The timing here is set by law rather than by convenience: sunrise to sunset and nothing else. At Carloforte the bathing season changes the usable distances far more than the sea ever does. A shore oriented at 15° loses the sun before sunset: take it into account for the last descent. The rules change from one municipality to the next more than you would think.
tide
The regime is microtidal: the level at Carloforte moves less than half a metre even at springs. It is worth telling a real tide from a wind surge: the second one shows, the first almost never does. The way back, 60 m to the five-metre band, is decided beforehand and not on the way. In a hard Tramontana the water piles up inshore and drains away sideways.
shelter
On the point at Carloforte it is the flank that gives you the shelter, not the general lie of the coast. The coast here runs SE–NW and opens to the north: that is what decides which forecast to read. When the swell gets in, the whole coastal strip, 60 m wide here, lifts and the clarity goes. If the swell starts working inside the 60 m of coastal strip, the session is over.
conditions
Here depth grows faster than distance: 340 m of swimming is worth twenty metres of water. With 100 m reached about 4700 m out, the limit of the day is set by your breath and not by the distance. At Carloforte it pays to come out feeling you stopped early. By 140 m from the shore you already know whether it is worth going on.
hazard
On this point the way out is chosen beforehand: exposed rock does not forgive a mistake in timing. At Carloforte, as along the whole Italian coast, the surface marker and the 50 m radius are not negotiable. If you feel out of place, you are out of place: come out. With 60 m out to five metres, the exit is short only if you decide on it in time.
access
The entry on the cape is chosen by looking at where the water leans instead of hitting. The first 60 m are the murkiest, and after them the bottom starts to read. At Carloforte the return is planned on the afternoon swell, not on the morning one. If you do not fancy swimming the 140 m back from ten metres of water, do not go any further out.

National law sets the perimeter; the local Capitaneria orders can tighten it. On breath-hold, by day, with the marker in sight: the rest is local variation. A check takes two minutes to settle if your declaration is in order. At Carloforte it is better to know the prohibition than to discover it from a fine.
tide
The level barely moves: the 10 m contour stays 220 m from the shore at any hour of the day. The typical range on this stretch is between twenty and forty centimetres: it opens no passages and closes none. The best moment is the one when the sea is flat, not the one written in the table. At Carloforte the sea tells you the time better than any table.
shelter
There is no general shelter here: there is a flank that holds in Scirocco and one that does not, and they swap as the sea turns. The shore in front of the mark faces southeast, about 134°, so everything arriving from that sector gets in unobstructed. The local wind can turn in the afternoon: what was in the lee in the morning is not by midday. At Carloforte the old rule holds: watch the sea for ten minutes, then decide.
conditions
After a blow the coast gives the sight back in two or three days, longer over sand. The step is short: 220 m for ten metres, 300 m for twenty, and from there the bottom keeps going. After three calm days the water at Carloforte is a different water. With Scirocco strengthening, the good window closes without warning.
hazard
In Scirocco the point becomes the worst place on this coast to get out of the water. A hundred metres from fixed installations and from vessels at anchor is an obligation, not a courtesy. The way back from 220 m out is longer than it looks once you are tired. At Carloforte the real risk is not the depth: it is the combination of tiredness and swell.
access
Access on a headland is nearly always on foot over rock: short but awkward, with loose stone right down to the water. From here to the 5 m contour is about 110 m, and it pays to measure them on the way out so as not to find them long on the way back. From the entry point to the shore there are 30 m, and they are the metres that weigh most on the return. At Carloforte the best place is the one you can leave without hurrying.

The orders of the Capitaneria responsible for Carloforte can add seasonal prohibitions, and they outrank the general rule. Between the shore and five metres of water there are 90 m: that is the stretch you want to cover in good light. The last stretch, the 220 m out to ten metres of water, is the one you will swim tired: put it in the day's arithmetic. Under a high coast the light goes before the clock says it should.
tide
In the Mediterranean the tide is not the figure that decides the day, and it is better to know that before going looking for tables. The current you will find towards the north will nearly always be wind-driven and not tidal. The ten-metre line, 220 m offshore, does not move with the level: it moves with the swell. If the current takes you past the 220 m of the ten-metre line, head straight back for land.
shelter
The opening to the north is wide: no nearby storm is needed here, an old sea from that sector is enough. The rock of the point throws back what it receives, and that return is what makes the exposed flank uncomfortable even in a small sea. With the wind from the south at your back you can work; with the swell from the north in your face you look and go home. At Carloforte the difference between a bad day and a good one is a hundred metres of coast, not an hour of waiting.
conditions
The steepness of the ground, twenty metres at 360 m, is what makes this entry usable even with little time. The 10 m contour runs about 220 m from the shore and is the practical reference for this entry. Past 220 m from the shore it is the water that decides the day and not the willingness. At Carloforte the inshore current shifts the murk within hours: waiting sometimes works better than moving.
hazard
The marker has to follow you even when you are working 220 m from the shore: 50 m from the vertical below it is the legal maximum. At Carloforte it is the point that takes first what the rest of the shoreline feels an hour later. A day given up is never a mistake. With Tramontana building, the window shuts sooner than the forecast says.
access
In Tramontana the only workable entry is the one on the opposite flank of the point. With the shore 40 m away and five metres of water at 90 m, the band to cross is a short one. Count the 90 m that separate you from the five-metre contour: they are the measure of the way back. At Carloforte the accesses change with the bathing season.

Law
  • ✓NO paid licence, but a free MASAF REGISTRATION is mandatory (recreational sea-fishing declaration, online via SIAN/SPID, annual) — it is not a «licence».
  • ✓Free-diving only: scuba/rebreather/hookah BANNED (art. 128-bis DPR 1639/68). The 16+ rule comes from a different act — D.Lgs 4/2012, art. 6 c. 5; handing a speargun to an under-16 is an offence (art. 13-octies c. 3 b, as replaced by L. 75/2026).
  • ✓Night prohibited: spearfishing only from dawn to sunset (art. 129e DPR 1639/68).
  • ✓Distances (art. 129 DPR 1639/68): ≥500 m from beaches with bathers; ≥100 m from fixed gear/set nets and from vessels anchored outside ports.
  • ✓Buoy MANDATORY (art. 130 DPR 1639/68): float with a red flag bearing a white diagonal stripe, visible ≥300 m; the diver stays within 50 m of the buoy/support boat.
  • ✓The speargun may not be kept armed out of the water (art. 131 DPR 1639/68) — load only when submerged.
  • ✓The spearfisher may NOT gather corals, crustaceans or molluscs — the second paragraph of the same article (art. 128-bis DPR 1639/68; the same rule in D.M. 249/1987, art. 2). BUT cephalopods are EXCLUDED: octopus, cuttlefish and squid may be taken — the exception is kept in terms by the official guidance (circolare 6227201 of 23.07.1987). Mussels — up to 3 kg per person per day, but only with the Capo del Compartimento Marittimo's authorisation. The 5 kg daily cap counts EVERYTHING taken that day (D.Lgs 4/2012, art. 13-octies c. 4, as replaced by L. 75/2026).
  • ✓You MAY carry a speargun and a breathing apparatus on the same boat — but at most ONE cylinder of up to 10 L per vessel, and using it to fish is prohibited (art. 128-ter DPR 1639/68). While you are down, at least one person must stay aboard ready to intervene, and there must be a rope long enough to recover the diver.
  • ✓Sale of recreational catch is PROHIBITED (EU control regime, Reg. CE 1224/2009).
  • ✓The 5 kg/person daily cap IS in force and carries a fine: €500–3 000 up to 10 kg, €2 000–12 000 up to 50 kg, €12 000–50 000 above (D.Lgs 4/2012, art. 13-octies c. 4, as replaced by Law 21 Apr 2026 no. 75). Exception: a single fish heavier than 5 kg. Recovery-plan species and bluefin tuna: +1/3 (c. 5).
  • ✓Sardegna (autonomous): STRICTER minimum sizes (parenthetical in the species table: dentex 30, mullet 25, moray 60, conger 50, amberjack/leerfish 60 cm etc.) + FULL grouper (cernia) ban.
Safety protocol
  • Sets: watch the wave trains ≥15 min before entering; Hmax ≈ 2×Hs, the wash can run 50 m past the foam line. A lull >10 min with period >12 s = a big set «overdue», do NOT enter; enter right after a full set passes and re-check at minute 30.
  • Exit FIRST: find your exit AND a backup before entering. On a rocky/boulder shore a 0.5 m rise in swell can make the exit impossible — getting pinned/unable to climb out is the main killer.
  • Headland rip: prominent points often have a permanent topographic rip regardless of the model — locate it, enter/exit on the windward side, never swim against it.
  • Cold: wetsuit per the SST chip; the first shiver = a metabolic surge and a drop in breath-hold → get out at the first steady shiver. Cap the session at 45–60 min below 15 °C.
  • Solo discipline: buoy up; tell someone the spot and exit time; conservative breath-hold (never push it in cold/murky/surfy water); visibility <3 m — don't enter.
  • Afternoon wind: on many coasts the wind builds from midday — plan to be out of the water by midday; the chop builds — get out.
  • UV 11:00–15:00 (UVI ≥6): sunscreen and cover up on the surface interval.
  • Solo is a fundamental risk (hypoxic blackout with no buddy). Any doubt = No-go.

Spearfishing in Carloforte: spots, seasons and rules

Spearfishing in Carloforte / Sant'Antioco depends on choosing the right side of the islands. Capo Sandalo is an exposed western cliff and drop in the Mistral line. La Punta / Punta delle Colonne offers relative shelter on westerly winds. Capo Sperone on Sant'Antioco is granite to the south, exposed to S/SW. The data shows no local plume or buoy. Pick the return route before loading.

  • Carloforte / Sant'Antioco is exposure management: Capo Sandalo takes Mistral, La Punta can shelter from west, Capo Sperone opens S/SW.
  • The general coast face is 270 degrees, with 205-335 degrees as the bad sector and 315 degrees the worst line.
  • Sardegna adds stricter minimum sizes and a full grouper ban to Italy's MASAF, apnea-only, daylight, buoy and distance rules.

When are conditions worth it around Carloforte?

If 315 degrees is active, Capo Sandalo is the wrong idea. La Punta can be useful when west wind is the problem but the sea has settled. Capo Sperone needs a different filter: avoid south and southwest swell. Mediterranean tide is secondary.
