window: In doubt, the order in force at Soverato is asked of the Capitaneria and not of the neighbour in the car park. With Scirocco in the forecast the useful window shortens by itself, long before sunset. In doubt, ask the local Capitaneria beforehand and not afterwards. Under a high coast the light goes before the clock says it should.
tide: The tide is felt more in narrow channels than in front of an open shore. Even at springs the band out to five metres stays 540 m wide: the level does not change the route. The inshore current is read off your float, not off the table. The way back against the current is tested at the start and not at the end.
shelter: The bay works like a funnel: with the swell in the mouth the water inside dirties, and it stays dirty after the wind has dropped. With an exposure of 132° the awkward sector runs from east to south, and outside it the day is usually saved. At Soverato the swell forecast matters more than the wind forecast on this stretch. If the entry is being hit, walk round instead of swimming across.
conditions: Getting twenty metres under you takes about 690 m of swimming, so it pays to get in already decided on where to go. With 200 m reached about 1500 m out, the limit of the day is set by your breath and not by the distance. Do not force the depth to make up for poor clarity. The best water nearly always arrives from offshore on a light Maestrale.
hazard: Under sixteen you do not handle a speargun: the rule is national. With Scirocco into the mouth of the bay the water leaves through the middle and comes back along the sides: keep it in mind for the return. At 0 m from the shore no emergency sorts itself out: come out at the first sign. At Soverato the conditions change faster than the forecast does.
access: At Soverato the entry at the head of the cove is the one that holds up best even in a made-up sea. The mark is right against the shore, 0 m from the coastline, and ten metres of water is about 540 m out. In a hard Scirocco the windward exit becomes unusable: check an alternative. The last stretch back to land, 0 m, is always done with less breath than you expected.

window: At Soverato the bathing season changes the usable distances far more than the sea ever does. On a shore oriented at 139° the usable light ends before the legal hour, which stays the hour of the sun. Carrying your papers costs nothing and settles everything. In the dark the window shuts by law and not by choice.
tide: The tide chapter on this coast is marginal, though not entirely absent. Swell from the southeast moves more water in ten minutes than the tide moves in six hours. In narrow channels the current accelerates even on the smallest range. If the current takes you past the 650 m of the ten-metre line, head straight back for land.
shelter: Around an islet the shelter changes every twenty metres: you work your way round until the water leans on the rock instead of bouncing off it. The exposure measured on the coastline is 139°, that is full southeast: in Scirocco there is no shelter here, in Maestrale the water flattens. At Soverato the difference between a bad day and a good one is a hundred metres of coast, not an hour of waiting. If the swell starts working inside the 240 m of coastal strip, the session is over.
conditions: The steepness of the ground, twenty metres at 400 m, is what makes this entry usable even with little time. The outside water arrives when the wind from the northwest pushes it in; with an old sea it stays offshore for days. At Soverato the good days are few and have to be taken when they come. With the sun high the rock reads; under cloud you have to work closer.
hazard: The marker has to follow you even when you are working 650 m from the shore: 50 m from the vertical below it is the legal maximum. The danger of an isolated rock is the distance from land, not the depth. On breath-hold there is only one rule: never alone beyond your own limits. At Soverato floating lines are seen late: keep an eye above you as well.
access: Under the shore the bottom is what you see from above, 10 m from the coastline. You get in from land and then cross: the exit point is fixed before you set off. If you do not fancy swimming the 650 m back from ten metres of water, do not go any further out. Do not leave your gear where the swell can take it.

window: With ten metres of water 130 m from the shore, the band where you meet the local orders is all of it right here. Between the shore and five metres of water there are 130 m: that is the stretch you want to cover in good light. The rules change from one municipality to the next more than you would think. At Soverato in summer the bathing strip changes the usable distances completely.
tide: It is worth telling a real tide from a wind surge: the second one shows, the first almost never does. High water pushed by Grecale counts for more than a spring tide. The ten-metre line, 130 m offshore, does not move with the level: it moves with the swell. Water pushing you towards the northeast, that is towards the open sea, is the signal to come out.
shelter: In Grecale the detached rocks break the swell but hand it back confused, and that crossed sea tires you more than a clean wave. The coast here runs SE–NW and opens to the northeast: that is what decides which forecast to read. The 130 m that separate the shore from ten metres of water tell you how much sea it takes to ruin the day. With wind from the northeast building, the window shuts fast: plan the way back with margin.
conditions: With 20 m at 340 m from the entry you go from inshore water to outside water without any real transit. In poor clarity at Soverato it pays to work short and close to the bottom instead of heading out. With Grecale strengthening, the good window closes without warning. By 130 m from the shore you already know whether it is worth going on.
hazard: On a shoal the swell breaks without warning: what looks flat over the top can rear up. The 500 m from used beaches starts at the water's edge, which is 30 m from here: in summer it is the first calculation to make. With Grecale building, the window shuts sooner than the forecast says. With 130 m out to five metres, the exit is short only if you decide on it in time.
access: From here to the 5 m contour is about 130 m, and it pays to measure them on the way out so as not to find them long on the way back. For a shoal or a detached rock the access is a swim, and the distance is counted on the way out. With Grecale strengthening the exit is brought forward, not discussed. At Soverato many accesses cross private property: if it is signed, look for another one.

window: It is also prohibited within 500 m of beaches used by bathers: in summer that is the distance you meet most often. At Soverato as anywhere else, the hours of the session are the hours of the sun. Note the hour you will come out before you get in: from 10 m of shore the way back always looks shorter than it is. With the 340 m that separate you from five metres of water, the return in daylight is planned from the start.
tide: Low water uncovers nothing useful on this stretch of coast. The level barely moves: the 10 m contour stays 610 m from the shore at any hour of the day. At Soverato the tide calendar is no substitute for reading the sea. The direction of the current changes with the wind of the last few hours.
shelter: You are in the lee in Maestrale; the moment the wind goes southeast, the water under the shore dirties. A shoal works the opposite way round from the coast: it shelters underwater and not on the surface, and nothing stops what passes over the top. At Soverato whoever gets in first checks, whoever gets in out of habit is trusting yesterday. The strip between the shore and the 5 m contour, about 340 m here, is the first to churn and the last to clear.
conditions: The bottom falls away calmly, with no steps: depth is earned with distance, 630 m to reach twenty. At Soverato the clarity is built on the days without swell, not on the hours without wind. Past 610 m from the shore it is the water that decides the day and not the willingness. On doubtful days get in short and extend only if the water holds.
hazard: Never a loaded speargun out of the water (art. 131): you load below and unload before setting foot back on the rock. In Scirocco the passage between the shoal and the coast becomes the most dangerous part of the route. At Soverato the real risk is not the depth: it is the combination of tiredness and swell. Keep in mind the 10 m that separate you from the coast when you decide on the last descent.
access: In Scirocco the crossing out to the shoal is worth thinking about twice, because on the way back you will have it against you. The distance from the shore, 10 m, is minimal: the limit is set by the sea and not by the route. At Soverato the return is planned on the afternoon swell, not on the morning one. If the sea has changed while you were under, come out at the lowest point and not at the nearest one.

window: The 500 m from used beaches is measured from the water's edge, and here the shore is 40 m from the mark: in bathing season do the arithmetic before getting in. The timing here is set by law rather than by convenience: sunrise to sunset and nothing else. The last stretch, the 270 m out to ten metres of water, is the one you will swim tired: put it in the day's arithmetic. A shore oriented at 68° loses the sun before sunset: take it into account for the last descent.
tide: The current you will find towards the east will nearly always be wind-driven and not tidal. Between the shore and five metres of water there are 180 m, and no tide shifts that line appreciably. If you feel current, work out the way back before going any further. In a hard Levante the water piles up inshore and drains away sideways.
shelter: The shore in front of the mark faces east, about 68°, so everything arriving from that sector gets in unobstructed. Here the protection comes from the ground behind the shore rather than from the coast itself, so in Levante where you stand is what matters. At Soverato the old rule holds: watch the sea for ten minutes, then decide. When the swell gets in, the whole coastal strip, 180 m wide here, lifts and the clarity goes.
conditions: Here depth grows faster than distance: 290 m of swimming is worth twenty metres of water. The 10 m contour runs about 270 m from the shore and is the practical reference for this entry. At Soverato it pays to come out feeling you stopped early. In Levante the suspension stays inshore; in Ponente it is gone in half a day.
hazard: On a straight coast the alongshore current moves you without your noticing. On the shoreline at Soverato the same national rules apply without discounts: breath-hold, daylight, marker in sight. Do not trust a wet handhold: rock with weed under it is ice. With Levante strengthening the margin is spent without your noticing.
access: With the shore 40 m away and five metres of water at 180 m, the band to cross is a short one. From the shore you get in where the rock slopes down, not where the road comes closest. At Soverato the accesses change with the bathing season. From the entry point to the shore there are 40 m, and they are the metres that weigh most on the return.

✓Free-diving only: scuba/rebreather/hookah BANNED (art. 128-bis DPR 1639/68). The 16+ rule comes from a different act — D.Lgs 4/2012, art. 6 c. 5; handing a speargun to an under-16 is an offence (art. 13-octies c. 3 b, as replaced by L. 75/2026).
✓Night prohibited: spearfishing only from dawn to sunset (art. 129e DPR 1639/68).
✓Distances (art. 129 DPR 1639/68): ≥500 m from beaches with bathers; ≥100 m from fixed gear/set nets and from vessels anchored outside ports.

Safety protocol

Sets: watch the wave trains ≥15 min before entering; Hmax ≈ 2×Hs, the wash can run 50 m past the foam line. A lull >10 min with period >12 s = a big set «overdue», do NOT enter; enter right after a full set passes and re-check at minute 30.
Exit FIRST: find your exit AND a backup before entering. On a rocky/boulder shore a 0.5 m rise in swell can make the exit impossible — getting pinned/unable to climb out is the main killer.
Headland rip: prominent points often have a permanent topographic rip regardless of the model — locate it, enter/exit on the windward side, never swim against it.
Cold: wetsuit per the SST chip; the first shiver = a metabolic surge and a drop in breath-hold → get out at the first steady shiver. Cap the session at 45–60 min below 15 °C.
Solo discipline: buoy up; tell someone the spot and exit time; conservative breath-hold (never push it in cold/murky/surfy water); visibility <3 m — don't enter.
Afternoon wind: on many coasts the wind builds from midday — plan to be out of the water by midday; the chop builds — get out.
UV 11:00–15:00 (UVI ≥6): sunscreen and cover up on the surface interval.
Solo is a fundamental risk (hypoxic blackout with no buddy). Any doubt = No-go.

Spearfishing in Soverato: spots, seasons and rules

Soverato is a conditions puzzle. The north reef by Fossa Mortara lists amberjack, dolphinfish and sea bream, but it is open to Sirocco and can turn cloudy fast. The town front has rock and posidonia for seabass and bream; Pietragrande, Copanello and Caminia extend the plan north. Summer swimmers matter: Italy's 500 m rule from beaches with bathers can remove an easy shore entry. The MASAF SIAN/SPID declaration is required, but it is not a licence.

TL;DR

Soverato is an Ionian Calabria plan, with east and south-east exposure shaping the day.

The named marks are Fossa Mortara north reef, the town front, Pietragrande, Copanello and Caminia, with no published safety rating per spot.
