window: From sunset to sunrise spearfishing is prohibited (DPR 1639/1968, art. 129): the window is entirely a daytime one. Spearfishing on breath-hold is allowed by day; at night it is banned under DPR 1639/1968. The last stretch, the 740 m out to ten metres of water, is the one you will swim tired: put it in the day's arithmetic. A shore oriented at 188° loses the sun before sunset: take it into account for the last descent.
tide: The right question on this coast is not what the tide is doing but what swell has been through. With a range that small the entry rock sits at the same level at any hour. At Chia the level changes little, but the current towards the south can be noticeable in the channels. If the current takes you past the 740 m of the ten-metre line, head straight back for land.
shelter: You are in the lee in Tramontana; the moment the wind goes south, the water under the shore dirties. In a bay like this the shelter is a few tens of metres wide, tucked against the windward point rather than in the middle of the arc, and in a hard Ostro not even that. With the wind from the north at your back you can work; with the swell from the south in your face you look and go home. A metre of long swell from the south is worth more than two metres of short chop raised inshore.

window: A hundred metres is the minimum from fixed fishing installations and from vessels anchored outside harbours. Between the shore and five metres of water there are 720 m: that is the stretch you want to cover in good light. At Chia it is better to know the prohibition than to discover it from a fine. With the 720 m that separate you from five metres of water, the return in daylight is planned from the start.
tide: Between the shore and five metres of water there are 720 m, and no tide shifts that line appreciably. The regime is microtidal: the level at Chia moves less than half a metre even at springs. With the water down on a wind surge the entry rocks get more slippery, not more comfortable. With Ponente strengthening the inshore current picks up before the swell does.
shelter: Read the point from the road above it: wherever the foam stays stuck to the rock, that side is not today's side. The coast here runs N–S and opens to the west: that is what decides which forecast to read. The strip between the shore and the 5 m contour, about 720 m here, is the first to churn and the last to clear. If the swell starts working inside the 720 m of coastal strip, the session is over.
conditions: With 100 m reached about 3300 m out, the limit of the day is set by your breath and not by the distance. Getting twenty metres under you takes about 850 m of swimming, so it pays to get in already decided on where to go. After three calm days the water at Chia is a different water. Past 740 m from the shore it is the water that decides the day and not the willingness.
hazard: This mark falls inside the marine protected area Capo Spartivento, where spearfishing is prohibited: you do not shoot here, and the zoning of the AMP has to be read before going down. At Chia it is the point that takes first what the rest of the shoreline feels an hour later. Inside the perimeter of the Capo Spartivento AMP you get in the water only to look: breath-hold spearfishing is banned in every zone of the area. The way back from 740 m out is longer than it looks once you are tired.
access: Access on a headland is nearly always on foot over rock: short but awkward, with loose stone right down to the water. The mark is right against the shore, 30 m from the coastline, and ten metres of water is about 740 m out. Count the 720 m that separate you from the five-metre contour: they are the measure of the way back. At Chia the accesses change with the bathing season.
