- At Avola nobody plans an outing around the tide, and they are right not to. Under half a metre of range means the only real variable left is the swell. With the water down on a wind surge the entry rocks get more slippery, not more comfortable. In a channel it is the current that decides the route: plan it before getting in.

- The good sector is the one opposite the opening: from the north the water stays still even in a steady blow. A mole shelters what lies behind it and worsens what lies in front: on the exposed side the swell rebounds off the blocks. At Avola whoever gets in first checks, whoever gets in out of habit is trusting yesterday. If you get in as Ostro is easing, remember the sea stays up a day longer than the wind.

- The ground is long: the 20 m contour sits about 1400 m from the shore and the 10 m contour 810 m. The good day here is not made by the depth but by the water: if you can see, you can work in five metres. At Avola it pays to come out feeling you stopped early.

- You get in off the blocks carefully: they are unstable and covered in weed. In a hard Ostro the windward exit becomes unusable: check an alternative.
The little jetty south of the seafront: blocks, sand and a few slabs, usually 2–6 m. A good entry when the grecale makes the northern reef unworkable — the coast sets back here and the swell arrives already broken. The depths and the bottom type above are descriptions, not measurements.

- The tide chapter on this coast is marginal, though not entirely absent. Running water brings murk with it: look at where it is coming from. At Avola the sea tells you the time better than any table.

The shore in front of the mark faces southwest, about 228°, so everything arriving from that sector gets in unobstructed. Shelter is verified in the water and not on the chart: the first fifty metres already tell you how the rest will be. Alone it counts double: no shelter is worth an uncertain way back.

- The ground is long: the 20 m contour sits about 1300 m from the shore and the 10 m contour 920 m. Look at the colour before you go down: full green is workable, milky brown is not. Come back with margin: tiredness takes your judgement before it takes your strength.

- A hundred metres from fixed installations and from vessels at anchor is an obligation, not a courtesy. In a cove the risk is the false calm: from inside you cannot see that the sea outside has built. At Avola the real risk is not the depth: it is the combination of tiredness and swell.

- Access in a cove is easy; coming back along the coast rather less so. At Avola the accesses change with the bathing season.

- The entry off the beach is the most comfortable and the murkiest: it pays to cross the dirty band straight away. The route on land is not mapped: the survey only says where the rock ends and the water begins. With Levante strengthening the exit is brought forward, not discussed.
Below the Eloro archaeological hill at the mouth of the Tellaro: sand, slabs and the tower as a landmark, usually 2–8 m. The northern boundary of the Vendicari reserve runs just to the south: enter north of the boundary, never across the reserve. - The regime is microtidal: the level at Avola moves less than half a metre even at springs. In a hard Scirocco the level rises more than any spring tide manages. Water pushing you towards the southeast, that is towards the open sea, is the signal to come out.

In a bay like this the shelter is a few tens of metres wide, tucked against the windward point rather than in the middle of the arc, and in a hard Scirocco not even that. - At Avola, as along the whole Italian coast, the surface marker and the 50 m radius are not negotiable. The mouth of the bay is where the swell concentrates and where getting back becomes difficult. Go down less deep than you could: the margin is the only real safety. Do not trust a wet handhold: rock with weed under it is ice.

- No entry point in this cove has been verified: we do not know a public descent to the water, and we do not know where you would come out. The shore around it alternates private land and steep rock, so check it on the ground and do not force a way down that is not there.

- On the cape an entry that is comfortable in a flat sea may not exist at all in half a metre of swell. At Avola the best place is the one you can leave without hurrying. In a building sea the rock you got in from may not be there on the way back.

- It is worth telling a real tide from a wind surge: the second one shows, the first almost never does. Swell from the southwest moves more water in ten minutes than the tide moves in six hours. The ten-metre line, 100 m offshore, does not move with the level: it moves with the swell.

On the point at Avola it is the flank that gives you the shelter, not the general lie of the coast. With the wind from the northeast at your back you can work; with the swell from the southwest in your face you look and go home. A metre of long swell from the southwest is worth more than two metres of short chop raised inshore.
