaches with bathers; ≥100 m from fixed gear/set nets and from vessels anchored outside ports.
  • ✓Buoy MANDATORY (art. 130 DPR 1639/68): float with a red flag bearing a white diagonal stripe, visible ≥300 m; the diver stays within 50 m of the buoy/support boat.
  • ✓The speargun may not be kept armed out of the water (art. 131 DPR 1639/68) — load only when submerged.
  • ✓The spearfisher may NOT gather corals, crustaceans or molluscs — the second paragraph of the same article (art. 128-bis DPR 1639/68; the same rule in D.M. 249/1987, art. 2). BUT cephalopods are EXCLUDED: octopus, cuttlefish and squid may be taken — the exception is kept in terms by the official guidance (circolare 6227201 of 23.07.1987). Mussels — up to 3 kg per person per day, but only with the Capo del Compartimento Marittimo's authorisation. The 5 kg daily cap counts EVERYTHING taken that day (D.Lgs 4/2012, art. 13-octies c. 4, as replaced by L. 75/2026).
  • ✓You MAY carry a speargun and a breathing apparatus on the same boat — but at most ONE cylinder of up to 10 L per vessel, and using it to fish is prohibited (art. 128-ter DPR 1639/68). While you are down, at least one person must stay aboard ready to intervene, and there must be a rope long enough to recover the diver.
  • ✓Sale of recreational catch is PROHIBITED (EU control regime, Reg. CE 1224/2009).
  • ✓The 5 kg/person daily cap IS in force and carries a fine: €500–3 000 up to 10 kg, €2 000–12 000 up to 50 kg, €12 000–50 000 above (D.Lgs 4/2012, art. 13-octies c. 4, as replaced by Law 21 Apr 2026 no. 75). Exception: a single fish heavier than 5 kg. Recovery-plan species and bluefin tuna: +1/3 (c. 5).
  • ⛔ Date mussels (Lithophaga lithophaga) — TOTAL BAN: fishing, possession, transport, sale (D.M. 16/10/1998; EU-protected). Never touch.
Safety protocol
  • Sets: watch the wave trains ≥15 min before entering; Hmax ≈ 2×Hs, the wash can run 50 m past the foam line. A lull >10 min with period >12 s = a big set «overdue», do NOT enter; enter right after a full set passes and re-check at minute 30.
  • Exit FIRST: find your exit AND a backup before entering. On a rocky/boulder shore a 0.5 m rise in swell can make the exit impossible — getting pinned/unable to climb out is the main killer.
  • Headland rip: prominent points often have a permanent topographic rip regardless of the model — locate it, enter/exit on the windward side, never swim against it.
  • Cold: wetsuit per the SST chip; the first shiver = a metabolic surge and a drop in breath-hold → get out at the first steady shiver. Cap the session at 45–60 min below 15 °C.
  • Solo discipline: buoy up; tell someone the spot and exit time; conservative breath-hold (never push it in cold/murky/surfy water); visibility <3 m — don't enter.
  • Afternoon wind: on many coasts the wind builds from midday — plan to be out of the water by midday; the chop builds — get out.
  • UV 11:00–15:00 (UVI ≥6): sunscreen and cover up on the surface interval.
  • Solo is a fundamental risk (hypoxic blackout with no buddy). Any doubt = No-go.

FAQ — spearfishing in Genova Nervi

Where can I spearfish in Genova Nervi?

Genova Nervi has rock entry points such as Nervi scogliera, Quarto dei Mille and Sturla. Urban shore of eastern Genoa: slabs and boulders along the Nervi promenade, a small cave near 15 m, rock heads at Punta Gaiassa and Scoglio Leone. Below you'll find each spot (access, shelter and hazards) and today's forecast.

When is the best season in Genova Nervi?

A Mediterranean season from late spring to autumn, peaking in summer. It opens when the SW libeccio eases and the water clears; morning or an offshore wind is the best moment.

How cold is the water in Genova Nervi?

Mediterranean: ~13 °C in winter up to ~24–25 °C in summer. A 3 mm suit in high summer, 5 mm in spring and autumn; the thermocline can leave the bottom colder.

Is Genova Nervi good for a beginner?

Intermediate: rock and cliffs with quick drop-offs, often deep close in. On calm days it's approachable in the sheltered corners; with libeccio it's for the experienced. Buoy always.

Do I need a licence in Genova Nervi?

No — in Genova Nervi there is no paid licence; a free MASAF declaration is mandatory (the recreational sea-fishing communication, online via SIAN/SPID, renewed each year), which is not a «licence». Breath-hold only (no scuba), with a marker buoy and no selling the catch. See the guide.
