The verdict comes from seven water factors and hard safety gates — not ten tabs. Go or stay.

How we score the water

Our own model

Our own forecast engine — not a third-party widget. It weighs these water factors into one go-or-stay verdict for this coast; the 0–10 dial is that verdict, read out as a number.

01
Swell & wave memory
Height, period and direction of the swell, plus the wake of recent storms — an old storm still stirs the water, and the engine remembers.
02
Wind & gusts
Speed and gusts, hour by hour — wind speed and an onshore push chop the surface and cut visibility.
03
Tide phase
Timing and range of the tide, calibrated per coast — big spring tides pull the verdict toward caution.
04
Water temperature
Sea-surface temperature — sharply cold water vetoes a green verdict.
05
Currents & outflow
Direction and drift of the current — it pushes you, and it drags turbid coastal water across where you dive.
06
Rain runoff & air clarity
Rain muddies the water inshore through land runoff, while fog and haze cut visibility at the surface.
07
Coast shape & exposure
How the coast faces the swell — a sheltered cove keeps the water clean; an exposed, head-on point takes a penalty.

Safety gates

  • Thunderstorm forecast — an instant red, no exceptions.
  • An official warning (MeteoAlarm / IPMA) — yellow, or red for the higher ranks.
  • Missing input data — a would-be green is capped to yellow rather than overstated.
  • Strong disagreement between forecast models — a green day is pulled back to yellow.
  • Night hours — where night spearfishing is banned by law the window is forced red; where it is legal (Australia outside NSW, New Zealand, South Africa) it is capped at yellow, never green.

It all folds into a single 0–10 score and one verdict: go or stay.

A forecast, not a guarantee — the sea has the last word.

Visibility and what drives it — post-storm clearing, river plume, temperature and the thermocline.

What it is

A marine instrument,
go / no-go for solo hunting.

spearo.app folds wind, wave, swell period, visibility, tides, water temperature and risk into a single verdict — go to the spot or not. It computes 7 days ahead from open marine models (Open-Meteo, IPMA), with no sign-up and no accounts. Built for solo spearfishing off the rocks, where any mistake costs dearly.

Now live: 3016 spots across 406 stretches of coast — mainland Portugal, Madeira and the Azores.

Capo FalconeStintino
dangerous
exposed head-on to the swell today (city-level)
window
From sunset to sunrise spearfishing is prohibited (DPR 1639/1968, art. 129): the window is entirely a daytime one. On a shore oriented at 278° the usable light ends before the legal hour, which stays the hour of the sun. Note the hour you will come out before you get in: from 10 m of shore the way back always looks shorter than it is. With Ponente forecast to strengthen it pays to go earlier rather than to stay longer.
tide
Between the shore and five metres of water there are 110 m, and no tide shifts that line appreciably. The current you will find towards the west will nearly always be wind-driven and not tidal. The inshore current is read off your float, not off the table. If the current takes you past the 140 m of the ten-metre line, head straight back for land.
shelter
A headland gathers sea from a wide sector, so yesterday's swell counts for as much as today's wind from west. The exposure measured on the coastline is 278°, that is full west: in Ponente there is no shelter here, in Levante the water flattens. Dead swell from the west arrives under a clear sky and no wind at all. At Stintino whoever gets in first checks, whoever gets in out of habit is trusting yesterday.
conditions
With 100 m reached about 2500 m out, the limit of the day is set by your breath and not by the distance. 250 m of swimming is all it takes to have twenty metres under you: the slope is steep and the bottom breaks away early. The best water nearly always arrives from offshore on a light Levante. At Stintino it pays to come out feeling you stopped early.
hazard
The marker has to follow you even when you are working 140 m from the shore: 50 m from the vertical below it is the legal maximum. At Stintino it is the point that takes first what the rest of the shoreline feels an hour later. The marine protected area Isola dell'Asinara is about 2.1 km from here: look at the zoning before going down, because in the water the boundaries are invisible. Do not trust a wet handhold: rock with weed under it is ice.
access
In Ponente the only workable entry is the one on the opposite flank of the point. With the shore 10 m away and five metres of water at 110 m, the band to cross is a short one. Look at the exit point before getting in: from inside everything looks the same. At Stintino the accesses change with the bathing season.

Isola Piana channelStintino
dangerous
exposed head-on to the swell today (city-level)
window
In doubt, the order in force at Stintino is asked of the Capitaneria and not of the neighbour in the car park. The useful day is the one where permission, light and sea fall in the same window. The last stretch, the 740 m out to ten metres of water, is the one you will swim tired: put it in the day's arithmetic. A shore oriented at 184° loses the sun before sunset: take it into account for the last descent.
tide
The right question on this coast is not what the tide is doing but what swell has been through. Even at springs the band out to five metres stays 560 m wide: the level does not change the route. The ten-metre line, 740 m offshore, does not move with the level: it moves with the swell. If you feel current, work out the way back before going any further.
shelter
In Ostro the detached rocks break the swell but hand it back confused, and that crossed sea tires you more than a clean wave. The coast here runs NE–SW and opens to the south: that is what decides which forecast to read. Shelter is verified in the water and not on the chart: the first fifty metres already tell you how the rest will be. If the swell starts working inside the 560 m of coastal strip, the session is over.
conditions
With twenty metres at 1000 m from the shore the session is organised in bands rather than in points. The outside water arrives when the wind from the north pushes it in; with an old sea it stays offshore for days. Past 740 m from the shore it is the water that decides the day and not the willingness. At Stintino the inshore current shifts the murk within hours: waiting sometimes works better than moving.
hazard
In Ostro the passage between the shoal and the coast becomes the most dangerous part of the route. Date mussels and protected species are not to be touched, in any quantity and in any season. At Stintino floating lines are seen late: keep an eye above you as well. Mind the proximity of the Isola dell'Asinara AMP, 0.5 km: inside the zoning the rules change completely.
access
In Ostro the crossing out to the shoal is worth thinking about twice, because on the way back you will have it against you. The first 560 m are the murkiest, and after them the bottom starts to read. At Stintino the return is planned on the afternoon swell, not on the morning one. The last stretch back to land, 40 m, is always done with less breath than you expected.
Punta Negra / Coscia di DonnaStintino
dangerous
exposed head-on to the swell today (city-level)
window
Between the shore and five metres of water there are 140 m: that is the stretch you want to cover in good light. The orders of the Capitaneria responsible for Stintino can add seasonal prohibitions, and they outrank the general rule. With the 140 m that separate you from five metres of water, the return in daylight is planned from the start. Carrying your papers costs nothing and settles everything.
tide
On this coast the tide stays in the centimetres and generates no flow, neither useful nor troublesome. At Stintino nobody plans an outing around the tide, and they are right not to. Water pushing you towards the west, that is towards the open sea, is the signal to come out. With the shore 40 m from the mark, the alongshore current counts for more than any table.
shelter
Gusts from the east ruffle the surface but raise no swell: it is the fetch towards the west that counts. On the point at Stintino it is the flank that gives you the shelter, not the general lie of the coast. With wind from the west building, the window shuts fast: plan the way back with margin. The 300 m that separate the shore from ten metres of water tell you how much sea it takes to ruin the day.
conditions
The first stretch is nearly always the worst: you cross it and judge afterwards. On a medium slope the murky inshore strip usually ends well before 640 m. In Ponente the suspension stays inshore; in Levante it is gone in half a day. At Stintino the good days are few and have to be taken when they come.
hazard
The surface marker is compulsory: a float with a red flag and a white diagonal stripe, visible at 300 m, and you may not go more than 50 m from the vertical below it. In Ponente the point becomes the worst place on this coast to get out of the water. At Stintino the real risk is not the depth: it is the combination of tiredness and swell. The way back from 300 m out is longer than it looks once you are tired.
access
At Stintino the point is reached on foot, and the long part of the day is the part out of the water. The mark is right against the shore, 40 m from the coastline, and ten metres of water is about 300 m out. In a building sea the rock you got in from may not be there on the way back. With Ponente strengthening the exit is brought forward, not discussed.

Entries to the S; rock and clear water, shelter on easterly winds.

Law
  • ✓NO paid licence, but a free MASAF REGISTRATION is mandatory (recreational sea-fishing declaration, online via SIAN/SPID, annual) — it is not a «licence».
  • ✓Free-diving only: scuba/rebreather/hookah BANNED (art. 128-bis DPR 1639/68). The 16+ rule comes from a different act — D.Lgs 4/2012, art. 6 c. 5; handing a speargun to an under-16 is an offence (art. 13-octies c. 3 b, as replaced by L. 75/2026).
  • ✓Night prohibited: spearfishing only from dawn to sunset (art. 129e DPR 1639/68).
  • ✓Distances (art. 129 DPR 1639/68): ≥500 m from beaches with bathers; ≥100 m from fixed gear/set nets and from vessels anchored outside ports.
  • ✓Buoy MANDATORY (art. 130 DPR 1639/68): float with a red flag bearing a white diagonal stripe, visible ≥300 m; the diver stays within 50 m of the buoy/support boat.
  • ✓The speargun may not be kept armed out of the water (art. 131 DPR 1639/68) — load only when submerged.
  • ✓The spearfisher may NOT gather corals, crustaceans or molluscs — the second paragraph of the same article (art. 128-bis DPR 1639/68; the same rule in D.M. 249/1987, art. 2). BUT cephalopods are EXCLUDED: octopus, cuttlefish and squid may be taken — the exception is kept in terms by the official guidance (circolare 6227201 of 23.07.1987). Mussels — up to 3 kg per person per day, but only with the Capo del Compartimento Marittimo's authorisation. The 5 kg daily cap counts EVERYTHING taken that day (D.Lgs 4/2012, art. 13-octies c. 4, as replaced by L. 75/2026).
  • ✓You MAY carry a speargun and a breathing apparatus on the same boat — but at most ONE cylinder of up to 10 L per vessel, and using it to fish is prohibited (art. 128-ter DPR 1639/68). While you are down, at least one person must stay aboard ready to intervene, and there must be a rope long enough to recover the diver.
  • ✓Sale of recreational catch is PROHIBITED (EU control regime, Reg. CE 1224/2009).
  • ✓The 5 kg/person daily cap IS in force and carries a fine: €500–3 000 up to 10 kg, €2 000–12 000 up to 50 kg, €12 000–50 000 above (D.Lgs 4/2012, art. 13-octies c. 4, as replaced by Law 21 Apr 2026 no. 75). Exception: a single fish heavier than 5 kg. Recovery-plan species and bluefin tuna: +1/3 (c. 5).
  • ✓Sardegna (autonomous): STRICTER minimum sizes (parenthetical in the species table: dentex 30, mullet 25, moray 60, conger 50, amberjack/leerfish 60 cm etc.) + FULL grouper (cernia) ban.
Safety protocol
  • Sets: watch the wave trains ≥15 min before entering; Hmax ≈ 2×Hs, the wash can run 50 m past the foam line. A lull >10 min with period >12 s = a big set «overdue», do NOT enter; enter right after a full set passes and re-check at minute 30.
  • Exit FIRST: find your exit AND a backup before entering. On a rocky/boulder shore a 0.5 m rise in swell can make the exit impossible — getting pinned/unable to climb out is the main killer.
  • Headland rip: prominent points often have a permanent topographic rip regardless of the model — locate it, enter/exit on the windward side, never swim against it.
  • Cold: wetsuit per the SST chip; the first shiver = a metabolic surge and a drop in breath-hold → get out at the first steady shiver. Cap the session at 45–60 min below 15 °C.
  • Solo discipline: buoy up; tell someone the spot and exit time; conservative breath-hold (never push it in cold/murky/surfy water); visibility <3 m — don't enter.
  • Afternoon wind: on many coasts the wind builds from midday — plan to be out of the water by midday; the chop builds — get out.
  • UV 11:00–15:00 (UVI ≥6): sunscreen and cover up on the surface interval.
  • Solo is a fundamental risk (hypoxic blackout with no buddy). Any doubt = No-go.

FAQ — spearfishing in Stintino

Where can I spearfish in Stintino?

Stintino has rock entry points such as Capo Falcone, Isola Piana channel and Punta Negra / Coscia di Donna. Two sides: Capo Falcone takes the full mistral, while the Gulf of Asinara side stays calm on westerlies with shallow sand and stone ridges, 1–5 m. Below you'll find each spot (access, shelter and hazards) and today's forecast.

When is the best season in Stintino?

A long season, clear water almost all year. When the mistral (NW) shuts the west coast, you switch to the east side (Arbatax, Orosei); the south opens with a northerly. The peak is between late spring and autumn.

How cold is the water in Stintino?

Warm and crystal: ~14–26 °C. A 3 mm suit in summer, 5 mm in the shoulder months. Among the best visibility in the Mediterranean, over granite and cliffs.

Is Stintino good for a beginner?

Intermediate and up: granite and cliffs dropping into depth, crystal water. The mistral can make the west coast unworkable — switch to the east side. Know the many MPAs' boundaries. Buoy always.

Do I need a licence in Stintino?

No — in Stintino there is no paid licence; a free MASAF declaration is mandatory (the recreational sea-fishing communication, online via SIAN/SPID, renewed each year), which is not a «licence». Breath-hold only (no scuba), with a marker buoy and no selling the catch. See the guide.
