Google MapsSOLO is the biggest risk: underwater you can black out from lack of oxygen silently and fatally, with no one around. Solo is never truly «safe». Below are the best weather windows; carry a buoy, tell someone your plan and exit time, and any doubt — don't go.
Cameras, map and reference — to hand as you come up.
Check the cam BEFORE you leave. Foam, brown/green murk, or waves washing the entry rocks = No-go. At night/in fog the cam is useless — treat it as «unknown», NOT «green».
Spearfishing in Porto-Vecchio is best framed by the reserve line first. The Cerbicales, Île de la Vacca and Toro are closed offshore; do not push beyond the Pointe de la Chiappa-Vacca-Toro line. The practical options stay coast-side: Santa Giulia, Palombaggia and San Ciprianu, with clear granite, sand patches and 2 to 15 m shore ground. Listed fish include bass, bream, gilthead and dentex. The port zone is closed, and grouper plus corb are protected in the French Mediterranean.
These are inshore choices. The offshore islands are excluded because the local reserve line is the controlling fact.

The Mediterranean tide is minor; east wind matters. It builds the Porto-Vecchio front and pushes you toward the bay side or toward postponing the dive. Settled weather can give clear water, often 15 to 25 m or more when settled, but no live visibility. Use the port and marina webcams only as a surface check, then confirm chop, traffic, swimmers and distance from the closed offshore line.
Rules change. Exact distances from beaches/ports and seasonal closures are set by the local préfecture maritime — check its arrêté and the DIRM/OFB zone map before heading out.
