- The catch limit is 5 kg per person per day and the catch may not be sold. Time spent finding out is time taken away from trouble. With Ostro forecast to strengthen it pays to go earlier rather than to stay longer.

- At Avola nobody plans an outing around the tide, and they are right not to. Under half a metre of range means the only real variable left is the swell. With the water down on a wind surge the entry rocks get more slippery, not more comfortable. In a channel it is the current that decides the route: plan it before getting in.

- The good sector is the one opposite the opening: from the north the water stays still even in a steady blow. A mole shelters what lies behind it and worsens what lies in front: on the exposed side the swell rebounds off the blocks. At Avola whoever gets in first checks, whoever gets in out of habit is trusting yesterday. If you get in as Ostro is easing, remember the sea stays up a day longer than the wind.

- The ground is long: the 20 m contour sits about 1400 m from the shore and the 10 m contour 810 m. The good day here is not made by the depth but by the water: if you can see, you can work in five metres. At Avola it pays to come out feeling you stopped early.
