With ten metres of water 1300 m from the shore, the band where you meet the local orders is all of it right here. Sixteen years of age is the legal minimum for handling a speargun in the water. The last stretch, the 1300 m out to ten metres of water, is the one you will swim tired: put it in the day's arithmetic. In the dark the window shuts by law and not by choice.
tide
With a range that small the entry rock sits at the same level at any hour. At Gabicce Monte nobody plans an outing around the tide, and they are right not to. Water pushing you towards the northeast, that is towards the open sea, is the signal to come out. A surge pushed by Grecale can raise the level more than the tide itself.
shelter
In a bay like this the shelter is a few tens of metres wide, tucked against the windward point rather than in the middle of the arc, and in a hard Grecale not even that. The opening to the northeast is wide: no nearby storm is needed here, an old sea from that sector is enough. When the swell gets in, the whole coastal strip, 490 m wide here, lifts and the clarity goes. With the wind from the southwest at your back you can work; with the swell from the northeast in your face you look and go home.
conditions
With the five-metre band at 490 m and little else, the day is decided entirely by the clarity. Here the shape of the bottom is the only certain figure, and it is worth reading before you get in. At Gabicce Monte the good days are few and have to be taken when they come. With the sun high the rock reads; under cloud you have to work closer.
hazard
With Grecale into the mouth of the bay the water leaves through the middle and comes back along the sides: keep it in mind for the return. The marker has to follow you even when you are working 1300 m from the shore: 50 m from the vertical below it is the legal maximum. Work out the way back with the tiredness already factored in. At 40 m from the shore no emergency sorts itself out: come out at the first sign.
access
The first 490 m are the murkiest, and after them the bottom starts to read. At Gabicce Monte the entry at the head of the cove is the one that holds up best even in a made-up sea. An access that is comfortable in a flat sea can be unusable half an hour later. Count the 490 m that separate you from the five-metre contour: they are the measure of the way back.

Recreational catch may not be sold, in any quantity. At Gabicce Monte it is worth losing ten minutes to check the local order rather than arguing about it later. Carrying your papers costs nothing and settles everything. The moment of the day is chosen on the sea, not out of habit.
tide
Between the shore and five metres of water there are 510 m, and no tide shifts that line appreciably. Swell from the northeast moves more water in ten minutes than the tide moves in six hours. At Gabicce Monte the level changes little, but the current towards the northeast can be noticeable in the channels. A steady current tires you more than a short wave.
shelter
With an exposure of 39° the awkward sector runs from north to east, and outside it the day is usually saved. In a cove only what comes through the mouth counts: if the mouth is looking at today's sea, no shelter inside will hold. At Gabicce Monte the old rule holds: watch the sea for ten minutes, then decide. Dead swell from the northeast arrives under a clear sky and no wind at all.
conditions
Shallow by structure: 10 m is the deepest level reachable here, about 1200 m from the shore. At Gabicce Monte the clarity is built on the days without swell, not on the hours without wind. Past 1200 m from the shore it is the water that decides the day and not the willingness. In the coastal band the clarity changes hour by hour with whatever wind is pushing.
hazard
Never a loaded speargun out of the water (art. 131): you load below and unload before setting foot back on the rock. In an inlet the murky water hides the bottom and whatever has ended up on it. At Gabicce Monte the real risk is not the depth: it is the combination of tiredness and swell. Blackout gives no warning, and the margins shrink when you are tired.
access
In the bay you pick the sheltered side to get in and the same side to get out. The mark is right against the shore, 10 m from the coastline, and ten metres of water is about 1200 m out. In a hard Grecale the windward exit becomes unusable: check an alternative. At Gabicce Monte the best place is the one you can leave without hurrying.

From sunset to sunrise spearfishing is prohibited (DPR 1639/1968, art. 129): the window is entirely a daytime one. At Gabicce Monte as anywhere else, the hours of the session are the hours of the sun. The orders are online on the website of the Capitaneria responsible. With the 620 m that separate you from five metres of water, the return in daylight is planned from the start.
tide
At Gabicce Monte the tidal cycle shows in the thread of current and not in the level of the water. Tide tables here explain a local current more often than they choose an hour. If the current takes you past the 1300 m of the ten-metre line, head straight back for land. The ten-metre line, 1300 m offshore, does not move with the level: it moves with the swell.
shelter
The head of the cove is the most protected part and the murkiest one at the same time, and you almost always choose between the two. You are in the lee in Libeccio; the moment the wind goes northeast, the water under the shore dirties. At Gabicce Monte the swell forecast matters more than the wind forecast on this stretch. With wind from the northeast building, the window shuts fast: plan the way back with margin.
conditions
With 10 m reached about 1300 m out, the limit of the day is set by your breath and not by the distance. The survey puts ten metres about 1300 m from the shore and nothing deeper anywhere nearby. After three calm days the water at Gabicce Monte is a different water. Better two hours in the right water than six in the wrong one.
hazard
The daily limit is 5 kg per person and the catch may not be sold. Coves also collect what the sea brings: lost nets and lines on the bottom. With 620 m out to five metres, the exit is short only if you decide on it in time. Keep in mind the 10 m that separate you from the coast when you decide on the last descent.
access
With the shore 10 m away and five metres of water at 620 m, the band to cross is a short one. In a cove you normally get in off the low shore at the head of the bay, where the water is calmer. Respect private accesses and local prohibitions: they are the reason the stretch is still open. From the entry point to the shore there are 10 m, and they are the metres that weigh most on the return.

On a shore oriented at 194° the usable light ends before the legal hour, which stays the hour of the sun. The 500 m from used beaches is measured from the water's edge, and here the shore is 20 m from the mark: in bathing season do the arithmetic before getting in. A shore oriented at 194° loses the sun before sunset: take it into account for the last descent. Keeping to the hours is also the simplest way of having no trouble.
tide
The level barely moves: the 10 m contour stays 1200 m from the shore at any hour of the day. There is no tidal window to wait for: you get in when the sea allows it. In a hard Ostro the water piles up inshore and drains away sideways. At Gabicce Monte the tide calendar is no substitute for reading the sea.
shelter
In Ostro the detached rocks break the swell but hand it back confused, and that crossed sea tires you more than a clean wave. The shore in front of the mark faces south, about 194°, so everything arriving from that sector gets in unobstructed. The 1200 m that separate the shore from ten metres of water tell you how much sea it takes to ruin the day. A sheltered stretch is not a safe stretch: it only changes which risk you are facing.
conditions
If you cannot see the bottom 370 m out, the day is over before it starts. The 20 m contour does not pass within useful reach of this entry: the bottom here stays shallow for a long way. The best water nearly always arrives from offshore on a light Tramontana. At Gabicce Monte it pays to come out feeling you stopped early.
hazard
On the shoreline at Gabicce Monte the same national rules apply without discounts: breath-hold, daylight, marker in sight. On a shoal the swell breaks without warning: what looks flat over the top can rear up. With Ostro strengthening the margin is spent without your noticing. The way back from 1200 m out is longer than it looks once you are tired.
access
The entry is immediate: 20 m from the coast, measured on the OSM line. The crossing out to the structure is the exposed part of the day. If you do not fancy swimming the 1200 m back from ten metres of water, do not go any further out. At Gabicce Monte many accesses cross private property: if it is signed, look for another one.

  • ✓NO paid licence, but a free MASAF REGISTRATION is mandatory (recreational sea-fishing declaration, online via SIAN/SPID, annual) — it is not a «licence».
  • ✓Free-diving only: scuba/rebreather/hookah BANNED (art. 128-bis DPR 1639/68). The 16+ rule comes from a different act — D.Lgs 4/2012, art. 6 c. 5; handing a speargun to an under-16 is an offence (art. 13-octies c. 3 b, as replaced by L. 75/2026).
  • ✓Night prohibited: spearfishing only from dawn to sunset (art. 129e DPR 1639/68).
  • ✓Distances (art. 129 DPR 1639/68): ≥500 m from beaches with bathers; ≥100 m from fixed gear/set nets and from vessels anchored outside ports.
  • ✓Buoy MANDATORY (art. 130 DPR 1639/68): float with a red flag bearing a white diagonal stripe, visible ≥300 m; the diver stays within 50 m of the buoy/support boat.
  • ✓The speargun may not be kept armed out of the water (art. 131 DPR 1639/68) — load only when submerged.
  • ✓The spearfisher may NOT gather corals, crustaceans or molluscs — the second paragraph of the same article (art. 128-bis DPR 1639/68; the same rule in D.M. 249/1987, art. 2). BUT cephalopods are EXCLUDED: octopus, cuttlefish and squid may be taken — the exception is kept in terms by the official guidance (circolare 6227201 of 23.07.1987). Mussels — up to 3 kg per person per day, but only with the Capo del Compartimento Marittimo's authorisation. The 5 kg daily cap counts EVERYTHING taken that day (D.Lgs 4/2012, art. 13-octies c. 4, as replaced by L. 75/2026).
  • ✓You MAY carry a speargun and a breathing apparatus on the same boat — but at most ONE cylinder of up to 10 L per vessel, and using it to fish is prohibited (art. 128-ter DPR 1639/68). While you are down, at least one person must stay aboard ready to intervene, and there must be a rope long enough to recover the diver.
  • ✓Sale of recreational catch is PROHIBITED (EU control regime, Reg. CE 1224/2009).
  • ✓The 5 kg/person daily cap IS in force and carries a fine: €500–3 000 up to 10 kg, €2 000–12 000 up to 50 kg, €12 000–50 000 above (D.Lgs 4/2012, art. 13-octies c. 4, as replaced by Law 21 Apr 2026 no. 75). Exception: a single fish heavier than 5 kg. Recovery-plan species and bluefin tuna: +1/3 (c. 5).
  • ⛔ Date mussels (Lithophaga lithophaga) — TOTAL BAN: fishing, possession, transport, sale (D.M. 16/10/1998; EU-protected). Never touch.
Safety protocol
  • Sets: watch the wave trains ≥15 min before entering; Hmax ≈ 2×Hs, the wash can run 50 m past the foam line. A lull >10 min with period >12 s = a big set «overdue», do NOT enter; enter right after a full set passes and re-check at minute 30.
  • Exit FIRST: find your exit AND a backup before entering. On a rocky/boulder shore a 0.5 m rise in swell can make the exit impossible — getting pinned/unable to climb out is the main killer.
  • Headland rip: prominent points often have a permanent topographic rip regardless of the model — locate it, enter/exit on the windward side, never swim against it.
  • Cold: wetsuit per the SST chip; the first shiver = a metabolic surge and a drop in breath-hold → get out at the first steady shiver. Cap the session at 45–60 min below 15 °C.
  • Solo discipline: buoy up; tell someone the spot and exit time; conservative breath-hold (never push it in cold/murky/surfy water); visibility <3 m — don't enter.
  • Afternoon wind: on many coasts the wind builds from midday — plan to be out of the water by midday; the chop builds — get out.
  • UV 11:00–15:00 (UVI ≥6): sunscreen and cover up on the surface interval.
  • Solo is a fundamental risk (hypoxic blackout with no buddy). Any doubt = No-go.

Spearfishing in Gabicce Monte: spots, seasons and rules

Spearfishing around Gabicce Monte means reading low, often turbid Adriatic water under the San Bartolo cliffs. Vallugola is the clearest planning reference, but it has sediment and Bora in its face. Baia Flaminia/San Bartolo works only in settled weather; Casteldimezzo and Fiorenzuola are gravel, rock, and boulder options where visibility can vanish quickly. Keep the plan short and visual.

Choose a flat, settled day with no north-east wind. The coast faces about 60 degrees and the bad sector is 15-105 degrees, so Bora should stop the plan. Italian law still requires the free MASAF declaration, apnea only from age 16, no night fishing, a visible buoy within 50 m, 500 m from bathers, 100 m from nets or anchored vessels, and about 5 kg daily catch.
