Rules change. Exact distances from beaches/ports and seasonal closures are set by the local préfecture maritime — check its arrêté and the DIRM/OFB zone map before heading out.
Les Sables-d'Olonne has rock entry points such as Puits d'Enfer / La Chaume and Anse de Cayola. The Vendée is famous for big fish — including 50 kg-plus meagre on the offshore plateaux — but from shore the action concentrates on the rock between Puits d'Enfer and La Chaume. Below you'll find each spot (access, shelter and hazards) and today's forecast.
Summer (June–October) — the steadiest. Pays de la Loire: islands (Yeu, Noirmoutier) and meso-tides; after rain the water clouds with river runoff — give it a day or two to clear.
Atlantic: ~10 °C in winter, ~19–20 °C in summer. 5–7 mm. The Loire runoff clouds the water after rain — best visibility is at the offshore spots of Yeu/Noirmoutier.
Moderate: islands and meso-tides, water clouds after rain. Suits confident beginners on calm summer days; aim for the offshore spots for visibility.
No paid licence in Les Sables-d'Olonne — but third-party (RC) insurance is MANDATORY, and since 10/01/2026 a free EU registration + catch declaration (RECFishing app) applies from age 16. Breath-hold only (no scuba), buoy mandatory, no night; sizes by coast (bar 42 Atl. / 30 Med.), grouper and corb banned in the Med. See the guide.
