The 500 m from used beaches is measured from the water's edge, and here the shore is 10 m from the mark: in bathing season do the arithmetic before getting in. With the 120 m that separate you from five metres of water, the return in daylight is planned from the start. Time spent finding out is time taken away from trouble.

There is no tidal window to wait for: you get in when the sea allows it. The level barely moves: the 10 m contour stays 350 m from the shore at any hour of the day. If the current takes you past the 350 m of the ten-metre line, head straight back for land. The ten-metre line, 350 m offshore, does not move with the level: it moves with the swell.
shelter
In a bay like this the shelter is a few tens of metres wide, tucked against the windward point rather than in the middle of the arc, and in a hard Ponente not even that. You are in the lee in Levante; the moment the wind goes west, the water under the shore dirties. When the swell gets in, the whole coastal strip, 120 m wide here, lifts and the clarity goes. At Castiglioncello the old rule holds: watch the sea for ten minutes, then decide.
conditions
The useful band lies between the 350 m of the ten-metre line and the 760 m of the twenty: that strip is where you work. If you cannot see the bottom 120 m out, the day is over before it starts. At Castiglioncello the good days are few and have to be taken when they come. In Ponente the suspension stays inshore; in Levante it is gone in half a day.
hazard
The surface marker is compulsory: a float with a red flag and a white diagonal stripe, visible at 300 m, and you may not go more than 50 m from the vertical below it. In a cove the risk is the false calm: from inside you cannot see that the sea outside has built. At sea the number to call is 1530, the Coast Guard. At Castiglioncello the conditions change faster than the forecast does.
access
In the bay you pick the sheltered side to get in and the same side to get out. With the shore 10 m away and five metres of water at 120 m, the band to cross is a short one. In a hard Ponente the windward exit becomes unusable: check an alternative. The last stretch back to land, 10 m, is always done with less breath than you expected.

Before the timing comes the compulsory declaration to MASAF: it is free, but without it you are not in order. The orders of the Capitaneria responsible for Castiglioncello can add seasonal prohibitions, and they outrank the general rule. A shore oriented at 233° loses the sun before sunset: take it into account for the last descent. The rules change from one municipality to the next more than you would think.
tide
In a hard Libeccio the level rises more than any spring tide manages. Even at springs the band out to five metres stays 110 m wide: the level does not change the route. At Castiglioncello the level changes little, but the current towards the southwest can be noticeable in the channels. The way back, 110 m to the five-metre band, is decided beforehand and not on the way.
shelter
An inlet closed between two points holds while the sea arrives across it; head on, it does not hold at all. Gusts from the northeast ruffle the surface but raise no swell: it is the fetch towards the southwest that counts. At Castiglioncello the difference between a bad day and a good one is a hundred metres of coast, not an hour of waiting. With Libeccio building, shorten the session instead of lengthening the route.
conditions
With 50 m reached about 4600 m out, the limit of the day is set by your breath and not by the distance. The slope is regular: ten metres about 270 m out, twenty at 1200 m. If the clarity drops under two metres, change area instead of insisting. At Castiglioncello it pays to come out feeling you stopped early.
hazard
With Libeccio into the mouth of the bay the water leaves through the middle and comes back along the sides: keep it in mind for the return. The 500 m from used beaches starts at the water's edge, which is 30 m from here: in summer it is the first calculation to make. At Castiglioncello floating lines are seen late: keep an eye above you as well. A day given up is never a mistake.
access
The first 110 m are the murkiest, and after them the bottom starts to read. Access in a cove is easy; coming back along the coast rather less so. At Castiglioncello the best place is the one you can leave without hurrying. Count the 110 m that separate you from the five-metre contour: they are the measure of the way back.

The timing here is set by law rather than by convenience: sunrise to sunset and nothing else. With ten metres of water 150 m from the shore, the band where you meet the local orders is all of it right here. At Castiglioncello in summer the bathing strip changes the usable distances completely. Note the hour you will come out before you get in: from 20 m of shore the way back always looks shorter than it is.
tide
The right question on this coast is not what the tide is doing but what swell has been through. The current you will find towards the southwest will nearly always be wind-driven and not tidal. With the shore 20 m from the mark, the alongshore current counts for more than any table. Water pushing you towards the southwest, that is towards the open sea, is the signal to come out.
shelter
A headland is never sheltered on both flanks at once: one face takes it and the other stays in the lee, and the day is decided by which of the two is looking at today's swell. The exposure measured on the coastline is 220°, that is full southwest: in Libeccio there is no shelter here, in Grecale the water flattens. The strip between the shore and the 5 m contour, about 120 m here, is the first to churn and the last to clear. If the swell starts working inside the 120 m of coastal strip, the session is over.
conditions
210 m of swimming is all it takes to have twenty metres under you: the slope is steep and the bottom breaks away early. At Castiglioncello the clarity is built on the days without swell, not on the hours without wind. Past 150 m from the shore it is the water that decides the day and not the willingness. By 150 m from the shore you already know whether it is worth going on.

At Castiglioncello, as along the whole Italian coast, the surface marker and the 50 m radius are not negotiable. The cape exposes you to two seas at once, and the way back can be harder than the way out. With 120 m out to five metres, the exit is short only if you decide on it in time. The way back from 150 m out is longer than it looks once you are tired.
access
At Castiglioncello the point is reached on foot, and the long part of the day is the part out of the water. The entry is immediate: 20 m from the coast, measured on the OSM line. From the entry point to the shore there are 20 m, and they are the metres that weigh most on the return. With Libeccio strengthening the exit is brought forward, not discussed.

In doubt, the order in force at Castiglioncello is asked of the Capitaneria and not of the neighbour in the car park. On a shore oriented at 260° the usable light ends before the legal hour, which stays the hour of the sun. The orders are online on the website of the Capitaneria responsible. Under a high coast the light goes before the clock says it should.
tide
At Castiglioncello the tidal cycle shows in the thread of current and not in the level of the water. Between the shore and five metres of water there are 430 m, and no tide shifts that line appreciably. With Ponente strengthening the inshore current picks up before the swell does. If you go into a channel, go in against the current and come back with it.
shelter
A headland gathers sea from a wide sector, so yesterday's swell counts for as much as today's wind from west. With an exposure of 260° the awkward sector runs from southwest to northwest, and outside it the day is usually saved. The 590 m that separate the shore from ten metres of water tell you how much sea it takes to ruin the day. Safety here is decided by the swell and not by the depth.
conditions
The good day here is not made by the depth but by the water: if you can see, you can work in five metres. The distance to twenty metres, 1500 m, makes chasing depth pointless: work the structures close in instead. At Castiglioncello the inshore current shifts the murk within hours: waiting sometimes works better than moving. Come back with margin: tiredness takes your judgement before it takes your strength.
hazard
In Ponente the point becomes the worst place on this coast to get out of the water. Under sixteen you do not handle a speargun: the rule is national. Keep in mind the 0 m that separate you from the coast when you decide on the last descent. At Castiglioncello the real risk is not the depth: it is the combination of tiredness and swell.
access
The mark sits about 0 m from the coastline: the useful water starts practically under the shore. In Ponente the only workable entry is the one on the opposite flank of the point. Carry out what you carry in, and what you find as well. At Castiglioncello many accesses cross private property: if it is signed, look for another one.

    • ✓NO paid licence, but a free MASAF REGISTRATION is mandatory (recreational sea-fishing declaration, online via SIAN/SPID, annual) — it is not a «licence».
    • ✓Free-diving only: scuba/rebreather/hookah BANNED (art. 128-bis DPR 1639/68). The 16+ rule comes from a different act — D.Lgs 4/2012, art. 6 c. 5; handing a speargun to an under-16 is an offence (art. 13-octies c. 3 b, as replaced by L. 75/2026).
    • ✓Night prohibited: spearfishing only from dawn to sunset (art. 129e DPR 1639/68).
    • ✓Distances (art. 129 DPR 1639/68): ≥500 m from beaches with bathers; ≥100 m from fixed gear/set nets and from vessels anchored outside ports.
    • ✓Buoy MANDATORY (art. 130 DPR 1639/68): float with a red flag bearing a white diagonal stripe, visible ≥300 m; the diver stays within 50 m of the buoy/support boat.
    • ✓The speargun may not be kept armed out of the water (art. 131 DPR 1639/68) — load only when submerged.
    • ✓The spearfisher may NOT gather corals, crustaceans or molluscs — the second paragraph of the same article (art. 128-bis DPR 1639/68; the same rule in D.M. 249/1987, art. 2). BUT cephalopods are EXCLUDED: octopus, cuttlefish and squid may be taken — the exception is kept in terms by the official guidance (circolare 6227201 of 23.07.1987). Mussels — up to 3 kg per person per day, but only with the Capo del Compartimento Marittimo's authorisation. The 5 kg daily cap counts EVERYTHING taken that day (D.Lgs 4/2012, art. 13-octies c. 4, as replaced by L. 75/2026).
    • ✓You MAY carry a speargun and a breathing apparatus on the same boat — but at most ONE cylinder of up to 10 L per vessel, and using it to fish is prohibited (art. 128-ter DPR 1639/68). While you are down, at least one person must stay aboard ready to intervene, and there must be a rope long enough to recover the diver.
    • ✓Sale of recreational catch is PROHIBITED (EU control regime, Reg. CE 1224/2009).
    • ✓The 5 kg/person daily cap IS in force and carries a fine: €500–3 000 up to 10 kg, €2 000–12 000 up to 50 kg, €12 000–50 000 above (D.Lgs 4/2012, art. 13-octies c. 4, as replaced by Law 21 Apr 2026 no. 75). Exception: a single fish heavier than 5 kg. Recovery-plan species and bluefin tuna: +1/3 (c. 5).
    • ⛔ Date mussels (Lithophaga lithophaga) — TOTAL BAN: fishing, possession, transport, sale (D.M. 16/10/1998; EU-protected). Never touch.
    • ⛔ Sturgeon (Acipenser sturio / naccarii) — capture BANNED (D.M. 3/5/89, D.M. 11/6/07).
    • ⛔ Dusky grouper (Epinephelus marginatus) — 45 cm, max 1 grouper/day (art.142 D.P.R.1639/68, amended by L.154/2016); fully BANNED in Sardegna & ALL .
    • ⛔ Bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus) — MASAF RecFishing authorization only: season 16 Jun–14 Oct, 1 fish/outing, min 30 kg / 115 cm.
    • ⛔ Swordfish (Xiphias gladius) — min 100 cm; seasonal closures, RecFishing declaration required.

    Rules change. Before heading out, check with MASAF (registration) and the Guardia Costiera / Capitaneria di Porto; Sicily and Sardegna add regional tightening.

    Safety protocol
    • Sets: watch the wave trains ≥15 min before entering; Hmax ≈ 2×Hs, the wash can run 50 m past the foam line. A lull >10 min with period >12 s = a big set «overdue», do NOT enter; enter right after a full set passes and re-check at minute 30.
    • Exit FIRST: find your exit AND a backup before entering. On a rocky/boulder shore a 0.5 m rise in swell can make the exit impossible — getting pinned/unable to climb out is the main killer.
    • Headland rip: prominent points often have a permanent topographic rip regardless of the model — locate it, enter/exit on the windward side, never swim against it.
    • Cold: wetsuit per the SST chip; the first shiver = a metabolic surge and a drop in breath-hold → get out at the first steady shiver. Cap the session at 45–60 min below 15 °C.
    • Solo discipline: buoy up; tell someone the spot and exit time; conservative breath-hold (never push it in cold/murky/surfy water); visibility <3 m — don't enter.
    • Afternoon wind: on many coasts the wind builds from midday — plan to be out of the water by midday; the chop builds — get out.
    • UV 11:00–15:00 (UVI ≥6): sunscreen and cover up on the surface interval.
