Sagres' classic shore-spear entry: sand in the middle to get in, rock on the flanks for fish (sea bream, bass, octopus). Don't hunt inside the lifeguarded swimming zone.

From the left (west) end of Praia da Mareta, below the Telheiro do Infante restaurant: drop to the sand and swim/scramble out to the reef. Shares Mareta's parking.

This is the reef 'in front of Telheiro' that dive guides and forums call the bay's best fish structure — rocks, caves, variety. Quiet, but more technical than the beach itself.

Serious danger: powerful closeout surf, strong rips and submerged rocks (especially on the right). Guides explicitly warn non-experts off swimming. For solo spearing this is a scout-from-land spot, not an entry, until you've seen it genuinely flat.

Steps from the car park by Sagres fortress down to the sand. Water straight off the beach, but the exit is governed by incoming surf.

Sagres' most famous surf break — by default not a hunting spot. Look first from the fortress clifftop; only enter if it's truly calm. Otherwise skip it and fish Mareta.

Water hazards are low — it's a family paddling beach. Real risks: boats and dive RIBs running to the islets and Baleeira harbour (fly a flagged buoy), and weever fish in the sand. Afternoon wind pushes you offshore.

Access and parking by the Martinhal resort east of town; gentle sandy walk-in from the beach. The Baleeira harbour mole is right next door — spearfishing is banned there (harbour entrance).

IMPORTANT: the Ilhotes do Martinhal are a marine reserve (Partial Protection I, no-take since 2011) — spearfishing is BANNED there; the beach itself is a bathing beach (200 m rule). Great for scouting/snorkel, but as a hunting spot it's essentially off-limits.

  • ✓Spearfishing licence required (16+), daily/monthly/annual (~€25/yr). Speargun = licence required.
  • ✓Hand-gathering shellfish with NO gear — no licence; but if a speargun is on the dive, a spearfishing licence is required.
  • ✓Night prohibited: spearfishing only in daylight (sunset→sunrise not allowed). Artificial light as a means of finding/attracting fish is banned — a torch for safety only.
  • ✓Signalling buoy MANDATORY for spearfishing: buoy/float with an «Alfa» flag (red/orange/yellow, ≥8 L), no more than 30 m from the diver.
  • ✓Spearfishing daily limit: fish + cephalopods — 15 kg (excluding the largest specimen). General rod-and-line recreational fishing — 10 kg.
  • ✓Invertebrates (including spider crab) — 2 kg/day total.
  • ✓Spider crab: min. carapace 12 cm; (closed season) 15.02–15.06 — applies to recreational gathering too.
  • ✓Min. sizes: robalo 36 cm, sargo 17 cm, dourada 19 cm, choupa 23 cm, corvina 42 cm; octopus 750 g.
  • ✓Grouper — fully protected, may not be taken.
  • ⛔ Grouper (Epinephelus) — fully protected, capture PROHIBITED.
  • ⛔ Seahorses (Hippocampus) — protected.

Protocole de sécurité
  • Sets: watch the wave trains ≥15 min before entering; Hmax ≈ 2×Hs, the wash can run 50 m past the foam line. A lull >10 min with period >12 s = a big set «overdue», do NOT enter; enter right after a full set passes and re-check at minute 30.
  • Exit FIRST: find your exit AND a backup before entering. At Cabo Raso/Arriba a 0.5 m rise in swell makes a boulder exit impossible — getting pinned/unable to climb out is the main killer here.
  • Headland rip: at Cabo Raso there is a permanent topographic rip regardless of the model — locate it, enter/exit on the windward side, never swim against it.
  • Cold: wetsuit per the SST chip; the first shiver = a metabolic surge and a drop in breath-hold → get out at the first steady shiver. Cap the session at 45–60 min below 15 °C.
  • Solo discipline: buoy up; tell someone the spot and exit time; conservative breath-hold (never push it in cold/murky/surfy water); visibility <3 m — don't enter.
  • Nortada (Jun–Sep): wind builds from midday — be out of the water by ~11:00; the chop builds — get out.
  • UV 11:00–15:00 (UVI ≥6): sunscreen and cover up on the surface interval.
  • Solo is a fundamental risk (hypoxic blackout with no buddy). Any doubt = No-go.

Where can I spearfish in Sagres?

Sagres has rock entry points such as Praia da Mareta, Telheiro / west headland of Mareta and Praia do Martinhal. Europe's southwest tip, with both west and south coasts — there's always a leeward side. Below you'll find each spot (access, shelter and hazards) and today's forecast.

When is the best season in Sagres?

The country's longest season: good May to October and workable in the shoulder months. The south coast is sheltered from the dominant swell and has the best visibility.

How cold is the water in Sagres?

The mainland's warmest: ~16–23 °C in summer. A 3 mm suit in high summer, 5 mm in the shoulder months.

Is Sagres good for a beginner?

The most accessible in the country: warm, clear, sheltered water with more good days — a good place to build water time on calm days. Even so, check the forecast and local hazards.
