Cameras, map and reference — to hand as you come up.
Check the cam BEFORE you leave. Foam, brown/green murk, or waves washing the entry rocks = No-go. At night/in fog the cam is useless — treat it as «unknown», NOT «green».
Rules change. Exact distances from beaches/ports and seasonal closures are set by the local préfecture maritime — check its arrêté and the DIRM/OFB zone map before heading out.
Spearfishing in Lorient is a roadstead plan, not a clean open-coast promise. The same local constraint dominates: military and commercial traffic, navigation channels, and water loaded by the Blavet and Scorff. Larmor-Plage/Pen Mané is the bass and mullet edge when a dry spell clears the water. Kerroc'h has an off-limits cove. Fort-Bloqué and Les Loriots bring rocky ground and spider crab in spring-summer, while Gâvres is the calmer fallback. Nationally, you need civil-liability insurance, breath-hold only practice, and the 2026 registration plus catch declaration regime.
Named grounds are available but no safety score. Treat Lorient as a working harbour edge: choose water outside the channels, read the wind-driven turbidity, and do not use the webcams as underwater visibility data. France has no buoy station.

Lorient is Atlantic mesotidal and sheltered, but loaded water from the Blavet and Scorff still matters. Roadstead, Kernevel and La Base webcams help with surface state only. There is no live visibility figure and no buoy station. A dry window matters more than a generic season claim here.
Bass and mullet hold at Larmor-Plage/Pen Mané. Pollack comes from the Atlantic/Channel species list rather than the Lorient marks. Use the Atlantic sizes: sea bass 42 cm, pollack 42 cm with a maximum of two per day, white seabream 25 cm and mullet 30 cm.
The practical local rule is to stay clear of navigation channels and French Navy traffic. National France rules then apply: breath-hold only, no scuba or hookah, no night spearfishing, no loaded speargun out of water, stay at least 150 m from vessels actively fishing, and do not spearfish in ports, bathing zones or marine reserves. Civil-liability insurance is mandatory, and from 10 Jan 2026 registration plus catch declaration applies.
Yes. RC insurance for spearfishing is mandatory, either as a standalone policy or through an FFESSM/FFPSA federation licence. A federation licence is not the same thing as a separate legal fishing permit. France removed the old licence/declaration model in 2009, then introduced the 2026 registration plus catch declaration regime.
Use Larmor-Plage/Pen Mané, Pointe de Kerroc'h, Fort-Bloqué/Les Loriots and Gâvres. In all cases, stay outside channels and roadstead traffic.
Local species include bass, mullet, white fish and spider crab. Atlantic/Channel species also include pollack, white seabream, black seabream, conger and mackerel.
