Google MapsSOLO is the biggest risk: underwater you can black out from lack of oxygen silently and fatally, with no one around. Solo is never truly «safe». Below are the best weather windows; carry a buoy, tell someone your plan and exit time, and any doubt — don't go.
Cameras, map and reference — to hand as you come up.
Check the cam BEFORE you leave. Foam, brown/green murk, or waves washing the entry rocks = No-go. At night/in fog the cam is useless — treat it as «unknown», NOT «green».
Rules change. Exact distances from beaches/ports and seasonal closures are set by the local préfecture maritime — check its arrêté and the DIRM/OFB zone map before heading out.
Roscoff is a Channel spearfishing plan with one non-negotiable local rule: stay out of the navigable Île de Batz channel. Spearfishing is banned there because of strong currents and Brittany Ferries. The usable marks are outside that channel: Pointe de Bloscon, the Bay of Morlaix islets by boat, Pointe de Perharidy and Le Théven/Le Billou on the Santec side. The fish list is Atlantic/Channel, with bass, pollack, mullet, lobster, spider crab, conger and mackerel. France still requires RC insurance, breath-hold only practice, and the 2026 registration plus catch declaration regime.
Roscoff has good-looking kelp and rock, but the channel boundary is the first filter. The spots below carry no invented safety ratings. Local webcams show surface water at the port, panorama and Bloscon; there is no buoy station for France.

Roscoff is Channel macrotidal. Webcams are available, but there is no live underwater visibility figure and no buoy station. Pointe de Perharidy has variable visibility. The practical filter is slack water and a position outside the Batz channel; do not turn a port camera into a promise for the Bay of Morlaix islets.
The answer is outside the channel only. Spearfishing is banned in the navigable channel of Île de Batz because of strong currents and Brittany Ferries. The Bay of Morlaix islets are boat ground outside the channel, and Pointe de Bloscon is also outside the Batz channel.
Roscoff has no month-by-month season. It has a macrotidal Channel regime and tide-dependent marks. Le Théven/Le Billou is specifically linked to the end of the ebb, and slack water is the safest timing cue. For species, keep to the Atlantic/Channel list: sea bass 42 cm, pollack 42 cm with max two per day, mullet 30 cm and mackerel 20 cm.
Yes. The France legal block says RC insurance is mandatory for spearfishing, either through a standalone policy or an FFESSM/FFPSA federation licence. It also says breath-hold only, no scuba or hookah, no night spearfishing, no loaded speargun out of the water, and from 10 Jan 2026 registration plus catch declaration.
Use Pointe de Bloscon, Bay of Morlaix islets outside the channel, Pointe de Perharidy and Le Théven/Le Billou. The Batz channel is excluded.
