The orders of the Capitaneria responsible for Scilla can add seasonal prohibitions, and they outrank the general rule. Between the shore and five metres of water there are 80 m: that is the stretch you want to cover in good light. Keeping to the hours is also the simplest way of having no trouble. The buoy lines marking off the beaches are a legal reference, not a suggestion.
tide
If anything changes the level at Scilla, it is pressure and wind, not the moon. Swell from the northeast moves more water in ten minutes than the tide moves in six hours. The best moment is the one when the sea is flat, not the one written in the table. With Grecale strengthening the inshore current picks up before the swell does.
shelter
On a straight stretch everything that enters the sector arrives unfiltered, and the sea can be read from land in two minutes. The exposure measured on the coastline is 48°, that is full northeast: in Grecale there is no shelter here, in Libeccio the water flattens. A metre of long swell from the northeast is worth more than two metres of short chop raised inshore. At Scilla whoever gets in first checks, whoever gets in out of habit is trusting yesterday.
conditions
The ground in front of the entry decides most of it: the sooner it drops, the sooner you are out of the dirty water. The step is short: 100 m for ten metres, 210 m for twenty, and from there the bottom keeps going. After three calm days the water at Scilla is a different water. Past 100 m from the shore it is the water that decides the day and not the willingness.
hazard
Never a loaded speargun out of the water (art. 131): you load below and unload before setting foot back on the rock. In shallow, moving water the bottom is the most dangerous thing you have near you. A phone in a dry bag is worth more than any piece of kit. With Grecale building, the window shuts sooner than the forecast says.
access
On a straight stretch the entry is not a point but a choice among many. The mark is right against the shore, 30 m from the coastline, and ten metres of water is about 100 m out. From the entry point to the shore there are 30 m, and they are the metres that weigh most on the return. At Scilla the best place is the one you can leave without hurrying.

The framework is national: in Italy the basic rules hold from Ventimiglia to Trieste. It is also prohibited within 500 m of beaches used by bathers: in summer that is the distance you meet most often. With Tramontana forecast to strengthen it pays to go earlier rather than to stay longer. At Scilla the season conditions the law more than it conditions the sea.
tide
In the Mediterranean the tide is not the figure that decides the day, and it is better to know that before going looking for tables. Under half a metre of range means the only real variable left is the swell. At Scilla the local currents depend more on the shape of the bottom than on the hour. A steady current tires you more than a short wave.
shelter
In Tramontana the detached rocks break the swell but hand it back confused, and that crossed sea tires you more than a clean wave. The good sector is the one opposite the opening: from the south the water stays still even in a steady blow. With leftover swell the surface lies: watch the sets from land for a couple of minutes before deciding. At Scilla the old rule holds: watch the sea for ten minutes, then decide.
conditions
If you cannot see the bottom 280 m out, the day is over before it starts. A slope this steep keeps the dirty strip narrow: past 460 m the sight is nearly always better. At Scilla the inshore current shifts the murk within hours: waiting sometimes works better than moving. Come back with margin: tiredness takes your judgement before it takes your strength.
hazard
In Tramontana the passage between the shoal and the coast becomes the most dangerous part of the route. The marker has to follow you even when you are working 460 m from the shore: 50 m from the vertical below it is the legal maximum. Hypothermia works slowly: you feel it on the way out, not during. At 10 m from the shore no emergency sorts itself out: come out at the first sign.
access
Under the shore the bottom is what you see from above, 10 m from the coastline. On detached rocks the exit is prepared as soon as you arrive, not at the end. At Scilla the accesses change with the bathing season. Boots are worth more on land than in the water on this kind of entry.

Spearfishing on breath-hold is allowed by day; at night it is banned under DPR 1639/1968. With ten metres of water 120 m from the shore, the band where you meet the local orders is all of it right here. With the 170 m that separate you from five metres of water, the return in daylight is planned from the start. At Scilla it is better to know the prohibition than to discover it from a fine.
tide
Between the shore and five metres of water there are 170 m, and no tide shifts that line appreciably. The current you will find towards the east will nearly always be wind-driven and not tidal. The ten-metre line, 120 m offshore, does not move with the level: it moves with the swell. At Scilla the sea tells you the time better than any table.
shelter
In front of a cave or an arch the water breathes with the sea: with leftover swell the entrance pushes and sucks. The shore in front of the mark faces east, about 84°, so everything arriving from that sector gets in unobstructed. At Scilla the difference between a bad day and a good one is a hundred metres of coast, not an hour of waiting. If the swell starts working inside the 170 m of coastal strip, the session is over.
conditions
In poor clarity at Scilla it pays to work short and close to the bottom instead of heading out. 150 m of swimming is all it takes to have twenty metres under you: the slope is steep and the bottom breaks away early. The best water nearly always arrives from offshore on a light Ponente. With Levante strengthening, the good window closes without warning.
hazard
On the shoreline at Scilla the same national rules apply without discounts: breath-hold, daylight, marker in sight. Under a wall there is no sideways escape: if the swell builds you come out where you went in or nowhere. Hurrying at the exit is the commonest cause of injuries on the rock. The way back from 120 m out is longer than it looks once you are tired.
access
Off a high wall the exit is a single point: remember that before you go any distance. From here to the 5 m contour is about 170 m, and it pays to measure them on the way out so as not to find them long on the way back. At Scilla many accesses cross private property: if it is signed, look for another one. Carry out what you carry in, and what you find as well.

Every session has to be marked at the surface: without a marker you are not in order, quite apart from not being seen. At Scilla as anywhere else, the hours of the session are the hours of the sun. The last stretch, the 120 m out to ten metres of water, is the one you will swim tired: put it in the day's arithmetic. The moment of the day is chosen on the sea, not out of habit.
tide
The level barely moves: the 10 m contour stays 120 m from the shore at any hour of the day. At Scilla the tidal cycle shows in the thread of current and not in the level of the water. In a hard Maestrale the water piles up inshore and drains away sideways. Water pushing you towards the northwest, that is towards the open sea, is the signal to come out.
shelter
The coast here runs E–W and opens to the northwest: that is what decides which forecast to read. Under a cliff the offshore wind passes over your head and the water stays smooth, but the long swell arrives all the same. With wind from the northwest building, the window shuts fast: plan the way back with margin. When the swell gets in, the whole coastal strip, 80 m wide here, lifts and the clarity goes.
conditions
The strip under the shore is the last to clear; the clean part starts where the bottom breaks away. The bottom drops straight away: the 10 m contour runs about 120 m out and the 20 m contour 120 m. By 120 m from the shore you already know whether it is worth going on. At Scilla the good days are few and have to be taken when they come.
hazard
The 500 m from used beaches starts at the water's edge, which is 80 m from here: in summer it is the first calculation to make. Rock coming down from above is a real risk under a cliff, especially after rain. With 80 m out to five metres, the exit is short only if you decide on it in time. At Scilla floating lines are seen late: keep an eye above you as well.
access
Under a cliff the access is the real problem: you go down where there is a gully, not wherever you like. With 80 m from the shore it pays to set off from the nearest point of the coast. Count the 80 m that separate you from the five-metre contour: they are the measure of the way back. If you do not fancy swimming the 120 m back from ten metres of water, do not go any further out.

  • ✓NO paid licence, but a free MASAF REGISTRATION is mandatory (recreational sea-fishing declaration, online via SIAN/SPID, annual) — it is not a «licence».
  • ✓Free-diving only: scuba/rebreather/hookah BANNED (art. 128-bis DPR 1639/68). The 16+ rule comes from a different act — D.Lgs 4/2012, art. 6 c. 5; handing a speargun to an under-16 is an offence (art. 13-octies c. 3 b, as replaced by L. 75/2026).
  • ✓Night prohibited: spearfishing only from dawn to sunset (art. 129e DPR 1639/68).
  • ✓Distances (art. 129 DPR 1639/68): ≥500 m from beaches with bathers; ≥100 m from fixed gear/set nets and from vessels anchored outside ports.
  • ✓Buoy MANDATORY (art. 130 DPR 1639/68): float with a red flag bearing a white diagonal stripe, visible ≥300 m; the diver stays within 50 m of the buoy/support boat.
  • ✓The speargun may not be kept armed out of the water (art. 131 DPR 1639/68) — load only when submerged.
  • ✓The spearfisher may NOT gather corals, crustaceans or molluscs — the second paragraph of the same article (art. 128-bis DPR 1639/68; the same rule in D.M. 249/1987, art. 2). BUT cephalopods are EXCLUDED: octopus, cuttlefish and squid may be taken — the exception is kept in terms by the official guidance (circolare 6227201 of 23.07.1987). Mussels — up to 3 kg per person per day, but only with the Capo del Compartimento Marittimo's authorisation. The 5 kg daily cap counts EVERYTHING taken that day (D.Lgs 4/2012, art. 13-octies c. 4, as replaced by L. 75/2026).
  • ✓You MAY carry a speargun and a breathing apparatus on the same boat — but at most ONE cylinder of up to 10 L per vessel, and using it to fish is prohibited (art. 128-ter DPR 1639/68). While you are down, at least one person must stay aboard ready to intervene, and there must be a rope long enough to recover the diver.
  • ✓Sale of recreational catch is PROHIBITED (EU control regime, Reg. CE 1224/2009).
  • ✓The 5 kg/person daily cap IS in force and carries a fine: €500–3 000 up to 10 kg, €2 000–12 000 up to 50 kg, €12 000–50 000 above (D.Lgs 4/2012, art. 13-octies c. 4, as replaced by Law 21 Apr 2026 no. 75). Exception: a single fish heavier than 5 kg. Recovery-plan species and bluefin tuna: +1/3 (c. 5).
  • ⛔ Date mussels (Lithophaga lithophaga) — TOTAL BAN: fishing, possession, transport, sale (D.M. 16/10/1998; EU-protected). Never touch.
Safety protocol
  • Sets: watch the wave trains ≥15 min before entering; Hmax ≈ 2×Hs, the wash can run 50 m past the foam line. A lull >10 min with period >12 s = a big set «overdue», do NOT enter; enter right after a full set passes and re-check at minute 30.
  • Exit FIRST: find your exit AND a backup before entering. On a rocky/boulder shore a 0.5 m rise in swell can make the exit impossible — getting pinned/unable to climb out is the main killer.
  • Headland rip: prominent points often have a permanent topographic rip regardless of the model — locate it, enter/exit on the windward side, never swim against it.
  • Cold: wetsuit per the SST chip; the first shiver = a metabolic surge and a drop in breath-hold → get out at the first steady shiver. Cap the session at 45–60 min below 15 °C.
  • Solo discipline: buoy up; tell someone the spot and exit time; conservative breath-hold (never push it in cold/murky/surfy water); visibility <3 m — don't enter.
  • Afternoon wind: on many coasts the wind builds from midday — plan to be out of the water by midday; the chop builds — get out.
  • UV 11:00–15:00 (UVI ≥6): sunscreen and cover up on the surface interval.
  • Solo is a fundamental risk (hypoxic blackout with no buddy). Any doubt = No-go.

Spearfishing in Scilla: spots, seasons and rules

Spearfishing in Scilla is built around caves, rock, and current. Grotta dello Sparviero has rock west of Marina Grande, grouper, excellent visibility, and bottom dropping into the abyss. Chianalea is the boulder front below the village, with seabream and mullet. Grotta del Monaco is closest to the Strait and should be dived only at slack water. Favazzina adds pebble shore, rocks, seabass, seabream, and strong current.

  • Grotta del Monaco is the hard warning: closest to the Strait, dive only at slack water.
  • Favazzina also notes strong current; bad sector 205-295, worst near 225.

When are conditions best in Scilla?

Slack water matters as much as sea state. Grotta del Monaco requires slack, and Favazzina warns of strong current. The coast also has a 205-295 degree bad sector, worst near 225. Italy rules apply: free MASAF declaration, apnea only from age 16, no night spearfishing, buoy within 50 m, 500 m from bathers, 100 m from nets or anchored vessels, and about 5 kg daily catch.
