The verdict comes from seven water factors and hard safety gates — not ten tabs. Go or stay.

How we score the water

Our own model

Our own forecast engine — not a third-party widget. It weighs these water factors into one go-or-stay verdict for this coast; the 0–10 dial is that verdict, read out as a number.

01
Swell & wave memory
Height, period and direction of the swell, plus the wake of recent storms — an old storm still stirs the water, and the engine remembers.
02
Wind & gusts
Speed and gusts, hour by hour — wind speed and an onshore push chop the surface and cut visibility.
03
Tide phase
Timing and range of the tide, calibrated per coast — big spring tides pull the verdict toward caution.
04
Water temperature
Sea-surface temperature — sharply cold water vetoes a green verdict.
05
Currents & outflow
Direction and drift of the current — it pushes you, and it drags turbid coastal water across where you dive.
06
Rain runoff & air clarity
Rain muddies the water inshore through land runoff, while fog and haze cut visibility at the surface.
07
Coast shape & exposure
How the coast faces the swell — a sheltered cove keeps the water clean; an exposed, head-on point takes a penalty.

Safety gates

  • Thunderstorm forecast — an instant red, no exceptions.
  • An official warning (MeteoAlarm / IPMA) — yellow, or red for the higher ranks.
  • Missing input data — a would-be green is capped to yellow rather than overstated.
  • Strong disagreement between forecast models — a green day is pulled back to yellow.
  • Night hours — where night spearfishing is banned by law the window is forced red; where it is legal (Australia outside NSW, New Zealand, South Africa) it is capped at yellow, never green.

It all folds into a single 0–10 score and one verdict: go or stay.

A forecast, not a guarantee — the sea has the last word.

What it is

A marine instrument,
go / no-go for solo hunting.

spearo.app folds wind, wave, swell period, visibility, tides, water temperature and risk into a single verdict — go to the spot or not. It computes 7 days ahead from open marine models (Open-Meteo, IPMA), with no sign-up and no accounts. Built for solo spearfishing off the rocks, where any mistake costs dearly.

Now live: 3016 spots across 406 stretches of coast — mainland Portugal, Madeira and the Azores.

Baia dell'OgliastroAcciaroli
borderline
exposed head-on to the swell today (city-level)
window
With ten metres of water 520 m from the shore, the band where you meet the local orders is all of it right here. At Acciaroli as anywhere else, the hours of the session are the hours of the sun. The last stretch, the 520 m out to ten metres of water, is the one you will swim tired: put it in the day's arithmetic. A check takes two minutes to settle if your declaration is in order.
tide
Even at springs the band out to five metres stays 340 m wide: the level does not change the route. At Acciaroli nobody plans an outing around the tide, and they are right not to. With current and poor clarity together, better to postpone. In a hard Libeccio the water piles up inshore and drains away sideways.
shelter
The bay works like a funnel: with the swell in the mouth the water inside dirties, and it stays dirty after the wind has dropped. The exposure measured on the coastline is 241°, that is full southwest: in Libeccio there is no shelter here, in Grecale the water flattens. The 520 m that separate the shore from ten metres of water tell you how much sea it takes to ruin the day. If the swell starts working inside the 340 m of coastal strip, the session is over.
conditions
A slope this gentle, twenty metres at 1600 m, holds sand in suspension long after the swell. With 100 m reached about 4100 m out, the limit of the day is set by your breath and not by the distance. The ascent is looked at before the descent. At Acciaroli the inshore current shifts the murk within hours: waiting sometimes works better than moving.
hazard
The mouth of the bay is where the swell concentrates and where getting back becomes difficult. On the shoreline at Acciaroli the same national rules apply without discounts: breath-hold, daylight, marker in sight. The way back from 520 m out is longer than it looks once you are tired. At sea the number to call is 1530, the Coast Guard.
access
The first 340 m are the murkiest, and after them the bottom starts to read. The entry off the beach is the most comfortable and the murkiest: it pays to cross the dirty band straight away. If you do not fancy swimming the 520 m back from ten metres of water, do not go any further out. At Acciaroli the return is planned on the afternoon swell, not on the morning one.

Rocky bay with cave bottom; crystal Cilento water between Licosa and Palinuro.

borderline
exposed head-on to the swell today (city-level)
window
From sunset to sunrise spearfishing is prohibited (DPR 1639/1968, art. 129): the window is entirely a daytime one. With Ostro in the forecast the useful window shortens by itself, long before sunset. At Acciaroli the season conditions the law more than it conditions the sea. A shore oriented at 165° loses the sun before sunset: take it into account for the last descent.
tide
The current you will find towards the south will nearly always be wind-driven and not tidal. The only range you notice is the one the wind pushes, not the astronomical one. If the current takes you past the 520 m of the ten-metre line, head straight back for land. At Acciaroli the level changes little, but the current towards the south can be noticeable in the channels.
shelter
Here the protection comes from the ground behind the shore rather than from the coast itself, so in Ostro where you stand is what matters. The shore in front of the mark faces south, about 165°, so everything arriving from that sector gets in unobstructed. Dead swell from the south arrives under a clear sky and no wind at all. Before getting in, look at where you will come out if the wind turns: the exit is not always the entry.
conditions
After a blow the coast gives the sight back in two or three days, longer over sand. The distance to twenty metres, 1400 m, makes chasing depth pointless: work the structures close in instead. On doubtful days get in short and extend only if the water holds. At Acciaroli it pays to come out feeling you stopped early.
hazard
In shallow, moving water the bottom is the most dangerous thing you have near you. The law asks for the marker in sight and a maximum radius of 50 m: it is also the only thing that makes you visible to anyone under way. A knife you can reach with one hand is worth more than two in the bag. With Ostro strengthening the margin is spent without your noticing.
access
The mark sits about 30 m from the coastline: the useful water starts practically under the shore. From the shore you get in where the rock slopes down, not where the road comes closest. With Ostro strengthening the exit is brought forward, not discussed. Count the 410 m that separate you from the five-metre contour: they are the measure of the way back.

Rock and mixed bottom to the SE; best in calm from March/April.

Punta dell'Isca / portoAcciaroli

exposed head-on to the swell today (city-level)
window
Between the shore and five metres of water there are 290 m: that is the stretch you want to cover in good light. In doubt, the order in force at Acciaroli is asked of the Capitaneria and not of the neighbour in the car park. With Libeccio forecast to strengthen it pays to go earlier rather than to stay longer. Note the hour you will come out before you get in: from 0 m of shore the way back always looks shorter than it is.
tide
Between the shore and five metres of water there are 290 m, and no tide shifts that line appreciably. At Acciaroli the tidal cycle shows in the thread of current and not in the level of the water. The ten-metre line, 340 m offshore, does not move with the level: it moves with the swell. Water pushing you towards the southwest, that is towards the open sea, is the signal to come out.
shelter
Look at the opening to the southwest before you look at the wind: in Libeccio the sea builds in a few hours, in Grecale it comes down just as fast. A mole shelters what lies behind it and worsens what lies in front: on the exposed side the swell rebounds off the blocks. A sheltered stretch is not a safe stretch: it only changes which risk you are facing. A metre of long swell from the southwest is worth more than two metres of short chop raised inshore.
conditions
The 10 m contour runs about 340 m from the shore and is the practical reference for this entry. The bottom falls away calmly, with no steps: depth is earned with distance, 620 m to reach twenty. In Libeccio the suspension stays inshore; in Grecale it is gone in half a day. At Acciaroli the good days are few and have to be taken when they come.
hazard
On the blocks of a mole the swell rebounds and the blocks shift more than they look as if they would. The marker has to follow you even when you are working 340 m from the shore: 50 m from the vertical below it is the legal maximum. With Libeccio building, the window shuts sooner than the forecast says. At Acciaroli the real risk is not the depth: it is the combination of tiredness and swell.
access
You get in off the blocks carefully: they are unstable and covered in weed. From here to the 5 m contour is about 290 m, and it pays to measure them on the way out so as not to find them long on the way back. At Acciaroli many accesses cross private property: if it is signed, look for another one. The last stretch back to land, 0 m, is always done with less breath than you expected.

Law
  • ✓NO paid licence, but a free MASAF REGISTRATION is mandatory (recreational sea-fishing declaration, online via SIAN/SPID, annual) — it is not a «licence».
  • ✓Free-diving only: scuba/rebreather/hookah BANNED (art. 128-bis DPR 1639/68). The 16+ rule comes from a different act — D.Lgs 4/2012, art. 6 c. 5; handing a speargun to an under-16 is an offence (art. 13-octies c. 3 b, as replaced by L. 75/2026).
  • ✓Night prohibited: spearfishing only from dawn to sunset (art. 129e DPR 1639/68).
  • ✓Distances (art. 129 DPR 1639/68): ≥500 m from beaches with bathers; ≥100 m from fixed gear/set nets and from vessels anchored outside ports.
  • ✓Buoy MANDATORY (art. 130 DPR 1639/68): float with a red flag bearing a white diagonal stripe, visible ≥300 m; the diver stays within 50 m of the buoy/support boat.
  • ✓The speargun may not be kept armed out of the water (art. 131 DPR 1639/68) — load only when submerged.
  • ✓The spearfisher may NOT gather corals, crustaceans or molluscs — the second paragraph of the same article (art. 128-bis DPR 1639/68; the same rule in D.M. 249/1987, art. 2). BUT cephalopods are EXCLUDED: octopus, cuttlefish and squid may be taken — the exception is kept in terms by the official guidance (circolare 6227201 of 23.07.1987). Mussels — up to 3 kg per person per day, but only with the Capo del Compartimento Marittimo's authorisation. The 5 kg daily cap counts EVERYTHING taken that day (D.Lgs 4/2012, art. 13-octies c. 4, as replaced by L. 75/2026).
  • ✓You MAY carry a speargun and a breathing apparatus on the same boat — but at most ONE cylinder of up to 10 L per vessel, and using it to fish is prohibited (art. 128-ter DPR 1639/68). While you are down, at least one person must stay aboard ready to intervene, and there must be a rope long enough to recover the diver.
  • ✓Sale of recreational catch is PROHIBITED (EU control regime, Reg. CE 1224/2009).
  • ✓The 5 kg/person daily cap IS in force and carries a fine: €500–3 000 up to 10 kg, €2 000–12 000 up to 50 kg, €12 000–50 000 above (D.Lgs 4/2012, art. 13-octies c. 4, as replaced by Law 21 Apr 2026 no. 75). Exception: a single fish heavier than 5 kg. Recovery-plan species and bluefin tuna: +1/3 (c. 5).
  • ⛔ Date mussels (Lithophaga lithophaga) — TOTAL BAN: fishing, possession, transport, sale (D.M. 16/10/1998; EU-protected). Never touch.
Safety protocol
  • Sets: watch the wave trains ≥15 min before entering; Hmax ≈ 2×Hs, the wash can run 50 m past the foam line. A lull >10 min with period >12 s = a big set «overdue», do NOT enter; enter right after a full set passes and re-check at minute 30.
  • Exit FIRST: find your exit AND a backup before entering. On a rocky/boulder shore a 0.5 m rise in swell can make the exit impossible — getting pinned/unable to climb out is the main killer.
  • Headland rip: prominent points often have a permanent topographic rip regardless of the model — locate it, enter/exit on the windward side, never swim against it.
  • Cold: wetsuit per the SST chip; the first shiver = a metabolic surge and a drop in breath-hold → get out at the first steady shiver. Cap the session at 45–60 min below 15 °C.
  • Solo discipline: buoy up; tell someone the spot and exit time; conservative breath-hold (never push it in cold/murky/surfy water); visibility <3 m — don't enter.
  • Afternoon wind: on many coasts the wind builds from midday — plan to be out of the water by midday; the chop builds — get out.
  • UV 11:00–15:00 (UVI ≥6): sunscreen and cover up on the surface interval.
  • Solo is a fundamental risk (hypoxic blackout with no buddy). Any doubt = No-go.

FAQ — spearfishing in Acciaroli

Where can I spearfish in Acciaroli?

Acciaroli has rock entry points such as Baia dell'Ogliastro, Punta dell'Isca / porto and Pioppi. Crystal Cilento water: a rocky bay with caves at Ogliastro, a shallow shoal under 6 m and caves to about 15 m by the harbour, and sand with stone ridges at Agnone. Below you'll find each spot (access, shelter and hazards) and today's forecast.

When is the best season in Acciaroli?

A long season: the Cilento (Palinuro, Acciaroli) and the Amalfi coast east of Punta Campanella give warm, clear water from late spring to autumn, and beyond on sheltered days. Work the lee side between the headlands.

How cold is the water in Acciaroli?

Warm: ~14–27 °C, among the mildest on the mainland. A 3 mm suit in summer, 5 mm in the shoulder months. In the Cilento visibility is often excellent.

Is Acciaroli good for a beginner?

Accessible in the Cilento: warm, clear, sheltered water between the headlands, good for building water time on calm days. Mind the summer boat traffic on the Amalfi coast. Buoy always.

Do I need a licence in Acciaroli?

No — in Acciaroli there is no paid licence; a free MASAF declaration is mandatory (the recreational sea-fishing communication, online via SIAN/SPID, renewed each year), which is not a «licence». Breath-hold only (no scuba), with a marker buoy and no selling the catch. See the guide.
