window: With Scirocco in the forecast the useful window shortens by itself, long before sunset. A hundred metres is the minimum from fixed fishing installations and from vessels anchored outside harbours. With the 80 m that separate you from five metres of water, the return in daylight is planned from the start. At Bagnara Calabra the season conditions the law more than it conditions the sea.
tide: With a range that small the entry rock sits at the same level at any hour. If anything changes the level at Bagnara Calabra, it is pressure and wind, not the moon. The way back, 80 m to the five-metre band, is decided beforehand and not on the way. In a hard Scirocco the water piles up inshore and drains away sideways.
shelter: With an exposure of 140° the awkward sector runs from east to south, and outside it the day is usually saved. An inlet closed between two points holds while the sea arrives across it; head on, it does not hold at all. At Bagnara Calabra whoever gets in first checks, whoever gets in out of habit is trusting yesterday. The 90 m that separate the shore from ten metres of water tell you how much sea it takes to ruin the day.
conditions: 200 m of swimming is all it takes to have twenty metres under you: the slope is steep and the bottom breaks away early. The 10 m contour runs about 90 m from the shore and is the practical reference for this entry. At Bagnara Calabra the good days are few and have to be taken when they come. The nearest river mouth is the first thing to look at after rain.
hazard: At Bagnara Calabra, as along the whole Italian coast, the surface marker and the 50 m radius are not negotiable. Coves also collect what the sea brings: lost nets and lines on the bottom. At 30 m from the shore no emergency sorts itself out: come out at the first sign. Keep in mind the 30 m that separate you from the coast when you decide on the last descent.
access: At Bagnara Calabra the entry at the head of the cove is the one that holds up best even in a made-up sea. With the shore 30 m away and five metres of water at 80 m, the band to cross is a short one. From the entry point to the shore there are 30 m, and they are the metres that weigh most on the return. The last stretch back to land, 30 m, is always done with less breath than you expected.

window: With ten metres of water 280 m from the shore, the band where you meet the local orders is all of it right here. At Bagnara Calabra as anywhere else, the hours of the session are the hours of the sun. Time spent finding out is time taken away from trouble. If there are people in the water the question is not the law but common sense: move.
tide: The level barely moves: the 10 m contour stays 280 m from the shore at any hour of the day. Even at springs the band out to five metres stays 270 m wide: the level does not change the route. A surge pushed by Tramontana can raise the level more than the tide itself. At Bagnara Calabra the tide calendar is no substitute for reading the sea.
shelter: A headland gathers sea from a wide sector, so yesterday's swell counts for as much as today's wind from north. The shore in front of the mark faces north, about 352°, so everything arriving from that sector gets in unobstructed. The strip between the shore and the 5 m contour, about 270 m here, is the first to churn and the last to clear. At Bagnara Calabra the old rule holds: watch the sea for ten minutes, then decide.
conditions: With 200 m reached about 1100 m out, the limit of the day is set by your breath and not by the distance. With 20 m at 300 m from the entry you go from inshore water to outside water without any real transit. By 280 m from the shore you already know whether it is worth going on. Past 280 m from the shore it is the water that decides the day and not the willingness.
hazard: On a headland the risk is not the depth but the swell that comes round the corner without warning. The 500 m from used beaches starts at the water's edge, which is 30 m from here: in summer it is the first calculation to make. At Bagnara Calabra the conditions change faster than the forecast does. With Tramontana strengthening the margin is spent without your noticing.
access: The mark is right against the shore, 30 m from the coastline, and ten metres of water is about 280 m out. At Bagnara Calabra the point is reached on foot, and the long part of the day is the part out of the water. If you do not fancy swimming the 280 m back from ten metres of water, do not go any further out. The best entry is the one you can repeat when you are tired.

✓NO paid licence, but a free MASAF REGISTRATION is mandatory (recreational sea-fishing declaration, online via SIAN/SPID, annual) — it is not a «licence».
✓Free-diving only: scuba/rebreather/hookah BANNED (art. 128-bis DPR 1639/68). The 16+ rule comes from a different act — D.Lgs 4/2012, art. 6 c. 5; handing a speargun to an under-16 is an offence (art. 13-octies c. 3 b, as replaced by L. 75/2026).
✓Night prohibited: spearfishing only from dawn to sunset (art. 129e DPR 1639/68).
✓Distances (art. 129 DPR 1639/68): ≥500 m from beaches with bathers; ≥100 m from fixed gear/set nets and from vessels anchored outside ports.
✓Buoy MANDATORY (art. 130 DPR 1639/68): float with a red flag bearing a white diagonal stripe, visible ≥300 m; the diver stays within 50 m of the buoy/support boat.
✓The speargun may not be kept armed out of the water (art. 131 DPR 1639/68) — load only when submerged.
✓The spearfisher may NOT gather corals, crustaceans or molluscs — the second paragraph of the same article (art. 128-bis DPR 1639/68; the same rule in D.M. 249/1987, art. 2). BUT cephalopods are EXCLUDED: octopus, cuttlefish and squid may be taken — the exception is kept in terms by the official guidance (circolare 6227201 of 23.07.1987). Mussels — up to 3 kg per person per day, but only with the Capo del Compartimento Marittimo's authorisation. The 5 kg daily cap counts EVERYTHING taken that day (D.Lgs 4/2012, art. 13-octies c. 4, as replaced by L. 75/2026).
✓You MAY carry a speargun and a breathing apparatus on the same boat — but at most ONE cylinder of up to 10 L per vessel, and using it to fish is prohibited (art. 128-ter DPR 1639/68). While you are down, at least one person must stay aboard ready to intervene, and there must be a rope long enough to recover the diver.
✓Sale of recreational catch is PROHIBITED (EU control regime, Reg. CE 1224/2009).

Safety protocol

Sets: watch the wave trains ≥15 min before entering; Hmax ≈ 2×Hs, the wash can run 50 m past the foam line. A lull >10 min with period >12 s = a big set «overdue», do NOT enter; enter right after a full set passes and re-check at minute 30.
Exit FIRST: find your exit AND a backup before entering. On a rocky/boulder shore a 0.5 m rise in swell can make the exit impossible — getting pinned/unable to climb out is the main killer.
Headland rip: prominent points often have a permanent topographic rip regardless of the model — locate it, enter/exit on the windward side, never swim against it.
Cold: wetsuit per the SST chip; the first shiver = a metabolic surge and a drop in breath-hold → get out at the first steady shiver. Cap the session at 45–60 min below 15 °C.
Solo discipline: buoy up; tell someone the spot and exit time; conservative breath-hold (never push it in cold/murky/surfy water); visibility <3 m — don't enter.
Afternoon wind: on many coasts the wind builds from midday — plan to be out of the water by midday; the chop builds — get out.
UV 11:00–15:00 (UVI ≥6): sunscreen and cover up on the surface interval.
Solo is a fundamental risk (hypoxic blackout with no buddy). Any doubt = No-go.
