Rules change. Exact distances from beaches/ports and seasonal closures are set by the local préfecture maritime — check its arrêté and the DIRM/OFB zone map before heading out.
Saint-Jean-de-Luz has rock entry points such as Digue de Socoa, Pointe Sainte-Barbe (face externe) and Plage de Mayarco (Acotz). The best-organised Basque spot: the Digue de Socoa drops into the Basque rock strata from 3 to 20 m, rich in bream, bass, gilthead and mullet. Below you'll find each spot (access, shelter and hazards) and today's forecast.
Summer (June–October), but the coast is open to heavy Atlantic swell — the windows are short. French Basque Country: plan for the calm days and mind the rivermouths after rain (runoff clouds the Landes/Gironde).
Atlantic: ~12 °C in winter, ~22 °C in summer (warmer than the north). 5 mm in summer, 7 mm in the shoulder seasons. Heavy swell and the Landes/Gironde sandbars (baïnes) cloud the water — aim for the Basque rocky spots on calm days.
Hard: heavy Atlantic swell, short windows. For the experienced; the baïnes and beach currents are dangerous — stick to the rocky spots and read the swell forecast.
No paid licence in Saint-Jean-de-Luz — but third-party (RC) insurance is MANDATORY, and since 10/01/2026 a free EU registration + catch declaration (RECFishing app) applies from age 16. Breath-hold only (no scuba), buoy mandatory, no night; sizes by coast (bar 42 Atl. / 30 Med.), grouper and corb banned in the Med. See the guide.
